Most World of Warcraft access problems become easier once you separate the game version, Battle.net account entitlement, and launcher or file error involved. Install every version from the Battle.net desktop app, use Locate the game if an existing copy is incorrectly shown as uninstalled, and treat account locks separately from download failures. Modern WoW can be played free through level 20; Classic versions and selected modes require game time or a subscription. The steps below match the error or message you see so you can avoid an unnecessary reinstall.
Start by identifying which problem you have
The same Battle.net screen can represent very different causes. Use the wording of the message and the game mode selected in the launcher before changing files or buying game time.

Install World of Warcraft through Battle.net
Blizzard states: “All versions and game modes of World of Warcraft are installed through the Battle.net desktop app.” The desktop app is therefore the correct starting point for Modern WoW and the Classic releases; downloading a separate installer for each mode is not the supported workflow.

- Open the Battle.net desktop app and sign in to the account that owns, or will use, the game.
- Select the World of Warcraft icon.
- Choose the required game entry: Modern WoW, WoW Classic Era, or Cataclysm Classic.
- Click Install, choose the installation location offered by the app, and allow the download to finish.
- Launch the same entry after installation. If you want another version, select it and install it separately.
Each version is installed separately. Having Modern WoW installed does not automatically install Classic Era or Cataclysm Classic, and selecting a different entry can make the launcher appear to be offering a new installation.

Check the selected mode before troubleshooting
When a download appears unexpectedly large, an update seems to start from zero, or a subscription message appears, look at the game entry selected under the WoW icon. A mode change can explain the behavior without any damaged files. Complete the mode selection before deleting folders or reinstalling the launcher.
When Battle.net shows “Install” for an existing copy
An Install button does not necessarily mean that the game files are gone. Battle.net may have lost the installation location after a drive change, app update, restored backup, or account switch. Reinstalling immediately can waste time and disk space.
- Open the WoW page in Battle.net and select the game version that is already present on the computer.
- Use Locate the game instead of Install.
- Browse to and select the folder containing that version’s current installation.
- Let Battle.net scan and register the files.
- Confirm that the button changes to Play. If it does, the existing files have been linked rather than downloaded again.
If the button remains Install, check that you selected the folder for the same version shown in the launcher. A Modern WoW folder cannot satisfy a request to locate Classic Era, and vice versa. Also verify that you are signed in to the Battle.net account you used when the copy was installed.

Fix World of Warcraft login and account-lock problems
Login failures are not all launcher failures. An incorrect password, an account mismatch, a missing BattleTag, and a security lock require account actions; changing game files will not resolve them.

Confirm the account and BattleTag
- Check the email address or account identifier currently displayed in Battle.net.
- Make sure you are using the account that owns the relevant game time, subscription, or redeemed code.
- Verify the BattleTag when the launcher requests it. A missing or incorrect BattleTag is specifically associated with BLZBNTBNA00000A8E.
Do not assume that installing the game under one account makes it available to every account on the computer. Entitlements and security checks follow the signed-in Battle.net account.
Respond to an unusual-activity or lock message
Blizzard may trigger a secure check after unusual or suspicious login activity. In that situation, use the official Can’t Log In recovery flow rather than repeatedly guessing credentials. The recovery process can require access to the account email or phone. Phone notifications and a Battle.net Authenticator can help verify that you are the legitimate account holder.
- Open the Can’t Log In recovery option from the Blizzard sign-in flow.
- Follow the account-identification and verification prompts.
- Complete any email, phone, or Authenticator check that is offered.
- After access is restored, return to Battle.net and confirm that the correct WoW version and account are selected.
If you cannot access the recovery email or phone, the launcher cannot bypass that security decision. Use the account-support route and provide the requested ownership information instead of creating another installation.

Download problems generally involve the connection, security software, another application using the files, or Battle.net’s local tools. Work from the least destructive checks to the reset that applies to a specific error code.

