AI image editing combines an existing image, a written instruction, and—when supported—additional reference images or an edit mask to generate a changed image. The result depends on all of those inputs plus the editor’s model and settings; a prompt is guidance, not a deterministic command. You can improve the odds of a controlled edit by assigning each reference a clear role, naming both the change and the details to preserve, and checking the whole image afterward.
What happens when you ask an AI to edit an image?
At the user-facing level, an editor receives an image and an instruction describing the desired change. Depending on the product, you may also provide other images as references, select or mask an area, or choose settings such as output size, format, or quality. The system generates a revised image from those inputs. The exact controls and limits vary by product and model.

That description explains the workflow, not every internal step. Public API documentation specifies inputs and request behavior; it does not disclose the complete technical pipeline behind image generation. An image prompt also cannot guarantee that every detail will be followed exactly.
OpenAI’s image prompting guide says results depend on the prompt, reference images, output dimensions, and settings. In practice, the same request can produce unwanted changes, so treat each output as a candidate to inspect rather than a guaranteed edit.

How to use reference images effectively
A reference image gives the editor visual information that may be difficult to pin down with words alone: a person’s appearance, an object’s details, a scene, or a visual style. When you attach multiple images, say what each one is for and how they should relate. Otherwise, the editor may not infer which image supplies the subject, setting, or look you intend.
For a localized change
Use the original image as the edit target. Name the object or area to change, then state which nearby features should remain stable. For example: “Remove the red cup from the table. Keep the person’s pose, the table, the lighting, and the composition unchanged.” This makes the requested change and preservation constraints explicit, but does not lock those details perfectly.
For a style change
Identify the image that supplies the style and name the relevant qualities, such as its palette, texture, or medium. Describe the subject separately. For example: “Use the first image for its muted watercolor palette and paper texture. Keep the subject from the second image, a small sailboat, and place it on a calm lake.”

For a composite
Label the scene image and the subject image, describe what should move into the scene, and specify how it should fit. For example: “Use image one as the background. Place the bicycle from image two beside the bench, matching the scene’s camera angle, scale, and late-afternoon lighting.” These are prompt patterns, not guarantees of a seamless result.
OpenAI’s prompt guide demonstrates assigning roles to references and combining them, and its image edit API supports multiple source images. Other editors may accept a different number or type of inputs, so check the documentation for the specific tool you use.
How to keep the same person, character, or product
Separate what should change from what defines the subject. Identify the subject in the source image, name the features or proportions to retain, and describe the new setting or styling as a separate instruction. For example: “Keep the same person, including their short curly hair, round glasses, and face shape. Change the background to a bookstore; do not change their clothing or pose.”

Subject consistency is a capability to aim for, not a promise of pixel-identical identity. OpenAI says Images 2.5 is “better at working from reference photos to transform familiar subjects across new settings, visual styles, and compositions” in its product announcement. That is a claim about a named OpenAI product, not independent evidence of a consistency rate or a guarantee for other tools. Google likewise documents model-specific character-resemblance and object-fidelity capabilities in its Gemini image-generation documentation; those descriptions are specific to its models.

For a sequence of edits, inspect each version before building on it. Small changes to facial features, logos, product proportions, or other distinctive details can accumulate over multiple turns. Keep the original so you can restart if a later edit alters something important.
How to limit unwanted changes
Make the prompt specific about the target, the intended change, and the context that must stay stable. For a local edit, identify the region in words or use the editor’s selection or mask tool if available. A selection communicates where to focus, but it is not necessarily a hard pixel-level boundary.

OpenAI’s edit API documents mask input for supported workflows. Its ChatGPT help page warns that highlights are not always precise and that edits may extend beyond the selected area. After each operation, inspect the full image—not just the selected region—and compare it with the original.
- Request one change at a time when an edit has several unrelated goals.
- State what must remain unchanged, such as pose, composition, lighting, face, product shape, or label text.
- Keep a clean copy of the original and save intermediate versions.
- Check edges and nearby areas for spillover, along with text, logos, and small identifying details.
These steps reduce ambiguity and make mistakes easier to detect; they do not guarantee that the model will preserve every unmentioned pixel.

Why AI changes things you did not ask it to change
A prompt describes an intended result, but the editor generates a new image rather than applying a guaranteed, exact instruction to every pixel. The output is shaped by the source image, any references, the wording, and model-specific settings. Instructions can be ambiguous or compete with one another, and even a clear selection may not contain the edit perfectly.

When an important detail changes, make the target and preservation requirement more explicit, simplify the request, and try a smaller edit. If the product offers masks or other controls, use them to indicate the region, then check for changes outside it. For text, faces, or product details that must be exact, verify the result manually and use a suitable finishing tool if needed.
How to compare image editors for your task
There is no established universal subject-consistency rate that predicts how every editor will perform. Compare tools using the work you actually need to do. Where the products allow it, hold the source images, prompt, and output dimensions constant, then review multiple results. OpenAI’s guide recommends workload-specific evaluation and notes that matching quality labels do not mean models have equal quality or response time.

Check the current limits of the tool you use
Image counts, supported formats, file-size ceilings, mask behavior, fidelity settings, output options, availability, and watermarking differ across products and models and can change. Check the current documentation before preparing a batch or relying on a particular control. OpenAI’s edit API reference documents request-specific constraints and parameters; Google’s Gemini documentation lists model-specific reference-image and fidelity details and says generated images include SynthID watermarking. Those are product-specific statements, not universal rules for all AI image editors.
