First identify where the game is failing: a Windows PC using the Xbox app or Microsoft Store, or an Xbox console. The steps below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; they do not apply to Xbox console menus. On Windows, check your account and updates before trying Repair, Reset, or reinstalling the affected app.
Start by identifying the device and scope of the problem
Windows and Xbox consoles have different troubleshooting menus. The Windows steps in this guide are for games launched through the Xbox app or Microsoft Store on a PC. They are not console instructions; if a game will not launch on an Xbox console, use Xbox support for console-specific help.

Also note whether one game fails or several do, and record any error message. That information can help support distinguish a game-specific problem from an issue affecting an app or Windows more broadly; it does not by itself identify the cause.

1. Check your Microsoft account, then restart the app
Confirm that you are signed in to the Microsoft account associated with your apps. Close the Xbox app or Microsoft Store completely, reopen it, and try launching the game again. Microsoft lists signing in and closing and reopening the app among its first steps for Store-app problems: Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store.

2. Install available Windows updates
Check Windows Update for available updates and install them. Also make sure the app is compatible with the Windows version installed on your PC. Microsoft includes Windows updates and app compatibility checks in its Store-app troubleshooting guidance.
3. Update Microsoft Store
Open Microsoft Store and check its Library area for app updates. On Windows 11, select Library, then Get updates. On Windows 10, open See more (the three-dot menu), select Downloads and updates, then Get updates. The wording and placement depend on the Windows version; Microsoft’s guidance covers both.

4. Repair the app, then Reset only if needed
If the Xbox app or Microsoft Store still behaves incorrectly, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the app, open its menu, and choose Advanced options. Select Repair if it is available. If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset. Repair is the less disruptive option to try first; Reset may remove app data or settings. Some apps do not offer these options. 5. Reinstall the app if the earlier steps fail
As a later step, uninstall the affected app and reinstall it from Microsoft Store Library. Reinstalling is more disruptive than closing and reopening or repairing, so try the earlier checks first. Microsoft’s Store-app troubleshooting page includes reinstalling as a possible remedy.

6. Windows 10: run the Store apps troubleshooter if available
Microsoft’s guidance also describes running the Windows Store apps troubleshooter on Windows 10. Use it if you are on Windows 10 and the preceding steps have not resolved the issue.
If Xbox keeps opening the Gaming Services Store page
A redirect to the Microsoft Store Gaming Services page can occur in a specific documented Windows 10 case. Microsoft’s KB5004327 article concerns errors 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F while installing or starting an Xbox Game Pass game: Microsoft KB5004327.

That article describes a Windows 10 issue from June 2021 and a resolution tied to the named Windows 10 builds, including installing the June 11, 2021 out-of-band update KB5004476. It also documents an advanced workaround involving PowerShell, removing Gaming Services packages and service registry entries, restarting Windows, and reinstalling Gaming Services through an Xbox app prompt. This is not a general fix for every launch failure. Do not run package-removal commands or delete service registry entries unless the exact error codes and Windows 10 scenario apply and you are following current Microsoft or Xbox support guidance. What to know if you are still using Windows 10
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. It says that after that date it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10, and recommends moving to Windows 11. This support status is relevant in 2026; it does not establish that upgrading will fix a particular Game Pass launch problem. See Microsoft’s Windows app repair guidance.

If the game still will not open
Contact Microsoft or Xbox support with the device type, Windows version if applicable, the game name, the exact error message or code, and whether one game or multiple games are affected. If the problem is on a console, make that clear so you receive console-specific steps rather than Windows app instructions.
