When a World of Warcraft patch breaks your addons, restart the game, verify the addon folder and game flavor, then update the addon before trying anything destructive. If the addon is still marked out of date, use Load Out of Date Addons only as a short diagnostic test. A flavor mismatch, an extra folder layer, corrupted files, or an addon that has not yet been updated are the usual causes.
Why addons stop working after a patch
A patch can change the game interface that addons use. An addon built for an older interface may still open if the change was harmless, but it can also generate Lua errors, lose features, display a blank panel, or prevent another addon from loading correctly. The warning is therefore a compatibility signal, not proof that the files are useless.

Patch timing also matters. Authors release compatible files on different schedules. Some publish almost immediately; others need more time to test changes, and an abandoned addon may never receive a compatible release. If no compatible version exists, the reliable options are to wait for the author or use the default interface temporarily.

Use this repair order first
- Exit World of Warcraft completely. The game does not register addon changes until you exit and restart it.
- Check the installation path. Addon folders must be directly under
World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOnsfor the relevant game installation. - Check the game flavor. Retail, Classic, and Classic Era use different addon targets. Install the file for the version you actually launch.
- Update the addon. Use your addon manager’s Update or Update All control.
- Reinstall only when necessary. Do this for corrupt, mismatched, or deliberately modified files, and protect your settings first.
- Test the out-of-date checkbox briefly. It can start an unchanged addon, but it cannot make old code compatible with a changed API.
- Isolate the offending addon. Disable everything, restart, and re-enable addons in small groups or one at a time.
Restart after every change. Otherwise, you may be testing the old in-memory addon state rather than the files you just repaired.

Step 1: Exit the game and identify the correct installation
Close every WoW process
Leave the character-selection screen and close World of Warcraft. If the launcher remains open, that is fine, but the game itself must be stopped before you edit, update, delete, or reinstall addon files. Blizzard’s forum FAQ states that “WoW doesn’t register addon changes until you exit the game and restart it.”
Find the AddOns directory
The required location is:
World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOnsFor a modern installation, open the folder for the game instance you play and then follow that Interface/AddOns path. Retail, Classic, and Classic Era are separate targets; an addon copied into the wrong instance can appear to be missing even though the files exist on the drive.
Remove an extra extraction layer
Each addon folder must sit directly inside AddOns. A common failed extraction looks like this:

Interface/AddOns/SomeAddon/SomeAddon/The folder containing the addon’s manifest and files should instead be at the first level:
Interface/AddOns/SomeAddon/Move the inner folder up one level if an archive created that duplicate directory. Do not scatter individual Lua files directly into AddOns; retain the addon’s own folder structure.
Step 2: Confirm Retail, Classic, or Classic Era
Addon managers distinguish between game flavors. In CurseForge, select the profile for Retail, Classic, or Classic Era before searching, updating, or installing. A file for one flavor may trigger a “belongs to” warning in another and may not load at all.

Check the flavor twice: first in the launcher or game you intend to start, and again in the addon manager’s selected profile. If you switched between versions recently, the manager may still be pointed at the previous instance.
- Retail selected, Retail addon required: install the current Retail release.
- Classic selected, Classic addon required: use the Classic-compatible file.
- Classic Era selected, Classic Era addon required: use the Era-specific release.
After correcting the profile, reinstall or update the addon into that instance, then restart WoW and check the AddOns button at character select.
Step 3: Update before you reinstall
Run the manager’s update action
Open the addon manager, select the correct game flavor, and choose Update for the affected addon or Update All for the entire profile. Let the operation finish before launching the game. A major release can leave different addons at different compatibility levels, so updating only the addon named in an error may not be enough if it depends on a shared library that also changed.
Read the date and compatibility label carefully
An addon manager can show that a file is installed while still identifying it as out of date. “Out of date” means the installed file targets an older game interface. It may work if the patch did not affect the functions it uses, but compatibility is not assured.
Do not assume that repeatedly pressing Update will create a release that the author has not published. Authors update on their own schedules. If the manager reports that no compatible version is available, waiting is safer than replacing files with an unrelated build.

