Error 0x80070032 is not one single Windows failure. It appears in Windows Update, Insider builds, ETW diagnostics, Microsoft Store packages and Configuration Manager deployments, so the correct fix depends on where it appears. Start with the general Windows Update procedure below, then follow the branch matching the app, setup screen or deployment that produced the message.
What error 0x80070032 means
Windows reports 0x80070032 from more than one subsystem. The same hexadecimal code can accompany an update download, an installation or feature upgrade, an Insider Preview build, an Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) operation, a Store/AppX package, or a Configuration Manager task sequence. Consequently, there is no universal command that repairs every occurrence.

The exact wording around the code is more useful than the number by itself. Record the screen or application that showed it, the Windows edition and build, the update or package name, and the time of failure. That information determines which logs and repair steps are relevant.
| Where the code appears | Most relevant first checks | Distinctive remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update or a feature upgrade | Free space, network, Update troubleshooter, update services and component integrity | Reset the update cache, then run SFC and DISM if needed |
| Windows Insider Preview | Build details, update logs and available storage | Treat low-space reports as case-specific; verify before changing channels |
| ETW trace processing | Trace-processing component and its version | Use Microsoft.Windows.EventTracing.Processing.Toolkit 1.11.0 or later |
| Configuration Manager task sequence | WinPE network connection and boot-image drivers | Use Ethernet or add the correct network driver to the WinPE image |
| Microsoft Store or an AppX package | Store cache, the affected app and package-specific logs | Repair or reset Store apps instead of deleting Windows Update caches |
Before changing anything
Capture the failure
- Note the complete message, not only
0x80070032. - Write down whether the failure happened while downloading, installing, restarting or launching an app.
- Record the Windows version and build by pressing
Win + R, enteringwinver, and pressing Enter. - For an update, copy its name or KB number. For the Store, note the app and package name.
- If this is a managed work or school computer, ask the administrator before resetting services or changing deployment settings.
Protect work and obtain administrator access
Save open files and connect the computer to reliable power. Most service, SFC and DISM operations require an administrator account. If the device contains important data, maintain a current backup before attempting a feature upgrade or an in-place repair.

General Windows Update and upgrade fixes
1. Restart and retry
Choose Start > Power > Restart, sign in, wait for startup tasks to finish, and try the update again. A restart can release a locked servicing file or complete a pending reboot that is preventing the next operation.
2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and run the troubleshooter. Windows may instead offer the same workflow through the Get Help app.
Apply any suggested repair, restart if prompted, and test the update once. The troubleshooter can correct service and configuration problems, but it cannot fix every damaged component store or third-party conflict.

3. Verify the connection and storage
- Use a stable connection; temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy if your organization permits it, and retry on a known-good network when possible.
- Open Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10) and check the system drive.
- Microsoft’s current upgrade guidance says a device needs at least 16 GB of free space for a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system. These are minimum requirements, not a guarantee that a particular update will install.
- Empty the Recycle Bin and remove or move large personal files only after confirming you have a backup. Do not delete arbitrary files from
C:Windows.
4. Clear the Windows Update download cache
A damaged or incomplete download in the update cache can cause repeated failures. This procedure removes cached update files, not your personal documents.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Stop the services that may hold update files by running these commands one at a time:
net stop wuauserv net stop bits net stop cryptsvc - Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. Delete the contents of that folder, but leave the folder itself in place. If a file is locked, confirm that the related service stopped and restart the computer before trying again. - Return to the elevated terminal and start the services:
net start cryptsvc net start bits net start wuauserv - Restart Windows and check for updates again.
If Windows reports that a service was not running, that is not necessarily an error; continue with the cache step and restart commands. Do not remove the entire C:Windows directory or unrelated service data.

5. Check protected system files with SFC
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin).
- Run
sfc /scannowand wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Closing the window early can leave the scan incomplete. - Restart when SFC requests it, then retry Windows Update.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or could not repair some files. The last result indicates that the component store may need DISM rather than repeated SFC scans.
6. Repair the component store with DISM
In an elevated terminal, run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
DISM can take considerable time and may appear to pause at a percentage. Keep the computer powered on and connected to the network. When it completes, run sfc /scannow again, restart, and test the update. If DISM itself returns another error, record that code; it is a separate diagnostic lead rather than proof that 0x80070032 has a single cause.
7. Remove interference from peripherals and startup software
Disconnect nonessential USB storage, docks, printers, cameras and other peripherals. Leave the keyboard, mouse and display connected, restart, and retry. A device driver or filter can block servicing even when the update files are valid.
If the failure persists, perform a clean boot to isolate third-party startup software:
- Press
Win + R, typemsconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable enabled third-party startup items.
- Restart and test the update.
- After testing, return to
msconfigand Task Manager and restore normal startup. Leaving services disabled can prevent security, backup or hardware software from working.
Do not permanently disable antivirus or endpoint protection. If security software is suspected, use its documented temporary troubleshooting mode or ask the administrator for an approved test.

