Use a browser-automation script to open the page and save its screenshot; use Windows Task Scheduler to run that script on a recurring or one-time trigger. The script controls what gets captured, while the task controls when, under which account, and in what execution context it runs.
What you need before scheduling a capture
- A Windows 10 or Windows 11 machine that can run at the scheduled time. Microsoft lists both among the platforms for schtasks.
- A browser automation runtime and a script that works when launched manually.
- An output folder writable by the account that will run the task.
- A decision about whether the browser should run headlessly or appear in a user session.
The example below uses Playwright with Node.js. It illustrates the capture pattern, but it is not a tested end-to-end deployment recipe. Check the syntax and behavior against your installed Windows, Node.js, and Playwright versions, then test it in the same account and context as the scheduled task.

Build and test the screenshot script first
Install Playwright and its browser
From a working directory for your project, install Playwright and the browser binaries required by the installed Playwright version. Playwright’s browser documentation explains that versions require specific browser binaries and that they can be installed with its CLI: Playwright browsers. Repeat the browser installation when needed after upgrading Playwright. On Windows, the documented default browser cache is under %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalms-playwright; the account running a task may have a different profile and browser cache.

Save a capture script
For example, save this as C:WebsiteShotscapture.js. It takes a full-page screenshot and writes it to a fixed location, creating the output directory if needed:

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
const fs = require('node:fs/promises');
(async () => {
const outputDir = 'C:\WebsiteShots\output';
await fs.mkdir(outputDir, { recursive: true });
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.screenshot({ path: `${outputDir}\example.png`, fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Playwright’s Page API documents navigation and screenshot output, including full-page capture: Page API. Replace the example URL and filename with the site and output you need. Before scheduling, run the script manually from the intended project directory using the same Node.js executable you plan to configure for the task. Confirm that the screenshot exists, contains the expected content, and can be overwritten or uniquely named as intended.
The fixed filename above means each successful run replaces the previous image. If you need a history, change the script to generate a unique filename per run; decide on a retention policy so the output folder does not grow indefinitely.
Choose how Windows should start the script
Task Scheduler graphical interface
- Open Task Scheduler and choose the option to create a task or a basic task.
- Set a name and select the trigger that matches the desired cadence, such as daily or weekly. For advanced conditions and task settings, use the full task configuration rather than assuming the basic wizard exposes every option.
- Choose an action to start a program. Set the program to the full path of
node.exe, not merelynode, and provide the full script path as an argument, for exampleC:WebsiteShotscapture.js. - Set the start-in or working directory to the project folder, such as
C:WebsiteShots, if the task interface provides that field. Scripts that use relative paths can fail when launched from an unexpected working directory; absolute paths avoid that dependency. - Choose the account and run mode deliberately, save the task, then use the task’s Run command to check it.
Microsoft says the command-line and graphical tools perform the same scheduling operations and can be used interchangeably: schtasks commands.

Using schtasks.exe
schtasks /create supports a schedule type (/sc), optional modifier (/mo), task name (/tn), command (/tr), and optional start time (/st), among other options. For example, an hourly trigger can be expressed like this:
schtasks /create /tn "Website screenshot" /sc hourly /tr ""C:Program Filesnodejsnode.exe" C:WebsiteShotscapture.js" /st 09:00
This is an illustrative command, not a universal account or security configuration. Verify the accepted syntax for your Windows version and configure the task’s run-as identity and other settings appropriately; do not put an account password directly into a published command. The /st value is a start time, not a guarantee that a powered-off machine will capture at that time. Microsoft documents schedule types including minute, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, once, startup, logon, idle, and event schedules, along with create examples: schtasks create.
Pick the simplest trigger that fits
- Use a recurring schedule such as daily or weekly for routine snapshots.
- Use a minute or hourly schedule only when that capture frequency is actually useful; consider the number of files and load from repeated navigation.
- Use a one-time trigger for a single future capture.
- Use startup or logon triggers if the capture should follow a machine start or a user sign-in rather than a fixed clock time.
A task cannot capture while the machine is unavailable to run it. Missed-run behavior depends on task settings; the cited scheduling documentation does not establish one universal behavior for every configuration.

Set the account, paths, and browser mode for unattended runs
Run under the right identity
Use an account with access to the script, Node.js, the browser binaries, and the output folder. Test permissions under that identity rather than relying on a successful run from your own interactive desktop. Microsoft notes that task permissions are associated with the current or specified user by default. It also states: “The System account doesn’t have interactive logon rights. Users can’t see or interact with programs or tasks run with system permissions.” See Microsoft’s schtasks create documentation.

The example launches Chromium headlessly, so no browser window is expected. This suits unattended captures. If you need a visible browser or a site flow that depends on an interactive user session, configure and test the task in an appropriate logged-on user context; a System-account task will not show a browser to the user. Playwright documents headless operation and browser-channel options in its browser documentation.
Keep paths and dependencies explicit
- Use absolute paths for the script and screenshot output.
- Point the task at the exact Node.js executable you tested.
- Install the Playwright browser binaries for the account and environment that will execute the task.
- Grant that identity permission to create and update files in the output directory.
- Do not assume environment variables, mapped drives, network access, or a browser profile from an interactive session will be available in a background task.
Verify the task and diagnose common failures
Check that it ran and produced a file
Use Task Scheduler’s task state and next-run information to inspect the schedule. From a command prompt, schtasks /query displays task information, and schtasks /run /tn "Website screenshot" starts the task on demand for an operational check. These commands are documented in Microsoft’s schtasks reference. Check the output directory as well: a task can start successfully while the script itself fails.

Common symptoms and fixes
- No image appears: Run the script manually from the task’s configured account and inspect the task’s command, arguments, working directory, and output-folder permissions.
- “Node” or the script cannot be found: Replace a bare executable name with the full path to
node.exe, and use an absolute script path. - Playwright reports a missing browser: Install the browser binaries required by the installed Playwright version for the account that runs the task, then rerun the manual test.
- The browser window is not visible: Confirm the task is not running as System and that the selected run mode and user-session settings match the need for an interactive window.
- The task works manually but not on schedule: Compare the interactive and scheduled identities, browser cache locations, permissions, and working directories; test with Task Scheduler’s Run action.
- The screenshot differs from a desktop capture: Keep the browser version, operating system, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode consistent where possible. Playwright notes these can affect rendered pixels in its visual comparisons guidance.
- The capture is incomplete: Confirm the navigation has reached the state you need before taking the screenshot. A page’s load event does not establish that every dynamic element or delayed asset is ready; adapt the script to the site and verify the resulting image.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For a scheduled Windows capture, the script can call the API instead of installing and managing browser automation locally:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before the shot, along with 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I schedule just one future screenshot instead of a recurring capture?
Yes. Use a one-time trigger in Task Scheduler or the /sc once schedule type supported by schtasks.
Will a scheduled capture run if my PC is off at the trigger time?
No capture can occur while the machine is unavailable. Whether a missed task runs later depends on its configured task settings.
