A higher-category Ethernet cable does not automatically make your internet faster, and an older Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable may already handle more than 1 Gb/s. What matters is the whole link: its endpoints, length, condition, installation and the environment it runs through.
Myth 1: A higher-category cable automatically makes your internet faster
Ethernet cable category describes the performance a cabling system is designed to support; it does not upgrade your internet plan or make a router, switch or computer negotiate a faster link than its ports allow. A cable can be a bottleneck, but replacing one that already supports the connection will not, by itself, increase internet speed.

Fluke Networks lists Cat 5e for 1000BASE-T, Cat 6 for 10GBASE-T at a limited reach, and Cat 6A for 10GBASE-T up to 100 m. Those capabilities depend on more than the printing on the cable jacket: the connecting hardware, installation and test results are part of a standards-compliant installed link. See Fluke Networks’ cabling and troubleshooting guide.
Before buying cable, check the negotiated link rate and the port specifications on both ends. If your devices connect at 1 Gb/s, a cable upgrade will not create a 2.5 Gb/s connection unless the relevant network ports support it too.

Myth 2: Cat 5e or Cat 6 must be replaced for anything faster than 1 Gb/s
Not necessarily. The NBASE-T Alliance announced specifications for 2.5 and 5 Gb/s operation over existing Cat 5e and Cat 6 cabling for runs up to 100 m. That announcement describes the technology’s capability, not a guarantee that every existing cable installation will support those rates.
Fluke Networks cautions that not every Cat 5e installation supports NBASE-T and recommends certification when a deployment needs assurance; long cable bundles may also require assessment. Cisco likewise advises checking installation factors such as bundling and termination and testing the complete link for higher-speed operation. The practical sequence is to verify the ports at both ends, then assess the installed channel before replacing it.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
Cat 6’s 10 Gb/s reach is not a single universal figure. Fluke Networks’ category table lists 10GBASE-T over Cat 6 at 35 m. Cisco’s C9350 Series switch documentation says Cat 6 can reach up to 55 m, with actual reach dependent on factors including bundling and termination. Cisco lists Cat 6A for up to 100 m. These figures come from different sources and contexts; do not treat Cat 6 as a blanket 100 m 10 Gb/s solution. Consult the documentation for the actual equipment and installation.

In its August 30, 2016 announcement, the NBASE-T Alliance’s Marketing Work Group chair, LK Bhupathi, said the technology could use the installed base of Cat 5e and Cat 6 to enable speeds above 1 Gb/s without wholesale cable replacement. That is the alliance’s industry perspective, not an independent test result. Read the NBASE-T Alliance announcement.

Myth 3: If a long Ethernet cable works, its length is within spec
A link that comes up is not proof that the cable run complies with structured cabling standards. Cisco describes 100 m as the conventional maximum length for a four-pair copper Ethernet channel. Beyond that, the design may need fiber, an extender or a purpose-designed long-reach solution validated for the application. The right option depends on the required distance and equipment; do not assume an arbitrary longer copper run will be reliable.
Fluke Networks explains that an overlength cable may still support many LAN applications while failing structured cabling standards. In other words, “it works right now” and “it meets the standard” are different claims. See Fluke Networks’ explanation of cable propagation delay and overlength runs and Cisco’s CPwE Physical Infrastructure Design Guide.

- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
Myth 4: Shielded Ethernet cable is always better
Shielding is an environmental and installation choice, not a universal speed upgrade. Cisco notes that electrically noisy industrial environments may call for shielded cabling. For extreme electromagnetic interference, fiber can be useful because it is inherently immune to electrical noise. A typical home or small-office route does not need shielding simply because shielded cable sounds more advanced.
Choose a cabling approach for the actual route and conditions. Cisco’s C9350 Series hardware guide covers the switch’s cable-reach guidance and related installation factors. Where a link must be verified, use the appropriate certification process: a basic continuity check can show that conductors connect, but it does not establish that an installed channel meets a performance standard.

What to check before replacing Ethernet cable
- Endpoints: Confirm the speed supported by the router, switch and device ports at both ends.
- Installed link: Consider cable category, length, connectors, condition, bundling and termination—not just the jacket label.
- Required assurance: If a deployment needs proof of standards compliance or reliable higher-speed performance, arrange an appropriate link test or certification.
- Route conditions: For runs beyond the conventional 100 m copper channel limit or through areas with severe electrical noise, evaluate fiber or another validated design rather than relying on a cable that happens to link.
Cat 6A is a reasonable choice when a new copper run genuinely needs 10GBASE-T up to 100 m, as reflected in the cited Fluke and Cisco documentation. It is not a necessary purchase for every network: the equipment, run length and installation must make the capability useful.
