To edit an AI-generated image without changing its subject, work from the existing image, specify one narrow change, and clearly state what must stay fixed. Select or mask the target area when the editor allows it, then inspect the result. A selection helps focus an edit, but it cannot guarantee that the subject or surrounding pixels will remain untouched.
Use the existing image as your starting point
Open or upload the image you want to keep, then ask the editor to modify that image rather than generating the whole scene again from a fresh description. OpenAI recommends passing the previous output into the next edit and making one change at a time in its image-generation guidance.

Starting from the image gives the editor the actual subject, composition, lighting, and style to work from. It does not ensure every detail will be preserved, so treat each result as a variation to review.
Write a prompt that separates the change from the things to preserve
Name the feature you want changed and describe the intended result. Then spell out the relevant traits that must stay the same: for example, the person’s identity and face, a product’s shape, the subject’s pose or expression, or the scene’s composition and palette. OpenAI’s guidance condenses the principle to identifying what should change and what must stay the same.

A reusable prompt pattern is:
Change only [specific feature or selected area]. Preserve [the subject’s identity, face, shape, pose, expression, and other relevant details]. Keep everything outside the selected area unchanged. Match the original lighting, perspective, and style. Make no other changes.
Replace the bracketed text with details that fit the image. If you are not using a selection, describe the target’s location and appearance as specifically as possible. This wording is a practical synthesis of vendor guidance, not a guaranteed command or a verbatim vendor prompt.

Localize the edit with a selection or mask
When the editor provides a selection tool, mark the area you want changed before prompting. A mask serves a similar purpose in workflows that support mask-based editing. This gives the tool a spatial target and can help control the rest of the image; it does not make the boundary exact.
For example, if you want to change a background object but keep a person as they are, select the object rather than describing a new version of the entire scene. Check the selection closely around edges such as hair, clothing, or transparent objects, where a small boundary error can affect the subject.

Make one change at a time and inspect the result
- Review the first result. Compare the subject’s defining features with the original, not just the edited area. Look for changes to identity, face, shape, pose, expression, lighting, or composition that matter for your image.
- If the subject drifted, undo or refine. Undo the edit where available, adjust the selection or mask, and restate the preservation constraints in the next prompt. Adobe’s Photoshop guidance likewise recommends reviewing variations and refining the selection or prompt.
- Save only after checking the whole image. A change can look convincing inside the target area while also altering nearby details.
ChatGPT’s image editor includes selection, undo, redo, and save controls, but its Help Center guidance warns that selection highlights may be imprecise and edits can extend beyond them. Treat that warning as a useful rule for generative editors generally: inspect pixels outside the selection as well as inside it.

Adobe’s page lists Firefly Fill & Expand, Firefly Image 5, Firefly Image 1, FLUX.2 pro, FLUX Kontext pro, Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2, and Gemini 3 with Nano Banana Pro. It also says Google is deprecating Gemini 2.5 with Nano Banana beginning October 2, 2026, and Photoshop removes support in the September 2026 build (v27.11) and later. Because model support and interface details can change, check the current picker for your Photoshop version and account.

Choose by controls, not promises of perfect preservation
For this task, compare the available tools by the practical controls they offer:
- Can you select or mask the target precisely enough for the edit?
- Can you use a reference image if the change depends on a particular object or appearance?
- Can you review variations and undo or revise a result without rebuilding the image?
- Can you inspect the result easily, including details just outside the selection?
- Are the feature and model available in your current version and account?
Official documentation confirms these workflow features, but the reviewed sources do not provide a named statistic for how reliably any tool preserves a subject or a benchmark comparing these tools on that task. There is no evidence here to support a claim that one guarantees better identity preservation.
