An Xbox game that will not move past 0%, freezes at one percentage, or reaches 100% and then reports “Installation stopped” is usually recoverable without deleting your installed games. Start with My games & apps > Manage > Queue: pause competing downloads, resume the affected title, and restart the console. Then isolate the cause in this order: network, storage, disc (if physical), and finally the Xbox system or account.
Identify the failure pattern first
The progress pattern and installation type determine which fix is least disruptive. A single digital game with other downloads running needs a different first step from a disc that remains at zero.

Do not repeatedly cancel a large installation before checking the queue, storage, and service conditions. Each new attempt can consume the same bandwidth and disk space while leaving the underlying problem unchanged.

The queue is the fastest way to see whether another game, update, or app is blocking the title you want.

- Open My games & apps from the Xbox dashboard.
- Choose Manage, then open Queue.
- Look for downloads or updates ahead of the stuck game. Pause or cancel nonessential items so the affected title is the only active job.
- Select the stuck game and choose Resume installation.
- Watch the percentage for several minutes. A slow increase is still progress; leave the console on the network rather than interrupting it.
- If it stops at the same point again, select the title, cancel that installation, and start it again from your Microsoft Store library or the game’s store page.
Canceling removes the incomplete installation, not your account entitlement. For a digital purchase, make sure you are signed in to the account that owns the game before starting the replacement download.
2. Close the running game and restart the console
A game left running can compete with installation work for network and storage resources. Quit it before judging the queue.
Normal restart
- Press the Xbox button and choose the power option to restart the console.
- After sign-in, return to My games & apps > Manage > Queue.
- Resume the game if it is paused and check whether the percentage advances.
A restart preserves installed games, saves, and profiles. It is the appropriate next action after queue changes because it reloads the store and installation services without removing content.
Full power cycle
If the queue remains frozen, perform a full power cycle rather than immediately resetting the console.

- Hold the console’s physical power button until the Xbox shuts down completely.
- Disconnect the power cable for a short period.
- Reconnect the cable and start the console.
- Sign in, open the queue, and retry the installation.
This clears temporary system state. It does not delete installed games or apps. If the console will not shut down normally, wait until it is fully off before disconnecting power; do not pull the cable while it is still writing data.
3. Separate a network problem from an Xbox or storage problem
Use the console’s built-in network test before reinstalling a very large game. On the Xbox, open Settings > General > Network settings and run Test network connection. If the test reports an error, fix the connection first and then resume the queue.
Try a wired diagnostic connection
If the console is using Wi‑Fi, temporarily connect it directly to the router with a Cat6 Ethernet cable. This is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee of a faster installation. A wired attempt removes wireless interference and signal strength from the list of possible causes.

- If it fails over both connections, the cause is more likely the queue, Xbox service, storage, package, or account.
- If the network test succeeds but the store will not start any title, check Xbox service availability before repeating downloads.
Do not infer that an Internet speed test alone proves the store can install a game. The console still needs a stable connection to the service, working DNS and router paths, and enough local storage to unpack the content.

4. Check free space and the installation location
Open the console’s storage management view and verify that the selected internal or external drive has enough free capacity for the game and its update. There is no universal free-space number that applies to every Xbox title: the required space varies by game, edition, language packs, and update.
When internal storage is the better test
If only one external-drive title fails, move or reinstall that title on internal storage as an isolation test. Also reseat the external drive’s USB connection and check whether other games on the same drive launch and update normally. A successful internal installation does not, by itself, prove the external drive is defective; it only identifies the storage path as a variable.
What to do when space is tight
- Remove games or apps you can redownload later, rather than deleting saved data.
- Empty incomplete installations left in the queue before checking the available capacity again.
- Leave additional room for an update and temporary unpacking; a drive can report enough space for the base download yet fail during final installation.
After freeing space, restart the console and resume the queue. If the same title still stops at the same percentage, cancel the partial installation and perform a clean reinstall.

5. Recover a physical-disc installation that stops at 0%
A disc-based install can stall when the console tries to read the disc and download an update at the same time. Installing the base game offline separates those operations.

- In the queue, cancel the failed installation.
- Open Settings > General > Network settings and choose Go offline.
- Power-cycle the Xbox using the full shutdown and reconnect procedure above.
- Insert the game disc and let the console install the base game while it is offline.
- When the base installation finishes, reconnect the network.
- Allow the game update to download separately, then check the queue for any remaining content.
Inspect and clean the disc with a soft, lint-free cloth, wiping from the center outward. If the disc is visibly cracked, deeply scratched, or otherwise damaged, replacement may be necessary. Do not use the offline method to bypass ownership checks; the console still needs the disc to launch a disc-based license.
6. Reinstall a digital game without creating another stalled job
Use a reinstall only after queue cleanup, a restart, network testing, and a storage check. Repeating the same download without those checks can reproduce the failure.
- In My games & apps > Manage > Queue, cancel the incomplete installation.
- Restart the Xbox so the canceled job and temporary installer state are cleared.
- Confirm that the console is signed in to the purchasing account and that the destination drive has sufficient space.
- Open My games & apps > Full library (or the Microsoft Store page) and start the installation again.
- Keep other downloads paused until the game has passed the point where it previously stopped.
For a game installed from an external drive, choose internal storage for this one retry. If the internal copy succeeds, you can later move it back using the console’s storage management tools.
7. Account, service, and system checks
Check for a service interruption
When multiple unrelated games and apps fail at once, check the live Xbox service-status information before deleting anything. A service interruption can prevent the store from authenticating, delivering packages, or completing installation even when your home network test is normal. Wait for the service to recover, then resume the existing queue item rather than starting several new downloads.

Install pending console updates
Open the console’s system-update area and apply any pending Xbox update. Restart after the update completes, then test one installation. A system update can repair installer components or compatibility issues that affect more than one title.
Sign-in and ownership checks
If only one account or one purchased title is affected, verify that the owning account is signed in and that the console can open the game’s store page. A license or account error normally appears as an explicit message; record that message instead of repeatedly canceling the queue.
8. Use “Reset and keep my games & apps” only after the basic path
If several games and apps still fail after queue cleanup, restart and power cycle, network and service checks, storage isolation, and a clean reinstall, use the Xbox reset option that preserves installed games and apps. In the console settings, open the reset-console controls and select Reset and keep my games & apps.

Do not jump straight to a complete factory wipe. A full erase removes installed games and apps and creates a much longer recovery download. Reserve it for instructions from Xbox Support or for a situation where the keep-games reset fails and you have confirmed that your saves are synchronized.

What to record before contacting Xbox Support
Escalate when the problem survives the applicable steps above, especially when unrelated games and apps fail. Provide details that let support distinguish a store, account, network, or hardware issue:
- The game title, edition, and whether it is digital or disc-based.
- The exact percentage where it stops and whether it always stops there.
- The complete wording and number of any error message.
- Whether other games and apps install successfully.
- Whether the console was connected by Wi‑Fi or Ethernet when tested.
- The destination drive and the free space shown at the time of failure.
- Which steps were completed, including a normal restart, full power cycle, offline disc install, or keep-games reset.
That record prevents support from sending you through the same checks and helps identify a persistent store or account problem. Keep the console connected and avoid starting several replacement downloads while the case is being diagnosed.
