To copy and paste in Windows 11, select the text or item, press Ctrl+C, click where it should go, then press Ctrl+V. To retrieve something copied earlier, press Windows key+V and turn on clipboard history if prompted.
Copy and paste text or an item
- Select the text in a document or field, or select the item in the app.
- Press Ctrl+C to copy it.
- Open or click the destination. For text, place the insertion point where the text should appear.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste.
These are common Windows app shortcuts, but Microsoft notes that they may not work in every app. If a shortcut behaves differently, check the app’s own instructions. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcut list identifies Ctrl+C as Copy and Ctrl+V as Paste.

Open clipboard history to paste an earlier item
Windows ordinarily makes copied content available to paste. To see earlier clips, press Windows key+V. If Windows asks to enable clipboard history, select Turn on. You can also enable it through Settings > System > Clipboard. Clipboard history is off by default, according to Microsoft’s clipboard guidance.
Microsoft documents a maximum of 25 history entries and a 4 MB limit per item. When the history is full, older unpinned items can be removed to make room.

Sync clipboard text across devices (optional)
Clipboard sync is not needed for copy and paste on one PC. To enable it, open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and turn on Clipboard history across your devices. Microsoft says the feature uses a Microsoft account or work account, so sign in with the same account on each device. Text can sync automatically; alternatively, open clipboard history and use the sync control on an item to send it manually.