Before deleting anything, copy both of these folders to a safe location:

Interface/AddOns, which preserves your installed addon files.WTF, which stores saved variables and much of your addon configuration.
CurseForge specifically lists Addons and WTF backups as useful for restoration. A backup lets you recover profiles and settings if a clean reinstall does not solve the problem.
Use Update or Reinstall
Try the manager’s Update or Reinstall action first. If the local copy is damaged or no longer matches the server’s metadata, the manager may need to replace it rather than patch individual files.
Delete and install again when the manager cannot repair it
- Close World of Warcraft.
- Confirm that the manager is set to the intended Retail, Classic, or Classic Era instance.
- Remove the affected addon from that instance, retaining your backup.
- Install the current release again.
- Start WoW and verify the AddOns list and the affected feature.
A corrupt warning means the local file may not match the server metadata. Reinstalling is the appropriate response. A modified or working copy warning is different: automatic updating is intentionally skipped so local changes are not overwritten. If you edited the addon or are using a development copy, restore the official release or maintain the copy manually.

How to enable it
- Start World of Warcraft and reach the character-selection screen.
- Click AddOns.
- Enable Load Out of Date AddOns.
- Enter the affected character and test the specific feature that failed.
What the checkbox can and cannot do
The option tells the game to attempt loading an addon whose interface number is older than the current one. It does not update the files, translate removed functions, or repair a flavor mismatch. Treat it as a temporary compatibility experiment.
If the addon works and produces no errors, you may leave it enabled only while you decide whether to keep using that older release. If errors, missing panels, tainted actions, or broken layouts continue, disable the addon and wait for a compatible release. Running old code indefinitely can make later troubleshooting harder because several failures may accumulate.
Step 6: Isolate the addon causing the failure
Start from a clean test
- At character select, disable every addon.
- Restart the game.
- Reproduce the action that previously failed.
- If the default interface works, re-enable addons in small groups.
- Restart and reproduce the error after each group.
- When a group fails, disable all but one addon in that group and test each individually.
This is practical troubleshooting guidance rather than a claimed official Blizzard test procedure. It is effective because the first failing addon is easier to identify than a screen full of cascading errors.

Record the first Lua error
Write down the first error message, the addon named in it, and what you were doing when it appeared. Later errors may be consequences of the first failure. If an error names a shared library, test the addons that bundle or depend on that library as a group.

If the addon works on one character but not another, the files may be fine and the affected character’s saved variables may be damaged or incompatible. This is why backing up the WTF folder matters. Do not delete it as a first step; isolate the addon and preserve the backup before resetting character or account settings.
What each warning means

Common failure cases and fixes
The addon manager says it updated, but WoW still shows the old warning
Exit the game again, verify that the manager updated the same game instance you launch, and inspect the folder for duplicate extraction layers. A manager can update one flavor while WoW starts another. If the folder is correct, restart both the manager and the game before testing.
The addon disappeared after a patch
Check World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOns in the active installation, not just a similarly named Classic or Retail directory. Then confirm that each addon folder is directly inside AddOns. A patch does not make an addon visible when the files are stored one directory too deep.
Only one addon causes errors while the rest work
Disable that addon, restart, and reproduce the action. If the error disappears, leave it disabled until its author publishes a compatible version. Reinstalling a fundamentally incompatible addon will not solve an API change.
Several addons fail at once
Update all addons and their shared libraries, then use group isolation. A common library or a changed game API can make multiple addons report errors, while the first error identifies the most useful starting point.
The addon works with the checkbox but breaks the interface later
Turn off Load Out of Date AddOns, disable the offending addon, and test with the default UI. The checkbox bypassed the version warning; it did not make the addon current.
An update refuses to overwrite the files
Look for a modified or working copy label. Automatic exclusion is intentional. Keep a backup of your edited files, then install the official release separately if you need a clean compatibility test.
When waiting is the correct fix
If the folder, flavor, and installation are correct, the files are not corrupt, and no compatible release is available, there may be nothing local to repair. CurseForge support notes that some authors update almost immediately, while others take longer; if no compatible version is available, the choices are to wait for the author or attempt the current version with the understanding that it may not work as expected.
Use the default interface while waiting. Keep the affected addon disabled, retain your AddOns and WTF backup, and check the manager for a compatible release later. Do not download an unrelated file merely because its name looks similar.
A clean checklist for every future patch
- Close World of Warcraft fully.
- Back up

Bottom line
Most post-patch addon failures are fixed by putting the files in the correct Interface/AddOns folder, selecting the matching game flavor, updating, and restarting WoW. Reinstall after backing up when files are corrupt or mismatched. The out-of-date checkbox is a temporary test, not a repair; if the addon still throws errors and its author has not released a compatible version, disable it and use the default UI until an update arrives.
