If Windows 11 starts after an update, first check Update history and try Microsoft’s built-in “Fix problems using Windows Update” repair when it is available. If a particular update appears to have triggered the problem, uninstalling it may help. If Windows will not start, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Back up important files before disruptive recovery, and do not assume the update caused a fault based on timing alone.
Before changing anything, check what happened
- Note the symptom. Record any stop code or error message and whether Windows starts normally, starts intermittently, or does not reach the sign-in screen.
- Check the update history. In Windows, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note what installed and when. A problem beginning around the same time does not prove the update caused it; unexpected restarts and stop codes can also result from hardware, drivers, or software. See Microsoft’s stop-code and unexpected restart guidance.
- Protect important files. Back up files before trying recovery options that might remove data or roll back changes. If Windows is managed by your workplace or school, check with IT before attempting recovery.
If Windows starts: try the repair reinstall first
For general Windows or update-related problems, check whether Windows offers Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update. Select Reinstall now if it appears. Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version to repair system files and components while keeping personal files, apps, and settings. Keep the device connected to power and the internet during the repair. The setting may be unavailable on older configurations or on devices managed by work or school. Read Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling the current Windows version.

If one update appears to be the cause: uninstall it
If the issue clearly began after a specific installed update and the repair reinstall is unavailable or has not helped, remove the likely update from Windows:
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates.
- Find the update that matches the timing of the problem, select Uninstall, and follow the prompts.
- Restart the PC and check whether the original problem remains.
Some updates cannot be uninstalled. Removing a security update can leave the PC without the protection it supplied, so weigh that risk and reinstall the update when a suitable fix is available. Microsoft recommends trying the repair reinstall first on Windows 11. See Microsoft’s Windows Update uninstall instructions and its Windows Update FAQ.

If Windows will not start: use Windows Recovery Environment
WinRE provides recovery tools when you cannot open Settings. If the recovery screen does not appear automatically, Microsoft describes ways to enter Windows Recovery Environment in its Windows recovery options guide. Once in WinRE, try removing a recent update:
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Choose the applicable uninstall option shown, then follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows and see whether it starts normally.
Most WinRE recovery options on a BitLocker-protected device require the BitLocker recovery key. If uninstalling the update does not resolve the problem, consider another recovery option only after checking its data impact:

- System Restore can roll back system changes to a restore point; it is different from simply uninstalling one update.
- Reset this PC and Windows reinstallation have different effects depending on the option selected; they can remove apps, settings, or personal files. Review Microsoft’s explanation before proceeding.
For a managed work or school PC, contact your IT department if recovery options fail. Microsoft’s recovery options guide explains the available routes and their consequences.

| Option | Must Windows start? | What it changes | Key requirements or trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fix problems using Windows Update | Yes; open Settings | Reinstalls the current Windows version and repairs system files and components; keeps files, apps, and settings. | Internet and power connection; option may be unavailable on some older or managed installations. |
| Uninstall an update in Settings | Yes | Removes a selected installed update and its changes; personal files, apps, and settings are kept. | Some updates cannot be removed. Uninstalling a security update can remove its protection. |
| Uninstall Updates in WinRE | No | Removes a recent update through recovery tools. | Requires access to WinRE; most WinRE recovery options on BitLocker-protected devices require the recovery key. |
| System Restore, reset, or reinstall | Not always; some options are available through WinRE | Rolls back or replaces more of the system than removing one update; effects on apps, settings, and personal files depend on the option. | Review the specific option and back up important files first. If Windows system files may be damaged
When Windows starts but system-file corruption is suspected, Microsoft documents running DISM and then System File Checker from an administrator Command Prompt. These are built-in repair tools, not a guaranteed fix for every update-related problem.

If the PC remains unstable, displays a stop code, or cannot reach recovery options, seek help from Microsoft or the device manufacturer using the exact error and device model. Work or school devices should go to the organization’s IT team.

You can create a Windows USB recovery drive in advance for a future startup problem. It is preparation, not a fix for a PC that is already failing, and creating the drive erases the USB drive’s existing contents. Microsoft explains this and other recovery choices in its recovery options guide. For general stop-code troubleshooting, Microsoft says keeping about 10% to 15% of disk space free is a good idea depending on system configuration; that is general guidance, not a threshold specific to update failures. See its unexpected restart and stop-code guidance.
