Then test the Fortnite route, try low-cost fixes such as Ethernet and pausing uploads, and escalate with the results if the problem persists. A faster download plan or a good-looking speed test alone cannot tell you whether the route to a match is stable.
Identify the connection problem before changing settings
Ping, or latency, is the round-trip time for data to travel between your device and a Fortnite server, measured in milliseconds. Lower is generally better, but a test against a different server—or at a different time—may not match your experience in a match. Epic says performance can be affected by congestion, routing, and the matchmaking subregion used for a match. A sudden rise in ping may involve the ISP route, not just equipment in your home.

Separate the symptoms as you troubleshoot: consistently high ping suggests a slow or indirect route; packet loss means some data does not arrive; and lag spikes that occur when someone is streaming or uploading may point to congestion under load. Record the in-game ping and compare it with a network test taken under similar conditions. An idle test may miss a problem that appears only while the connection is busy.
Test an Epic endpoint
Epic Games Support lists endpoints for Fortnite subregions and diagnostic commands for Windows 11 and macOS. Use the endpoint for the region you want to investigate; the Virginia endpoint below is only an example, not a universal target. Epic says the command sends 50 packets and reports average latency:

Read average ping alongside packet loss and jitter. Epic Games Support’s troubleshooting guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, says packet loss should be 0% and that consistently more than about 1% can cause in-game problems. This is Epic’s troubleshooting guideline, not a universal threshold. Epic also advises keeping jitter low and comparing minimum and maximum latency. Run the test both when the connection is quiet and while the usual competing activity is happening.
These commands use ICMP, while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP. Epic notes that some networks deprioritize ICMP, so a clean result does not conclusively rule out a problem on the gameplay route.

Try the simplest home-network fixes first
- Restart the modem and router. A restart is a reversible first step before changing router settings.
- Try Ethernet if you currently use Wi-Fi. Connect the gaming device to the router with a cable, if both have compatible ports, then compare in-game ping and stability. A cable is useful as a test as well as a possible long-term connection; it cannot fix ISP routing or a game-server issue. If a PC lacks an Ethernet port, Microsoft says a USB-to-Ethernet adapter may be an option. Check compatibility before buying an adapter.
- Pause heavy competing traffic. Stop large downloads, uploads, and video streams while playing, then check whether spikes improve. Epic specifically flags uploads as disruptive because many home connections have less upload capacity than download capacity.
- Improve the router’s placement. Put it in an open, less obstructed location rather than a closet, basement, or blocked space.
- Check for router firmware updates. Install an update only if one is available for your router and appropriate to its instructions.
- If Ethernet is impractical, compare Wi-Fi bands in the room where you play. Epic describes 2.4 GHz as longer-range but potentially more crowded, while 5 GHz can be faster but has shorter range. Test both where the device is used; distance and interference can outweigh the theoretical advantage of either band.
- Test QoS or a gaming mode if your router offers one. Consult the router manual for Quality of Service (QoS), Smart Queue, or Gaming Mode settings. Epic says these can prioritize Fortnite traffic over large transfers and may steady ping on a busy network. Router implementations differ, and prioritization may not help when the network is already quiet.
Adjust Fortnite’s subregion preference carefully
In Fortnite, open Settings > Game > Language and Region and set Subregion Preference to the preferred subregion. Epic says this makes it more likely that you will be placed there; it does not guarantee every match will use one fixed data center. Epic balances subregion selection against queue times and fairness, and warns that preferring a subregion may increase queue times and reduce match quality.

For PC players, Epic recommends pre-downloading High Resolution Textures through the Fortnite options in the Epic Games Launcher. This is a PC-specific suggestion, not a general internet-speed upgrade or a fix for a bad route, Wi-Fi interference, or packet loss.

Escalate with useful evidence
If home-network checks do not resolve high ping or packet loss, give your ISP the endpoint you tested, the test result, and your in-game ping. Explain that the diagnostic uses ICMP while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP. A normal ICMP result alone does not clear the route because some networks treat that traffic differently.
For a PC that cannot connect over Ethernet, Microsoft’s Windows connectivity guidance recommends checking that the cable is seated and connected to the correct router port, trying another cable, restarting the modem and router, and testing another device. Those comparisons can help isolate whether the cause is the PC, cable, adapter, router, or ISP; they are general connectivity checks, not a Fortnite-specific guarantee. If the ISP cannot resolve the issue, contact Epic Support with the same test details and identify the affected mode, such as Zero Build, Reload, or Ranked.

When a hardware change is justified
Do the free comparisons before replacing equipment. If Ethernet works better than Wi-Fi, a cable may be a practical fix if your device and router have compatible ports and the cable run is workable. If testing points to a PC without Ethernet, consider a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter. If results point to a faulty router, Epic suggests trying a different one; replacing a functioning router is not a proven remedy for a problem caused by the ISP route or Fortnite’s selected subregion. No universal download-speed requirement or guaranteed ping reduction is established by these troubleshooting steps.
