Start with the game’s Xbox handheld compatibility label, then match the fix to the symptom. Handheld optimised titles should run without setting changes; Mostly compatible games may need minor adjustments; Unsupported games are not supported; and Not tested means Xbox has no test result. After that, update Windows, the Xbox and Microsoft Store apps, and your handheld drivers. Enable Xbox mode and reduce startup programs before attempting Gaming Services repair. Reserve the administrator PowerShell repair for the specific launch errors Microsoft identifies: 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F.
Use the symptom to choose the safest first fix
Do not change several settings at once. Identify whether the problem is inconsistent frame delivery, a crash after launch, or an immediate failure to start. Also note whether it affects one game or every Xbox title. That distinction tells you whether to investigate the game’s compatibility and requirements or Windows’ gaming components.

A compatibility label is guidance, not a promise of a particular frame rate. A title can be marked Handheld optimised and still encounter a game update bug, a driver regression or a conflict with an overlay.
Check Xbox’s handheld compatibility label before changing settings
Open the game’s listing in the Xbox app and look for its handheld compatibility designation. Xbox uses four categories:

Xbox also notes that some games need in-game setting changes for optimal performance. Start with the label, then apply only the changes appropriate to that category. If a single game is affected, compare its requirements with the handheld’s available storage, memory and graphics settings before making system-wide changes.
Bring Windows, Xbox and the handheld software up to date
Updates are the least invasive way to address a crash that appeared after installing a game or a Windows update. Install them in this order, restarting when Windows requests it:
- Windows: open Start > Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install all offered updates and restart.
- Xbox app: open the Microsoft Store, select Library, choose Get updates, and allow the Xbox app to update.
- Microsoft Store components: from the same Library page, install pending updates for the Microsoft Store and Gaming Services if they are offered.
- Manufacturer drivers and tools: use the handheld maker’s official support page for the exact model. Install chipset, graphics, firmware and control-interface updates intended for that model, then restart again.
Do not assume that a driver update is a universal cure. Official guidance establishes updating as a sensible troubleshooting step, but it does not establish that one particular driver version fixes every crash or stutter. If the problem began immediately after an update, record the version and date so support can investigate a regression instead of receiving a vague “the game crashes” report.

Enable Xbox mode and reduce Windows background activity
Xbox mode is a Windows 11 feature that requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. Microsoft documents it as a way to provide a more focused handheld experience and reduce background work while you play.
Turn on Xbox mode at startup
- Open Start > Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode.
- Enable Enter Xbox mode on startup if the option is available on your handheld.
- Restart the handheld and launch the game from the Xbox experience.
- Play the same section of the game that previously stuttered or crashed. Changing only this setting makes the result easier to interpret.
Microsoft says Xbox mode limits background processes on a handheld to improve gaming performance while also helping battery life. It is not a guarantee of a fixed frame rate: a demanding game, a title-specific bug or a driver problem can still cause trouble.
Trim startup applications
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Turn off applications you do not need while gaming, especially duplicate game launchers, hardware monitors, chat clients and overlay tools.
- Leave essential security and device-control software enabled unless the manufacturer specifically says otherwise.
- Restart and test again. If you need a disabled app, start it after leaving Xbox mode or return it to the previous setting.
Full-screen handheld experiences suppress some Windows startup apps and services, which frees memory. Microsoft’s developer guidance also warns that launchers consume limited handheld resources. Two launchers or multiple overlays can therefore be useful suspects when a game hitches, even when the game itself is installed correctly.

Fix stutter without creating new variables
Stutter can mean low average frame rate, sudden frame-time spikes, shader compilation or a background process interrupting the game. Treat it as a repeatable test rather than changing every graphics option at once.

Use a controlled in-game test
- Choose a repeatable scene, such as the same level, race or area, and play it for several minutes.
- Start with the game’s default preset. Record whether the hitch occurs and whether it happens at a particular action or location.
- If the title is Mostly compatible, lower the most demanding options first: resolution, shadows, reflections, volumetric effects and ray-traced effects. Keep a note of each change.
- Apply the game’s frame-rate or refresh-rate option only if the title provides one. Do not describe a setting as a universal fix; its effect depends on the game and the handheld’s display.
- Close unnecessary launchers and overlays, then repeat the same scene with Xbox mode enabled.
If reducing settings does not change the hitch, the cause may be outside the graphics workload. Recheck updates, startup activity and the title’s compatibility label. If every game stutters, focus on Windows, drivers, power or background processes; if one game stutters, focus on that title’s updates and requirements.
Check power and thermal conditions
Test while the handheld is connected to its normal charger and while it is running on battery, noting the difference. A change between the two conditions is useful evidence for the manufacturer, but it does not by itself prove a defective battery or a specific thermal limit. Keep vents clear, use the manufacturer’s performance profile as documented for the model and avoid running a second demanding application during the test.

