When Windows cannot update, start with Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, restart the PC, and check again. Then verify internet access, power, administrator permissions, automatic date and time, free storage, and disconnected external hardware. If the failure continues, rebuild the Windows Update cache and match the displayed error code to a targeted repair. Back up personal files and record your BitLocker recovery key before making deeper changes or resetting Windows.
Before you change Windows Update
Most update repairs are reversible, but a reset or reinstall can remove applications, settings, or personal data. Prepare the computer before troubleshooting.

- Back up personal files. Copy important documents, photos, and other data to OneDrive, a USB drive, or another storage location.
- Record your BitLocker recovery key. Keep it available before recovery operations, firmware changes, or a reset.
- Use an administrator account. Several service, repair, and system-file steps require elevation.
- Save open work and connect AC power. A shutdown during installation can leave Windows in a recovery state.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter first
The built-in troubleshooter checks common update components and applies supported corrections. Run the version that matches your Windows edition.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Allow the checks and repairs to finish, then restart the PC.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.
- Restart when prompted, then return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If the troubleshooter reports that it could not identify a problem, continue with the basic checks instead of repeatedly running it.

Check the conditions that can block an update
Internet connection and power
Use a stable connection rather than a marginal Wi-Fi signal. If possible, try Ethernet or move closer to the access point. Pause large downloads, VPN connections, and bandwidth-heavy activity while Windows downloads the update. Keep the laptop connected to its charger and avoid closing the lid during installation.
Administrator access
Sign in with an account that has administrator rights. If the computer belongs to an employer or school, update policies may be controlled by that organization; contact its administrator rather than changing policy settings yourself.
Date, time, and time zone
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically when those options are available.
- Select Sync now, then retry Windows Update.
An incorrect clock can interfere with secure connections and update-service authentication.
Remove unnecessary hardware
Shut down the PC and disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, external drives, printers, and card readers. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection attached. Reconnect devices after the update succeeds. During a feature upgrade, an incompatible peripheral or its driver can interrupt setup.

Make enough storage available
Microsoft’s current guidance specifies at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit operating system and 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system. A feature upgrade may need more working space temporarily, so treat those figures as a minimum rather than a target.
| Windows installation | Minimum free space stated by Microsoft | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 32-bit | 16 GB | Free space on the system drive, then restart and check again. |
| 64-bit | 20 GB | Free space on the system drive; remove or move large files before retrying. |
Check storage in Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11 or Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10. Empty the Recycle Bin, remove temporary files through Storage settings, and uninstall applications you no longer need. Do not delete files manually from C:Windows or other system folders.
If the internal drive is too small, Windows may allow a USB flash drive or other external storage to provide working space for the upgrade. Use the drive only for that purpose and keep a backup elsewhere; external storage supplies capacity but does not repair Windows components or an update database.
Understand a progress percentage that appears stuck
| Displayed progress | Recommended response |
|---|---|
| 0% | Confirm the internet connection, power, storage, and Windows Update service. Restart, run the troubleshooter, and check again. |
| 51–99% | Allow additional time. Download and installation duration varies with connection speed, network settings, and update size. If the number remains unchanged for an unusually long period, restart and run the troubleshooter. |
| 100% | Restart if Windows requests it, then check Windows Update again. If installation rolls back, note the error code before trying another repair. |
A percentage is not a reliable clock: Windows may pause while verifying packages, servicing drivers, or performing a reboot stage. Avoid forcing power off while the screen explicitly says not to turn off the computer. If the machine is completely unresponsive and shows no disk activity for an extended period, hold the power button only as a last resort and be prepared for recovery checks at the next startup.

Match the error code to a focused fix
Write down the complete code shown in Windows Update history. The code narrows the likely cause, but it is not a diagnosis by itself. Apply the relevant remedy instead of running every repair command indiscriminately.
| Error code | Likely area | First actions |
|---|---|---|

Rebuild the Windows Update cache
The SoftwareDistribution folder stores temporary update downloads and database information. Damaged or stale contents can prevent a new package from installing. Rebuilding the cache removes those temporary files; Windows recreates the folder contents the next time it checks for updates.
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, find Windows Update.
- Right-click it and select Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the files and folders inside SoftwareDistribution. Do not delete the Windows folder itself.
- Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart the PC, open Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update is stopped. A third-party security product or another servicing process can also hold a file open; restart and try the sequence again rather than deleting system files forcefully.

