What Xbox error 0x87DD0005 means
Microsoft’s Xbox GDK reference identifies 0x87dd0005 as AM_E_XAST_UNEXPECTED. In practical terms, the Xbox identity service and the Windows game platform have failed to complete a sign-in handoff. The visible message may say that Xbox could not sign you in or that the game cannot connect to Xbox Live.

- Consumer PCs: October 2026 Microsoft Q&A reports describe games rejecting sign-in after a Windows 11 update even though Microsoft Store and the Xbox app could still accept the user’s account. Those are user reports, not a Microsoft incident bulletin.
- Developer sandboxes: Microsoft Learn documents the code when the Windows PC platform is not enabled for an Xbox title in Partner Center. That explanation applies to a developer configuration, not to an ordinary home PC.
There is no authoritative statistic for how many devices are affected. A successful Store sign-in therefore does not rule out an Xbox or Gaming Services problem, and the error alone does not prove that Windows Update is responsible.
Before changing Windows settings
Record the symptoms
Write down the exact hexadecimal code, the game or games that fail, the approximate time the problem began, and whether you can sign in to Microsoft Store and the Xbox app. Also note your Windows 11 edition, including whether it is an N edition. These details determine which branch of the procedure is useful and make a later support request actionable.
Check whether the failure is service-wide
Open the official Xbox status page and look specifically at Account & profile and any service connected to the game. If a service is degraded or under maintenance, do not reset applications yet. Wait for the status to return to normal, then restart the game and test again. A local repair cannot fix an Xbox outage.

1. Align the Microsoft Store and Xbox accounts
A mismatch between the account that owns the game (or Game Pass entitlement) and the account used by Xbox can produce a sign-in failure even when both applications appear to be working.
- Open Microsoft Store, select your profile icon, and choose Sign out.
- Open the Xbox app, open its profile menu, and sign out there as well.
- Restart Windows from Start > Power > Restart. Use Restart rather than shutting down so Windows reloads the services in the same session.
- After Windows starts, open Microsoft Store first and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game or the active Game Pass subscription.
- Open Xbox and sign in with that same account.
- Launch the affected game and test sign-in.
If the game works after this sequence, the issue was an account or token alignment problem. Keep the accounts consistent when adding another PC or reinstalling a game.

2. Install Windows and Microsoft Store updates
Microsoft Support recommends checking Windows Update and updating Store applications when a Windows 11 Store app misbehaves.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates. Install all offered updates, including servicing or cumulative updates, and restart when Windows requests it.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library, then choose Get updates. Allow Xbox, Gaming Services, and other related Store components to finish updating.
- Restart Windows once more and test the game.
Do not describe KB5127648 or KB5127694 as a confirmed cause. They were released on October 13, 2026, and reports appeared afterward, but Microsoft had not confirmed the connection as of October 15 and did not list this Xbox error in the published known-issues information.
3. Repair the Xbox app before resetting it
Repair is the least disruptive app-level action. It attempts to correct the installation without deleting the app’s local data.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, select the three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Open Xbox, sign in if prompted, and test the affected game.
If Repair does not change the error, repeat the same path for Microsoft Store and Gaming Services, choosing Repair for each before testing again.
4. Reset Xbox, Microsoft Store, and Gaming Services only when needed
Reset is more disruptive than Repair. It removes the selected app’s local data and you will need to sign in again. It does not by itself prove that the Windows update was at fault.

- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- For Xbox, open the three-dot menu, select Advanced options, then choose Reset.
- Repeat for Microsoft Store and Gaming Services.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Microsoft Store first and sign in with the account that owns the game or Game Pass.
- Open Xbox, sign in with the same account, and launch the game.
Expect to re-enter credentials and to lose local settings held by the reset applications. If the game stores saves locally, verify that your saves are synchronized before using Reset; the reset operation itself is not a substitute for a save backup.

Gaming Services provides the Windows components used by many Xbox PC games. Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC is designed to diagnose and repair those components.
- Open Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC.
- Follow each prompt in the tool, allowing it to complete its checks and repairs.
- Restart Windows when the tool asks you to, even if the tool reports that a repair was completed successfully.
- Open Microsoft Store, confirm the correct account is signed in, then open Xbox and test the game.
If the tool reports that it cannot complete a repair, record that message with the original error code. Do not assume that repeatedly running it will solve an account, service-status, or profile problem.
6. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft Support says Windows 11 users should start the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
- Open Get Help from the Start menu.
- Start the automated Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Answer the prompts and let the diagnostics run.
- When Get Help recommends a restart, restart Windows.
- After the restart, return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates again.
- Test Microsoft Store, Xbox, and the affected game.
The troubleshooter can identify update problems, but it is not a guaranteed Xbox repair. Its diagnostic result is useful evidence if the sign-in error persists.

