Choose the disc-equipped PS5 if you want to play PS5 or PS4 game discs, watch movies on disc, or keep the option to use physical media. Choose the PS5 Digital Edition if you plan to buy and download games and do not need a built-in drive. The right choice depends mainly on your media habits, the exact console model, and the prices available where you live.
What is different between the two PS5 editions?
Sony’s US product page presents a disc-equipped PS5 with 1TB of listed storage and a PS5 Digital Edition with 825GB. The disc model supports PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs as well as digital downloads; the Digital Edition has no built-in disc drive and is intended for downloaded games. These are Sony’s listed capacities, not estimates of usable space or how many games either console can hold. PlayStation’s PS5 comparison has the current US descriptions.

| PS5 and PS4 game discs | Supported, according to Sony’s US product page | Not playable without a compatible optional drive |

Sony’s product page does not establish a performance advantage for either edition. Choose based on disc support, storage listed for the models you are comparing, and local pricing—not an assumed difference in how games run.
When should you choose the disc-equipped PS5?
- You own PS5 or PS4 game discs. The disc model is the straightforward option for playing them; the Digital Edition cannot use discs without a compatible add-on drive.
- You want the choice of physical or digital games. The disc console supports both formats, so you are not limited to downloads.
- You use movies on disc. A built-in drive avoids needing to check add-on compatibility for disc playback.
When does the Digital Edition make sense?
The Digital Edition suits players who buy games through PlayStation Store, download their library, and do not need a built-in drive. Its lack of a drive is the defining trade-off: physical game discs cannot be used unless the particular console model supports Sony’s separately sold drive.

Compare the price of the exact Digital Edition with the disc-equipped console in your market. If you might later add a drive, include its separate cost in your comparison. Sony’s pages do not establish a stable price gap between consoles, and prices or availability can change by retailer and region. Sony’s buying page directs buyers to retailers.

Sometimes. Sony sells an optional Disc Drive for specified slim Digital Edition model groups and PS5 Pro. Sony says the drive plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs, and that an internet connection is required to pair it with the console during setup. It is sold separately. How to decide before you buy
- Check your game shelf. If you expect to play PS5 or PS4 discs, choose the disc console or verify that the Digital Edition you are considering supports the add-on drive.
- Decide how you will buy games. If you are content with downloads and do not need disc playback, the Digital Edition may fit your habits.
- Consider movie discs. If you want disc playback, check which model and drive support the formats you use; Sony lists 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD support for its compatible optional drive.
- Compare listed storage and local prices. Sony’s US page lists 1TB for the disc PS5 and 825GB for the Digital Edition. Check the exact regional model and current retailer prices, and include the optional drive cost if it matters to your decision.
- Verify the hardware model before ordering an add-on. Match the console’s CFI model group to Sony’s compatibility information rather than relying on the “Digital Edition” name alone.
