If Windows shows “You’ll need a new app to open this windowsdefender link,” it cannot route the link to the Windows Security app. The message alone does not mean Microsoft Defender Antivirus is switched off. Start with a restart and Windows updates, then try the available app-repair controls before using advanced commands or Windows recovery options.
What the “windowsdefender” link error means
Windows uses the windowsdefender: protocol to open sections of Windows Security. The error means Windows cannot find a working app registration for that link. Microsoft describes Windows Security as a built-in app that brings together features such as Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Windows Firewall; which features are active can depend on the device and any other security software installed. Check the security-provider status through the controls available on your PC, or ask your organization’s IT administrator if it is managed. Reports of this exact error exist in a Microsoft Q&A community discussion, but they do not identify one confirmed cause or a universal fix. A damaged app registration or package, Windows component corruption, or a configuration change may be involved.

1. Restart and check Windows Update
- Restart the PC, then try opening Windows Security again.
- Open Windows Update in Settings and install any pending updates.
- Restart again if Windows asks you to, then test the link.
2. Repair or reset Windows Security
On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Windows Security if it appears in the list, and open Advanced options. Choose Repair if available. If Repair is unavailable or the error remains, choose Reset if that option appears. Microsoft notes that these controls are not available for every app; their absence is not a reason to run an unrelated repair script. See Microsoft’s app repair and reset guidance. Menu availability and labels can vary by Windows version and build.

Use PowerShell package repair only if the basic steps fail
Replies in the community Q&A thread suggest registering the Windows Security app package (SecHealthUI), including this elevated PowerShell command:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.SecHealthUI -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackageThis is a community-reported suggestion, not a Microsoft-documented, guaranteed fix for this error. The command or its behavior may differ across Windows builds. Only run commands you understand; do not substitute broad scripts that re-register every app. If PowerShell reports an error, stop and seek support for your specific Windows version rather than improvising additional package commands.

Repair Windows system files if app repair does not help
Microsoft’s general Windows repair sequence runs DISM before System File Checker (SFC). It may help repair Windows components, but Microsoft does not say it specifically resolves the windowsdefender: link error.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. - Run
sfc /scannowand let verification reach 100%. - Restart Windows and test the link again.
Follow Microsoft’s DISM and SFC instructions if you need more detail about the process or its results.

Consider Windows recovery only after repair steps
If the problem persists, choose a recovery route based on what your Windows version offers and how much change you can accept. Back up important files before any major recovery operation, and review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options for device-specific instructions.

Microsoft documents Fix problems using Windows Update as a Windows 11 recovery option; availability can depend on the device. Installation media is a later fallback, not a requirement for the usual app, package, DISM, or SFC steps. A USB flash drive is relevant only if you proceed to the installation-media route.

If the PC is managed or runs Windows 10
On a work- or school-managed PC, policies may control security apps, PowerShell access, or recovery settings. Ask your IT administrator before changing packages or security configuration.

Avoid risky shortcuts
- Do not delete Defender registry keys or disable security protection as a way to fix an app link.
- Do not download an unofficial “Defender repair” utility.
- Do not run blanket PowerShell app-registration scripts as an initial fix.
