How to Fix Windows Update: Safe Steps for Windows 11 and 10

Start with Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, then check power, internet, storage, and the exact error code before trying manual or recovery steps.

On Windows 11, start by running the Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. If updates still fail, check the exact error code, power and internet connection, administrator access, and available storage before trying manual repairs. Back up important files before troubleshooting or using recovery options.

Identify the Windows version and the exact problem

First check whether the PC runs Windows 11 or Windows 10, then note what happens: the update may not download, may fail during installation, or may appear stuck. Record the update name and any complete error code shown in Settings. A percentage that has not changed by itself does not identify the cause.

Microsoft’s instructions cover both versions, but Windows 11’s current first step is the Get Help troubleshooter. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting page has instructions for each version.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Windows 11

  1. Open the Get Help app and run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter. It checks for common problems and attempts repairs.
  2. If the automated tool does not resolve the issue, go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
  3. When the troubleshooter finishes, restart the PC, then go to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Windows 10

  1. Open Get Help and run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter.
  2. If the problem remains, go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
  3. Restart the PC and check for updates again.

These steps are the least disruptive place to begin. Microsoft’s current directions are in Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.

Check common blockers before manual repair

  • Back up important files. Do this before troubleshooting that changes system files or using recovery options.
  • Check power and internet. Keep a laptop connected to power and confirm the internet connection is stable. Microsoft says a stable connection is crucial for downloading and installing updates.
  • Use an administrator account. Some troubleshooting actions require administrator access.
  • Disconnect nonessential hardware. Temporarily remove external storage, docks, and other peripherals that are not needed.
  • Check free space, especially for a Windows upgrade. Microsoft’s guidance, checked October 7, 2026, says an upgrade requires at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system. Those figures apply to upgrades, not every routine update. Microsoft notes that a USB drive may be needed when the PC has a small internal drive.

See Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for the full set of basic checks.

Clear the Windows Update cache only if simpler steps fail

Microsoft notes that corrupted files in the update cache can cause errors. Clearing the cache is a manual step, so try the troubleshooter and basic checks first. Follow Microsoft’s instructions carefully and delete only the contents of the specified cache folder.

  5. Restart the PC and try Windows Update again.

Use the error code to choose what to check next

An error code is a clue, not a confirmed diagnosis. Microsoft associates these codes with possible causes; use the complete code and follow the linked error-specific guidance rather than assuming one cause is certain.

Code Possible lead to investigate
0x8007000d Update files or cache may be corrupted.
0x800705b4 The update may have taken too long or been interrupted.
0x800f0922 There may be insufficient disk space or a problem with .NET Framework or another component.
0xC1900101 An incompatible driver may be involved.
0x80070005 Access may have been denied or permissions may be insufficient.

Consult Microsoft’s Windows upgrade and installation error guidance for steps tied to the code. The associations narrow the search; they do not prove which fault your PC has.

Escalate to recovery options when the failure has a clear trigger

If a particular update caused the problem

If the issue began immediately after a specific update, uninstalling that update may help. Microsoft says uninstalling an update does not affect personal files and apps. Use Microsoft’s recovery options instructions to find the uninstall path for your Windows version.

If the problem began after a Windows version upgrade

Microsoft’s recovery guidance allows a return to the previous Windows version for 10 days after moving to a new version. Use this only if the timing fits; it is a time-limited rollback, not a general repair for every update problem.

Try Windows 11’s repair reinstall when available

On some Windows 11 PCs, go to Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update. This option downloads a repair version of the last successfully installed operating-system update to repair system files and components. It may not appear on older Windows 11 versions or on PCs managed by a work or school organization. See Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling the current Windows version.

Reserve reset or a full reinstall for last

Reset this PC and reinstalling Windows from installation media are more disruptive than a troubleshooter or targeted update rollback. The choices differ in what they keep: apps, settings, or files may be removed. Read the option-specific consequences for your Windows version and make a backup before proceeding, using Microsoft’s recovery options guide.
