Windows Update error 0x800f0831 indicates a Windows Component Store servicing problem, not a failed hardware component. Start with Microsoft’s built-in DISM and System File Checker (SFC) repairs. If the update still fails, use the current CBS log to identify the missing package and its related KB rather than guessing which update to install.
What error 0x800f0831 means
Microsoft classifies 0x800f0831 as CBS_E_STORE_CORRUPTION, meaning the Component-Based Servicing (CBS) store is corrupted. A failed update may depend on a manifest from an earlier update package. That earlier package might never have been installed, or it might have been installed without being fully applied to the registry. Microsoft explains this dependency in its dedicated error guidance and lists the code in its Windows Update error reference.

The code alone does not identify the specific missing package. The Windows version, system architecture, failed update, and servicing log determine what package recovery—if any—is appropriate.

Run DISM before SFC from an elevated Command Prompt. DISM repairs the Windows image; SFC then checks and repairs protected system files. Microsoft recommends these tools and a restart for this error.

- Open an elevated Command Prompt. Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Repair the Windows image. Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand press Enter. Wait for the command to finish; it can take several minutes. - Check system files. Enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. Leave the window open until verification reaches 100% and reports a result. Microsoft’s instructions for using System File Checker explain the scan. - Restart and retry Windows Update. After Windows restarts, try installing the same failed update again.
If it still fails, find the missing package in CBS.log
When the first repair sequence does not resolve the error, check the servicing log before trying a specific update package. Retry the failed installation once so the log includes the latest failure, then open C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Search for 0x800f0831, manifest missing, Failed to resolve package, or Store corruption.
Look for the missing manifest and the associated unresolved package identity. The package details and KB number, when shown, are clues for selecting a repair—not a reason to install a similarly named update from an unrelated online post. Use the exact package only when the log points to one
If CBS.log identifies a missing package or related KB, search that KB in the Microsoft Update Catalog. Choose the package that matches the affected Windows version and system architecture. A KB number by itself is not enough to confirm that a download is right for the machine.

If DISM cannot find repair files
DISM normally gets the files it needs through Windows Update. If that source is unavailable or broken, Microsoft documents using a compatible Windows installation source, such as a repair folder on removable media or a network share. The source must correspond appropriately to the Windows installation being repaired; use Microsoft’s instructions for repair sources to determine the correct syntax and source. This is a conditional option, not a routine first step.
Choose the repair path based on what you know

Microsoft’s dedicated guidance also distinguishes recovery by environment: it recommends an in-place upgrade for Azure virtual machines, while its documented approach for physical and non-Azure systems involves removing and reinstalling the affected update. Those are not interchangeable instructions; use the guidance that matches the machine.

When to stop and get system-specific help
If DISM and SFC do not resolve the failure and CBS.log does not make the missing package clear, avoid installing packages by guesswork. The appropriate next step depends on the Windows edition and version, architecture, failed KB, and log entries. Preserve the relevant CBS.log details and use Microsoft’s environment-specific recovery guidance or seek help from someone qualified to diagnose Windows servicing issues.
