Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Windows Search is slow, blank, or missing files, first check what it is searching and whether the relevant folders have finished indexing. In Windows 11, you can review indexed locations and status in Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. If those checks do not help, run Microsoft’s built-in Search and Indexing troubleshooter. The right fix depends on whether the problem is limited to a folder search, taskbar Search, or Outlook.
Start by checking what you searched
Search behaves differently depending on whether you are looking for an app, a filename, words inside a document, or an Outlook message. For files, test the search in File Explorer before changing indexing settings:

- Open the folder where you expect the file to be and search there.
- If you need to search more broadly, choose This PC in File Explorer and try again. Microsoft says this broader search is slower but more in-depth.
If the file appears in its folder but not in the original search, the original search may have been limited to a narrower location. Microsoft’s guide to finding files and apps in Windows describes these search options.
Check whether the folder is included in the index
Windows Search uses an index—a catalog of filenames, paths, properties and, for files containing text, their contents—so it can find matches without examining every file one by one. If a location is not indexed, or its index is still being built, results can be incomplete or slow.

In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows and review Find my files:
- Classic indexes Documents, Pictures, Music and Desktop by default. You can add other locations when needed.
- Enhanced indexes user folders and files across the PC. It offers broader coverage and may use more system resources.
Choose the narrower coverage if it includes the places you search; broaden it only when you need results from additional locations. Microsoft explains the modes and indexed locations in Search indexing in Windows.
Give a new or changed index time to finish
On the Searching Windows settings page, check the indexing status. After initial setup or a significant change to indexed locations, Microsoft says the first indexing pass can take up to a couple of hours. That is an expectation, not a guarantee for every PC, so incomplete results may persist while indexing is underway.

- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
For Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft recommends plugging in the device during initial indexing; semantic indexing is enabled by default on those PCs. Microsoft also uses music searches to illustrate the potential benefit of a completed index: its example says a search for “Beethoven” can return matching music in a fraction of a second, compared with minutes without an index. That is an illustration, not a performance promise for every computer.
Run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter
If the expected locations are included and indexing has had time to complete, run Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooter:
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
- Select Advanced indexing options.
- Select Advanced.
- Under Index Settings, select Troubleshoot search and indexing, then follow the wizard.
Labels and navigation can differ by Windows version. Microsoft also documents a Control Panel route in its article about finding files after upgrading Windows.

Check the Windows Search service only for Outlook search problems
If Outlook reports that desktop search is unavailable, check whether the Windows Search service is running. Microsoft’s service guidance is specifically for Outlook search availability; it is not a universal remedy for blank or irrelevant taskbar results.

- Open Services and locate Windows Search.
- Check that the service status is Running.
- Confirm its startup type is not Disabled. Microsoft lists Automatic and Automatic (Delayed Start) as appropriate options.
See Microsoft’s Outlook desktop search service guidance for the Outlook-specific steps.
If taskbar Search remains blank
Microsoft’s guidance covers index settings and the Search and Indexing troubleshooter, but it does not establish one fix for every blank taskbar-search interface. Try the supported checks above; if the interface remains blank, contact Microsoft Support or your organization’s IT support rather than applying speculative registry edits or third-party repair utilities.
If you are still using Windows 10, note that Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 no longer receives normal free security updates and technical assistance under standard support; see Microsoft’s Windows search and support information.
