Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →An Xbox update that will not finish is usually recoverable without deleting your games. Start by checking Xbox service status, retry the normal online update, and record the console’s version and update history. If the console loops, will not boot, or displays an E-code, open Startup Troubleshooter and use the least-destructive option first. A correctly prepared Offline System Update (OSU1) USB is the next step when online recovery cannot complete; a full reset or repair comes later.
Use this recovery order
Follow the paths in order rather than repeatedly restarting the same failed download. Each step changes something different, so you can tell whether the problem is a service outage, an online update failure, damaged software state, or a condition that needs service.

- Check Xbox service availability. Open the official Xbox Live status page. If an incident affecting sign-in, downloads, or console services is shown, wait for service to be restored before trying the update again.
- Retry the standard online update. Connect the console to the internet and use the model’s Settings path described below.
- Verify the result. Check the installed system version and the record of the latest update.
- Open Startup Troubleshooter if the update loops or the console will not start. Use the Pair and, where present, Eject button sequence to reach recovery tools.
- Choose Reset this Xbox > Keep games & apps when it is offered. This is the recommended first reset because it is intended to preserve installed games and apps, although settings and account data may need to be configured again.
- Run OSU1 (Offline System Update) if online recovery still cannot complete.
- Use the complete error code in Xbox Support’s lookup when an E-code or hexadecimal code remains on screen.
- Request Microsoft/Xbox device service if the documented recovery paths fail.
Do not jump straight to “Remove everything.” It erases local content and is a final software-recovery option, not a routine update fix.
Check whether Xbox service is down
An update can appear stuck when the console cannot reach a required online service. Before changing console settings or preparing a USB drive, check the official Xbox Live status page from a phone or computer. If Microsoft lists an incident, leave the console in its current state, wait until the incident is cleared, and then retry the update. Repeated retries during an outage do not provide a useful diagnosis and can leave you with the same error.

If no incident is listed, continue with the local and network steps below. A clear status page does not prove that your particular network is working; it only means no broad service problem is currently reported.
Run the normal online update on Xbox One or Xbox Series
Open Update console
- Turn on the console and sign in if the dashboard loads.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates & downloads.
- Select Update console.
- Allow the download and installation to finish without powering off the console.
Microsoft states that if No console update available is grayed out instead of Update console, the console is already up to date. In that case, the screen is not reporting a failed update; there is simply no newer package available through the normal channel.
Confirm what actually installed
After the console returns to the dashboard, open Settings > System > Console info to see the system version. For the update record, open System > Updates & downloads > Latest console update status. Record the version and any status or error text before attempting a reset. That information is useful if the same failure returns or you contact support.

If the download does not move
- Confirm that the console is still connected to the internet and that other devices on the same connection can reach the web.
- Check Xbox service status again, especially if the console changed from downloading to an error.
- Retry once after the service and connection checks. If the console repeatedly returns to the same update screen, stop looping the online attempt and move to Startup Troubleshooter.
The available Microsoft material does not establish a universal download time or success rate. The time shown on your console depends on the package and connection, so a fixed “normal” number is not a reliable test.
Open Startup Troubleshooter when the console loops or will not boot
Startup Troubleshooter is the recovery menu used when the dashboard is unavailable or an update repeatedly fails. Power the console off completely before trying to open it; do not use sleep or leave it at the frozen update screen.
Models with an Eject button
- Disconnect the console from the frozen screen by powering it off completely.
- Press and hold Pair and Eject.
- While holding those buttons, press the Xbox power button on the console.
- Continue holding the buttons until Startup Troubleshooter appears.
Xbox Series S and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition
These models do not have an Eject button for this procedure. Hold Pair while pressing the console’s Xbox power button, and keep holding until Startup Troubleshooter appears.

| Online update | Working internet access and available Xbox services | Designed to preserve local data | The console reaches Settings or offers the update normally |
| Reset this Xbox > Keep games & apps | Startup Troubleshooter | Installed games and apps are intended to remain; settings and account data may need to be restored | Online update loops or the system software will not start correctly |
| Reset this Xbox > Remove everything | Startup Troubleshooter | Erases local content; most destructive software option | Only after less-destructive recovery has failed and you accept the data loss |
| Offline System Update (OSU1) | Windows PC with internet, current OSU1 package, and NTFS USB media of at least 6 GB | Bypasses the console’s normal download path; follow the on-screen recovery result | The console cannot complete an online update but Startup Troubleshooter works |
| Microsoft/Xbox device service | Device and regional service process | Outcome depends on model, warranty, region, and diagnosis | Documented software recovery does not resolve the failure |
Keep games and apps first
In Startup Troubleshooter, select Reset this Xbox, then choose Keep games & apps when available. This option is more disruptive than a normal retry, but Microsoft support guidance recommends it before removing everything. Be prepared to sign in again and recheck settings after the reset.
Why Remove everything is a last resort
Remove everything erases local content. Use it only when the keep-games-and-apps reset and the offline update have failed, or when Microsoft Support specifically directs it. Confirm that any content you cannot replace is synchronized or backed up before accepting this option.

