Start with the controller’s power, then compare its behavior across connection methods, games, or devices. That helps narrow down whether the problem is power, a particular host or game, or the controller itself. Drift and unresponsive buttons can have different causes, so no single reset or calibration step is a guaranteed fix.
Why won’t my Xbox controller connect or stay on?
Check power first
Verify that the batteries are charged and seated correctly, or check the controller’s other power source if applicable. If possible, try a known-good compatible power option. Battery problems can look like connection failures, so rule them out before treating the issue as a pairing fault. Microsoft’s older Xbox One troubleshooting document also lists battery verification as a first check: Xbox controller troubleshooting.
Compare wireless and wired behavior
If your controller and host support a wired connection, try it and compare the result with wireless use. If wired works reliably but wireless does not, that points toward the wireless connection path; if the same problem occurs both ways, the issue may be broader. This comparison helps narrow the fault, but does not by itself repair it.
Pairing steps vary by controller generation and host. Use the current Xbox Support instructions for your specific controller and device rather than applying steps intended for a different model.

Check whether the problem follows the controller
If the fault occurs only with one game or one host, do not assume the controller is broken. Where practical, test another game or compatible device. A problem confined to one setup may lie outside the controller; a problem that follows it across setups makes a controller-side issue more plausible.
Why aren’t my Xbox controller buttons working?
Identify how widespread the problem is
Note whether one button fails, several buttons fail, or inputs behave unexpectedly. Then check whether the same symptom appears in more than one game or on another compatible device. A single-game symptom differs from a problem that follows the controller across multiple setups. Microsoft’s older Xbox One troubleshooting document includes unresponsive controls among the symptoms to investigate, but it does not establish one universal cause or fix.

Use caution with resets, cleaning, and disassembly
Do not assume that cleaning, resetting, remapping, or rolling back firmware will solve a hardware fault. The guidance available here does not establish a current, general procedure for those steps across Xbox controller models. Avoid opening the controller as a first-line check.
For advanced repair, Microsoft Learn provides component repair guidance specifically for the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, including button work and safety cautions: Elite Series 2 component repair. Those instructions should not be treated as a procedure for other Xbox controllers.

How do I fix Xbox controller stick drift?
Describe the symptom before choosing a fix
Stick drift means a character, cursor, or camera moves even though you are not commanding that movement. If the stick instead feels awkward to calibrate or responds inconsistently, record that separately; these symptoms do not prove a particular cause. Microsoft’s older Xbox One troubleshooting document lists both joystick drift and calibration issues, but it does not establish a universal remedy.
Distinguish a software check from a physical fault
A calibration check, where supported by the specific model and platform, is not proof that worn or damaged stick hardware has been repaired. The available guidance does not verify one current calibration tool for every Xbox controller, nor that recalibration reverses physical wear. If you have an Elite Series 2 and are considering component work, follow Microsoft’s model-specific instructions and safety cautions rather than treating them as a casual cleaning guide.

Should I repair or replace my Xbox controller?
Before paying for a repair or a replacement, check whether Microsoft offers service for your exact controller and whether your order is eligible. Microsoft’s service-order information lists Xbox Wireless Controller models and describes service options, including replacement handling in eligible cases.