Repair Windows system files and servicing components
Microsoft’s upgrade-error guidance includes System File Checker (SFC), Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM), service checks, temporary-file cleanup, clean boot, selected Safe Mode cases, and security-software or network checks. Use these steps when the error points to corruption or when cache rebuilding does not help.

Run DISM and SFC from an elevated terminal
- Open Start, search for Terminal or Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to complete. The process can pause at a percentage while it evaluates the component store. - Run
sfc /scannowand wait until verification reaches 100 percent. - Restart Windows and check for updates.
Do not close the terminal while either scan is running. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the command once more after DISM has completed; persistent corruption may require the reset or reinstall options described below.
Check services and security software
Open services.msc and confirm that Windows Update is not disabled. A security product can block or delay update traffic, producing timeout or access-denied errors. Temporarily pause only the relevant network or inspection feature if your security policy permits it, then restore protection immediately after testing. Windows Update troubleshooting does not replace antivirus protection.
Try a clean boot when software conflicts are suspected
A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of third-party services and startup programs. Use Microsoft’s System Configuration tool (msconfig) to hide Microsoft services, disable the remaining non-Microsoft services, and disable startup items in Task Manager. Restart and retry the update. If it succeeds, re-enable items in groups to identify the conflict, then return the system to normal startup. Do not disable Microsoft services indiscriminately.
Handle driver and hardware-related failures
The 0xC1900101 family commonly indicates a driver conflict during an upgrade. Open Device Manager, look for warning icons, and update or remove the device identified in the rollback message. Pay particular attention to storage, display, network, chipset, audio, and security-filter drivers. Disconnect unnecessary USB hardware and docks while upgrading. If removing a device driver makes the system unstable, restart in Safe Mode and use Device Manager or System Restore to undo the change.

Do not install random driver packages from unofficial download sites. Use the device maker’s official package or Windows’ own driver channel, and create a restore point when available before replacing a critical driver.
When permissions, paths, or the update database are involved
Access-denied codes such as 0x80070005 require an administrator context and may reflect organization policy or security software. Database-related code 0x80248014 points toward the Windows Update service or its stored database, so stopping the service and rebuilding SoftwareDistribution is the appropriate first repair. Codes 0x80070002 and 0x80070003 can involve missing paths or incomplete downloads; check storage, restart, and rerun the troubleshooter before attempting deeper servicing changes.
If a work or school device repeatedly restores a policy or fails only under a managed account, the organization’s update server may be controlling the process. The local troubleshooting steps cannot override that policy; the administrator must review the deployment.

Reset or reinstall Windows only as a last resort
Use recovery only after backing up files, recording the BitLocker recovery key, and understanding the application impact. Open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, then choose Reset this PC.
| Choice | What it does | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Keep my files | Reinstalls Windows while preserving personal files. | Removes installed applications and resets settings; reinstall programs afterward. |
| Remove everything | Reinstalls Windows and deletes personal files, applications, and settings. | Use only after a verified backup; it is suitable when you want a clean start or are disposing of the PC. |
| Cloud download | Downloads a fresh Windows copy. | Requires a reliable internet connection and sufficient data allowance. |
| Local reinstall | Uses installation files already on the device. | Can be useful without a large download, but damaged local files may limit the repair. |
During a reset, the screen can remain black for an extended period. Keep the computer connected to power and do not interrupt it unless Windows explicitly reports failure. If reset cannot complete, use Windows recovery media or qualified technical support rather than repeatedly forcing shutdowns.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025
Microsoft states that after October 14, 2025, Windows 10 no longer receives free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes. Windows 10 PCs continue to run, but the absence of free support changes what “not able to update” means: some systems are failing because of a local problem, while others are simply beyond the normal support boundary.
Check whether the computer meets Windows 11 requirements and plan a move to Windows 11 or another supported path. Do not assume that repeatedly clearing the cache can restore updates that Microsoft no longer provides for the edition and support channel installed on the device.