When 0x80070032 appears in Windows Insider or feature-build updates
Community reports have associated this code with Insider Preview updates and, in at least one case, insufficient disk space. That is a report about a particular installation, not a universal explanation. Check storage using the requirements above, inspect Settings > Windows Update > Update history, and record the build number before changing Insider settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf ordinary updates work but a preview build repeatedly fails, pause the preview installation, complete the cache, SFC and DISM checks, and review the update logs. Do not switch channels solely because the hexadecimal code appears; channel changes can affect which builds the device receives and may not undo a failed installation.
When the error is an ETW trace-processing failure
Microsoft documents a separate ETW diagnostic failure using 0x80070032. This branch applies only when a performance or Event Tracing for Windows workflow identifies trace processing as the failing component. The documented requirement is Microsoft.Windows.EventTracing.Processing.Toolkit version 1.11.0 or later.
- Confirm that the message names ETW or trace processing rather than Windows Update.
- Check the installed toolkit version in the tool’s package or installation details.
- Install or update the toolkit to version 1.11.0 or later using your organization’s approved package source.
- Re-run the trace operation and retain the new timestamp and log if it fails again.
Installing this toolkit will not repair an unrelated Store, update or deployment error that happens to use the same code.

In Microsoft Configuration Manager, the message “Failed to run task sequence 0x80070032” is documented for a deployment scenario involving network communication. The relevant environment is usually Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE), before the full operating system and its normal network drivers load.

Check the physical and logical connection
- Prefer a wired Ethernet connection during the task sequence. Wi-Fi support in WinPE depends on the image and device and may not be available.
- Check the cable, switch port and network access control with the deployment administrator.
- Confirm that the device receives an IP address in WinPE and can reach the required distribution point.
Check the boot image driver set
Ask the Configuration Manager administrator to add the exact network adapter driver required by the model to the WinPE boot image, distribute the updated image to distribution points, and test again. A driver that works in the installed Windows environment may still be absent from WinPE. Do not inject random driver packages; use the model-specific package approved for the deployment.
When Microsoft Store or an AppX package shows the code
Store and AppX failures use a different cache and package system from Windows Update. Repeating the SoftwareDistribution procedure alone is unlikely to address a package-specific problem.
Reset the Store cache
- Press
Win + R. - Enter
wsreset.exeand press Enter. - Wait for the blank command window to close and Microsoft Store to open, then retry the download or update.
Repair or reset the affected app
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select Microsoft Store or the named app, open Advanced options, and choose Repair.
- Retry the operation. If it still fails, return to the same screen and choose Reset. Resetting can remove that app’s local data and sign-in state.
If only one package fails, capture its name, publisher and timestamp and use the package’s deployment or event logs. If several Store apps fail, check Windows Update, account sign-in and organizational policies before removing packages or changing permissions.
Find evidence when the basic fixes fail
Read the servicing log
For update and component-servicing failures, open C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Search around the timestamp of the failure for entries containing the error code, the update package name or “failed.” Matching the log time to the on-screen event helps distinguish the triggering operation from older errors. Copy relevant lines to a text file rather than editing the CBS log.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCompare the failure conditions
- Does it fail during download, reboot, installation or app launch?
- Is the update cache service running after the reset?
- Does the device meet the available-space requirement?
- Did SFC or DISM report corruption?
- Is a driver, VPN, endpoint filter or startup utility active?
- Is the computer managed by Configuration Manager or enrolled in Insider builds?
These comparisons are more actionable than treating every appearance of 0x80070032 as the same defect.
When to stop troubleshooting and use recovery
Escalate with the captured message, Windows build, update or package name, CBS log timestamp and results of SFC and DISM when the error returns after a clean restart and the component-specific branch. On a managed device, provide the details to the deployment or IT team rather than changing WinPE images, update policies or security settings yourself.
For a personal PC, Windows recovery options may be appropriate only after backing up data and confirming that the failure is not a network, storage, driver or package issue. An in-place repair or reset changes more of the system than the targeted procedures above, so it should be treated as a later recovery step, not the first response to an unfamiliar hexadecimal code.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, tune settings that affect CPU, RAM and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and include tools such as real-time boost, file shredder and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary because no tool repairs every crash.