Use OSU1 for an offline system update
OSU1 bypasses the console’s ordinary download route. It is useful when the system can open Startup Troubleshooter but cannot finish an online update. You need a Windows PC with internet access and a USB flash drive with at least 6 GB of capacity, formatted as NTFS. Microsoft’s procedure requires NTFS; exFAT and FAT32 do not meet that requirement for this recovery process.
Prepare the USB drive
- On the Windows PC, obtain the current official OSU1 package from Xbox Support.
- Format the USB flash drive as NTFS. Formatting removes files already on the drive, so copy anything you need elsewhere first.
- Extract the downloaded package.
- Copy the package’s
$SystemUpdatefolder directly to the root of the USB drive. The root is the top level you see when opening the drive, not a subfolder such asDownloadsor another directory. - Let the download and extraction finish completely, then safely eject the drive from Windows.
Install from Startup Troubleshooter
- Power the Xbox off completely.
- Insert the prepared USB drive into the console.
- Open Startup Troubleshooter with the Pair/Eject sequence for your model.
- Select Offline system update.
- Follow the on-screen prompts and leave the USB drive connected until the process finishes or reports a failure.
OSU1 is a recovery package, not a general-purpose way to install arbitrary firmware. Use the current package supplied by Xbox Support for the console’s recovery process and do not rename the $SystemUpdate folder.
When OSU1 fails immediately
An immediate failure usually means the recovery environment did not accept the media or could not read a complete package. Rebuild the drive once using this checklist:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- The drive is formatted as NTFS, not exFAT or FAT32.
- The USB has at least 6 GB of capacity.
$SystemUpdateis at the USB root, not nested inside another folder.- The OSU1 download and extraction completed without interruption.
- Unrelated files have been removed from the drive.
- Other external drives are disconnected while recovery is running, so the console has only the intended update media to inspect.
- The USB is fully inserted and the console is restarted into Startup Troubleshooter before selecting Offline system update.
Retry once with a known-good USB drive after correcting these items. If the same failure appears with correctly prepared media, record the exact screen message and move to the error-code lookup or service escalation rather than repeatedly reformatting drives.
Read E100, E101, E102, E200, E208, and 0x… errors correctly
An E-code is not a universal diagnosis. The same-looking recovery screen can lead to different instructions depending on the console model, software state, and the complete hexadecimal code. Enter every character shown, including any secondary group beginning with 0x, in Xbox Support’s error-code lookup.
Capture the complete code
- Photograph the screen or write the code down before restarting.
- Include the leading letter, all digits, and every hexadecimal group.
- Note whether the code appeared during an online update, after a reset, or while selecting OSU1.
- Record the console model, because recovery instructions can differ between models.
Do not apply a generic “E-code fix” copied for a different model. Code-specific instructions can change the correct order of reset, offline update, and service steps.

Know when software troubleshooting is finished
Escalate to Microsoft/Xbox device service after the console still fails following service-status checks, a normal update attempt, the keep-games-and-apps reset when available, and one correctly prepared OSU1 attempt. Microsoft support responders associate repeated reset and OSU failures with a possible repair case, but only service diagnostics can confirm a hardware fault.
Have this information ready for support:
- Console model and, if visible, the system version from Settings > System > Console info.
- The complete E-code or hexadecimal code.
- What happened during the online update and whether the console reached Startup Troubleshooter.
- Whether Keep games & apps reset was attempted.
- How the USB was prepared for OSU1, including NTFS formatting and drive capacity.
- The region and warranty details, which can affect service options and cost.
Do not assume a repair charge or outcome in advance: those depend on the model, warranty, region, and the diagnosis made by the service process.
Quick Recap
A concise decision guide
- Dashboard works and Update console is available: check service status, then run the online update.
- “No console update available” is grayed out: Microsoft says the console is already up to date; verify the version and latest-update status instead of forcing another update.
- Update repeats or the console will not boot: open Startup Troubleshooter and choose Keep games & apps before destructive options.
- Startup Troubleshooter opens but online recovery fails: prepare an NTFS USB of at least 6 GB on a Windows PC and run OSU1.
- OSU1 fails immediately: check NTFS, capacity, root-folder placement, complete extraction, and disconnected extra drives, then retry once.
- An E-code remains: use the complete code in Xbox Support’s lookup; instructions are code- and model-specific.
- All documented recovery paths fail: submit the console for Microsoft/Xbox service.
