The right choice depends on what you photograph, whether you prefer FX or DX, which F-mount lenses you own, and the condition of the body you can find. Nikon’s official lineup pages still list several DSLR models, but listings and stock vary by market and date.
Which Nikon DSLR should you buy?
Start with the job, not an all-time leaderboard. The D850 is a defensible all-round pick: Nikon includes it among its current US DSLR offerings, and Digital Camera World’s guide, updated 15 June 2026, calls it the finest DSLR in its Nikon roundup. That is one editorial assessment, not a universal consensus or a lab ranking. Digital Camera World’s Nikon DSLR guide

What Nikon’s current listings do—and do not—tell you
As of 7 October 2026, Nikon’s global lineup page lists the D6, D850, D780, D500, and D7500. Nikon USA’s shopping page shows the D850, D780, and D7500, while separately identifying archived DSLR models. These are page listings, not a guarantee of future stock or availability in every country. Confirm the exact model and local availability before buying. Nikon DSLR lineup and US listings

Compare DSLRs by the work you need them to do
Subjects and shooting style
- Sports and wildlife: Compare autofocus capabilities, continuous shooting rate, and buffer performance. Check the conditions behind any independently measured buffer or frame-rate result.
- Landscapes and detail: Consider sensor format and resolution alongside lens choice and the detail you need. More megapixels alone do not make a camera the right fit.
- Portraits and events: Look at autofocus behavior, lens compatibility, handling, and how the body suits your working pace.
- Travel and everyday photography: Body size, weight, controls, and lens combinations may matter more than a specialist feature.
- Video or live view: Check resolution and frame rates, autofocus mode, screen movement, and recording constraints for the specific model.
FX, DX, and F-mount lenses
FX and DX describe Nikon sensor formats. They affect framing and lens angle of view, but DX should not be treated as an automatic image-quality advantage. Nikon’s D7500 documentation, for example, specifies a DX sensor and says its angle of view with an FX-format lens is approximately equivalent to 1.5× the FX-format angle of view. That is a framing relationship, not a measure of image quality. Nikon D7500 specifications
If you already own Nikon F-mount lenses, verify compatibility with the particular body and lens combination rather than assuming every feature works identically. Nikon identifies the D7500 as an F-mount camera; its specifications are a useful example of checking the manufacturer’s model-specific documentation.
Handling, video, and ownership condition
Compare body dimensions and weight, control layout, viewfinder and screen design, weather-sealing claims, battery and storage requirements, and the repair or service options available where you live. A ruggedness description does not establish how long a specific used body will remain reliable.

For a used camera, inspect condition and included accessories, ask about service history where available, and confirm the seller’s return terms. Check whether the listing is body-only or includes a lens, and verify the exact model, condition, warranty, and seller before payment. New and used stock can differ by market.
What the D7500 specifications illustrate
The D7500 is a useful example of how to compare a DSLR using concrete manufacturer specifications rather than broad superlatives. Nikon’s US specifications list:
- 20.9 million effective pixels and a 23.5 × 15.6 mm DX sensor.
- Nikon F mount and SD, SDHC, or SDXC storage.
- ISO 100–51,200.
- 4K UHD recording options up to 30 frames per second.
- A tilting, touch-sensitive 3.2-inch monitor.
- An approximately 1.5× DX-format angle-of-view equivalence with FX-format lenses.
These are model specifications, not evidence that the D7500 is better than another DSLR or will last a particular length of time. Check Nikon’s specification table for the exact configuration and recording mode relevant to your use. Nikon D7500 specifications

In its 12 April 2017 launch release, Nikon said the D7500 shares the D500’s 20.9-megapixel sensor and EXPEED 5 processor. Nikon also stated up to 8 frames per second with full AF/AE, a 51-point autofocus system, 4K UHD video, and a CIPA-standard rating of approximately 950 shots per charge. The available evidence does not establish a published Nikon DSLR service-life figure, a reliability ranking, or a universal shutter-count threshold. Do not treat a weather-sealing or ruggedness claim as a promise of years of use. For a used body, condition, prior use, maintenance, and access to repair support are practical considerations, but they do not allow a reliable lifespan prediction for an individual camera.
Quick Recap
A practical shortlist before you buy
- Choose your main use: action, wildlife, landscape, portraits, events, travel, or video.
- Check the system fit: identify your existing Nikon F-mount lenses and verify compatibility with the candidate body.
- Compare model-specific evidence: review official specifications for sensor format, autofocus, shooting rate, video, screen, storage, and battery requirements.
- Confirm the actual offer: check availability in your market, new or used condition, body or bundle contents, seller, warranty, and return terms.
- Choose for fit, not an unsupported ranking: an all-time “best 12” list is not established by the available model documentation.