7. Check for the Windows 11 N edition
Windows 11 N omits certain media technologies. Microsoft’s Xbox troubleshooting guidance recommends installing the Media Feature Pack for this edition before retesting Xbox sign-in.
- Open Settings > Apps > Optional features.
- Choose View features (or Add an optional feature, depending on the current Settings layout).
- Search for Media Feature Pack, select it, and choose Next > Install.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Sign in to Microsoft Store first, then Xbox, and test the game.
If your edition is not Windows 11 N, this branch does not apply.
8. Test with a temporary Windows account
A second Windows profile is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed repair. It helps separate a profile-local problem from an account, service, or system-wide failure.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Choose Add account and create a temporary local Windows account. You can select the option to add a user without a Microsoft account when prompted.
- Sign out of your normal profile and sign in to the temporary account.
- Open Microsoft Store and Xbox, sign in with the account that owns the game or Game Pass, and test the affected title.
Interpret the result carefully:
- Works in the temporary profile: the original Windows profile likely has damaged local app data, credentials, or configuration. Keep the temporary profile only for testing; repair the original profile or move to a fresh profile after preserving personal files.
- Fails in both profiles: the cause is more likely a service outage, account entitlement, Gaming Services installation, Windows component, or system-wide update interaction.

Developer and Xbox sandbox scenario
If you are developing or testing an Xbox title rather than playing a consumer game, use the Partner Center explanation instead of applying consumer resets first.
Microsoft Learn lists 0x87dd0005 (AM_E_XAST_UNEXPECTED) when the Windows PC platform is not enabled in the title’s configuration. The documented developer fix is to enable Windows 10 (and later) PC in Partner Center, publish the Xbox settings, and allow about 30 minutes for the change to propagate.
- Open the title’s configuration in Partner Center.
- Enable the Windows 10 (and later) PC platform.
- Publish the Xbox settings.
- Wait approximately 30 minutes for propagation.
- Retest the sandbox or development build.
Do not treat this as evidence that a normal consumer PC has a Partner Center configuration problem. The setting exists for developer and sandbox environments.
What not to assume about this error
- Do not call the October update the confirmed cause. The timing was reported by users, but Microsoft had not confirmed causation.
- Do not use the Partner Center fix on a consumer installation. It addresses a developer platform configuration.
- Do not promise that cache clearing, service changes, or reinstalling will work on every machine. User reports include unsuccessful attempts and anecdotal workarounds; none is a universal fix established by the available evidence.
- Do not infer that Store access means Xbox is healthy. Store and Xbox can accept the same account while a game’s Xbox sign-in handoff fails.
- Do not repeatedly reset apps without recording results. Each reset removes local data and makes it harder to tell which change affected the problem.
When to escalate the problem
Contact Microsoft or Xbox support after you have checked service status, aligned accounts, installed updates, repaired or reset the affected apps, run Gaming Services Repair Tool, and tested a second profile when practical. Include:
- The exact code:
0x87DD0005. - Your Windows 11 edition and build information.
- Whether the issue began after the October 13, 2026 updates KB5127648 or KB5127694, stated as timing rather than proof of cause.
- Whether Microsoft Store sign-in works.
- Whether Xbox app sign-in works.
- The game or games affected.
- Results from Repair, Reset, Gaming Services Repair Tool, the Windows Update troubleshooter, and the temporary-profile test.
- Any Xbox status incident visible when the failure occurred.
This evidence distinguishes an entitlement or account problem from a Windows profile, Gaming Services, update, or service-side failure and prevents support from asking you to repeat steps without context.

Verify the fix
A successful fix should survive a complete sign-out and restart. Sign out of Microsoft Store and Xbox, restart Windows, sign back in to Microsoft Store with the game-owning account, sign in to Xbox with that same account, and launch the previously failing game. Test at least one additional Xbox-linked title if available. If only one game still fails while other Xbox games work, record that difference; it points toward a title-specific entitlement or configuration issue rather than a general Windows sign-in failure.