Basic download checks
- Confirm that the intended WoW entry is selected: Modern WoW, WoW Classic Era, or Cataclysm Classic.
- Check that the internet connection is working normally and remains connected while the launcher downloads.
- Allow Blizzard applications through the computer’s security software. Firewall or antivirus rules that block the launcher can prevent a download or update from opening files.
- Close competing or conflicting applications before restarting the download.
- Reopen Battle.net and retry the operation.
The exact security-software interface differs by operating system and product, so add the Blizzard applications to the permitted list using that software’s own controls. If a managed or work network blocks the traffic, testing another network can distinguish a local network restriction from a game-file problem.
Do not confuse a slow download with a missing installation
A paused or slow transfer does not justify selecting Install on a copy that is already present. First use Locate the game as described above. If Battle.net recognizes the files, it can resume or verify the appropriate version without starting a second copy.
BLZBNTBNA00000A8E: BattleTag, launcher, or service-side checks
BLZBNTBNA00000A8E can be caused by a server-side condition or by a missing BattleTag. Start with the account information before changing the installation.
- Verify that the BattleTag exists and is correctly associated with the signed-in account.
- Close and reopen Battle.net, then try the login or game launch again.
- If the error persists, reinstall the Battle.net desktop app using the current downloaded client.
- Try the operation from an administrator account on the computer, where permitted by the system owner.
- Test another network. A different connection can show whether the original network is preventing the launcher from reaching Blizzard’s services.
A server-side cause may not be fixed by any local change. If the BattleTag is correct and the error remains on more than one network, record the code and the steps already attempted before contacting support rather than repeatedly reinstalling WoW itself.

BLZBNTBTS0000004E: files cannot be opened
BLZBNTBTS0000004E indicates that required files cannot be opened. Blizzard’s documented checks focus on the downloaded client, the connection, security software, conflicting applications, and the Battle.net Tools folder.
- Make sure you are using the downloaded Battle.net client and that the download completed correctly.
- Check the internet connection and retry after it is stable.
- Allow Blizzard applications through firewall or antivirus software.
- Close applications that could be using, locking, or interfering with the same files.
- Exit Blizzard applications completely.
- Delete the Battle.net Tools folder, then start Battle.net again so the launcher can rebuild its local tools.
- Retry the WoW download or update.
Deleting the Tools folder targets Battle.net’s local launcher data; it is not the same as deleting the WoW installation folder. Do not remove the game directory when the error specifically calls for rebuilding Battle.net Tools.

The phrase “you need a subscription” can be correct for one WoW mode and unexpected for another. Identify the mode first, then verify the entitlement on the account that is signed in.

What the level-20 trial does and does not mean
Modern WoW’s free access ends at level 20. It is not an unlimited trial of every WoW release. Reaching the level-20 boundary, or selecting a Classic mode, can therefore produce a legitimate request for game time or a subscription rather than a launcher malfunction.
Verify an entitlement before purchasing again
- Look at the account currently signed in to Battle.net.
- Confirm that the WoW mode you launched matches the entitlement you intended to use.
- If you bought access through the Blizzard shop, check that the order status is Complete.
- If you used a third-party code, confirm that it was redeemed on this same Battle.net account.
- Restart Battle.net after the account or order status has been corrected, then check the game entry again.
An order that is not marked Complete, or a code redeemed on a different account, will not unlock the account currently displayed in the launcher. Checking these details prevents paying twice for an entitlement that is already attached elsewhere.
Separate account and security causes from launcher, file, and network causes
Use the following decision path to choose the right fix instead of applying every possible remedy.

This separation matters because an account recovery cannot repair a blocked file, while deleting launcher data cannot unlock an account after a security challenge.
When to contact WoW support
If the documented steps do not restore access, submit the case through Blizzard’s World of Warcraft support hub. Choose the category that matches the evidence:
- Account: login failures, unusual-activity checks, locks, or account access.
- Payments: missing game time, subscription status, shop orders, or redeemed-code entitlement.
- Technical: Battle.net installation, download, update, file, or network errors.
- In-Game Issues: a problem that occurs after you can launch and enter the game.
Include the exact error code or message, the WoW version selected, the Battle.net account state, and the steps that have already been attempted. For example, say whether Locate the game was used, whether the order shows Complete, whether the BattleTag was verified, and whether the Battle.net Tools folder was rebuilt. This gives the support agent a usable distinction between an entitlement case and a local launcher failure.
A concise escalation checklist
- Record the full error code, including every letter and zero.
- Record whether the issue affects Modern WoW, WoW Classic Era, Cataclysm Classic, or more than one entry.
- State whether the account can sign in on Battle.net and whether a security check appears.
- For access messages, note the account used, order status, or code-redemption account.
- For download messages, note connection checks, security-software permissions, conflicting applications closed, and any Battle.net Tools reset.
Routing the case to the matching category and supplying this context is more effective than opening separate tickets that describe the same symptom as unrelated problems.