Stop crashes that occur after a game starts
A crash to the desktop, a return to the Xbox app or a complete restart has a different troubleshooting path from an immediate Gaming Services error.
When several games crash
- Install all Windows, Xbox, Microsoft Store and handheld-driver updates.
- Enable Xbox mode on startup and disable nonessential startup apps.
- Close duplicate launchers, recording tools and overlays before launching the game.
- Restart after updates and test one known-good title, then the title that crashes.
- Record whether the crash happens at launch, during a menu, after loading a save or only in a particular scene.
This sequence reduces background variables without claiming that a particular driver or setting will fix every crash. If crashes continue across multiple updated games, contact the handheld manufacturer with the model, Windows version, driver versions, game names and the exact point of failure.
When one game crashes
- Check the game’s Xbox label and publisher requirements.
- Install the game’s own update and verify that the handheld has enough free storage for updates and shader data.
- Undo experimental graphics, mod, overlay or compatibility settings for that title.
- Test a new save or another area if the crash is tied to one saved game or scene.
A single-title failure can be game-specific even when the Xbox app and Windows are functioning normally. Do not perform a system-wide service repair for a game that has no Gaming Services error.

Repair Gaming Services for the documented launch errors
Microsoft documents a specific failure in which starting an Xbox Game Pass game redirects you to the Microsoft Store Gaming Services page and displays 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F. Use the repair sequence only when your symptom matches that scenario or Microsoft support directs you to it.
Before the repair
- Write down the exact error code and take a screenshot.
- Install pending Windows, Xbox and Microsoft Store updates, then restart once.
- Save open work and connect the handheld to power.
- Check whether the Xbox app currently offers a built-in Gaming Services Repair Tool or a newer Microsoft support procedure. Microsoft’s documented article for these codes was written for Windows 10, so a current Windows 11 handheld may present a newer option.
Microsoft’s documented sequence
- Sign in with an administrator account and open PowerShell as administrator.
- Copy Microsoft’s Gaming Services removal commands exactly as published for errors
0x80073D26and0x8007139F. The commands remove the Gaming Services package and its service entries; do not substitute commands from an unrelated forum post. - Run the commands, wait for PowerShell to finish and restart the handheld.
- Open the Xbox app. When its Gaming Services banner appears, select Install and allow the component to reinstall.
- Restart if requested, then launch the affected Game Pass title and confirm whether the error is gone.
This procedure changes Windows services, so it carries more risk than changing an in-game option or disabling a startup app. If the commands produce an access, package or path error, stop rather than improvising. Record the message and use Microsoft’s current support instructions or contact support. Do not run the repair merely because a game stutters; the documented symptom is a launch or installation failure involving Gaming Services.
Separate one-title problems from handheld-wide problems

For the ROG XBOX Ally (2025) RC73YA Gaming Handheld PC, ASUS provides a model page with Driver & Tools, product registration, warranty management, technical support and repair-status tracking. Use the exact model page rather than installing a driver intended for another handheld.
- Open the ASUS support page for the ROG XBOX Ally (2025) RC73YA.
- Use Driver & Tools to identify the current BIOS, chipset, graphics and firmware packages for that model.
- Compare the installed versions with the support page and install only packages listed for the RC73YA.
- Register the device if you need warranty or technical support, and keep the purchase information available.
- If the problem persists, use ASUS repair-status tracking after submitting a service request.
ASUS lists security-update support for this product through 31 December 2030 (ASUS ROG, 2025). That date describes the stated security-support period; it does not promise that every game will run at a particular frame rate or that every future title will receive a Handheld optimised label.
When to stop troubleshooting and ask for help
Escalate when the problem survives the low-risk checks, affects several games, or produces a repeatable system crash. Give support information that can distinguish a title problem from a platform problem:
- Handheld model and region, Windows edition and version, and whether Xbox mode is enabled.
- Game name, Xbox compatibility label and whether the failure affects other titles.
- Exact error text or code, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Xbox, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, BIOS and graphics-driver versions.
- Whether the issue occurs on battery, connected power or both.
- The exact step that triggers the failure and what changed immediately before it.
For an ROG Xbox Ally, use ASUS’s technical-support and repair channels after checking the model-specific driver page. For Gaming Services errors, use Microsoft’s current Windows and Xbox support instructions, especially if they differ from the older Windows 10 procedure.
