Windows upgrade error 0x80070057 means “The parameter is incorrect.” It usually indicates that Windows Update or Setup encountered corrupted update files, an incorrect system configuration, or interference from software or hardware. Restart the computer, disconnect nonessential devices, run System File Checker, use the Windows Update troubleshooter, reset damaged update components, and then retry in a clean boot. If the failure remains, use Microsoft SetupDiag and the setup logs to identify the exact phase that is failing.

The code is generic, so the best fix depends on whether the upgrade fails while downloading, during setup initialization, after a reboot and rollback, or while applying changes to a disk or partition. Work through the manual sequence below in order; stop when the upgrade completes.

What error 0x80070057 means

Microsoft’s Windows upgrade and installation error table defines 0x80070057 as “The parameter is incorrect.” The message does not identify one defective file or component. It is a broad parameter or configuration failure that can be raised by Windows Update, the installation engine, a damaged update cache, or another part of setup.

Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance groups this code with failed updates caused by corrupted files or incorrect system configurations. That is why the same number can appear at different points in an upgrade. A download can be damaged before setup starts; a service can be in an inconsistent state; a startup program can interfere with the installer; or setup can encounter a problem while applying changes and roll back.

The code is not, by itself, proof of malware, a failing drive, or a permanently damaged Windows installation. Treat it as a starting point, then use the stage of failure and the results of each repair step to narrow the cause.

Before you retry the upgrade

  • Save open work and create a current backup of important personal files. An upgrade normally preserves data, but a failed installation can restart or roll back more than once.
  • Keep the computer connected to reliable power. Do not interrupt a reboot or a rollback unless the system has clearly returned to Windows and is no longer making progress.
  • Disconnect nonessential hardware: external drives, printers, scanners, USB accessories, docks, card readers, and other devices. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and hardware required to operate the computer.
  • Note exactly where the failure occurs. “Downloading,” “installing,” “restarting,” “undoing changes,” and a disk or partition message point to different next steps.
  • If you temporarily disable security software later in this guide, plan to restore it immediately after the test or after the upgrade finishes.

Fix Windows 10 error 0x80070057 step by step

1. Restart and remove peripherals

Restart Windows normally, sign in, and try the upgrade once with nonessential devices unplugged. A restart clears pending installer state and releases files or services that may have been left in use after an interrupted update. Removing external devices also prevents setup from loading an incompatible driver or attempting to migrate a device that is not needed for the upgrade.

If the upgrade succeeds after this step, reconnect devices one at a time after Windows has completed its post-upgrade work. That makes it easier to identify a particular peripheral or driver if the problem returns.

2. Repair protected Windows files with System File Checker

System File Checker (SFC) checks protected Windows system files and replaces corrupted copies when a valid local source is available. Microsoft lists it as a remedy for error 0x80070057.

  1. Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Enter sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  4. Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window because the percentage appears to pause at times while SFC processes large files.
  5. Restart the computer, then retry the Windows upgrade.

Use the result as a decision point:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC did not detect protected-file corruption. Continue with the Windows Update troubleshooter and component reset.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart before trying the upgrade. The repaired files may have been the cause.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Record the message, restart, and continue with the troubleshooter and update-component reset. The remaining setup logs can show which file or phase still fails.

3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Windows includes a troubleshooter that checks common update-service, configuration, and cache conditions. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter. Windows editions can label the surrounding page differently, so use the Settings search box for “Troubleshoot” if the menu is not shown exactly.

  1. Let the troubleshooter complete its checks.
  2. Apply each repair it offers.
  3. Install any updates it makes available.
  4. Restart if prompted.
  5. Run the troubleshooter again if it asks for another pass, then retry the upgrade.

If the troubleshooter reports that it could not identify a problem, that does not rule out a damaged download cache or a background service conflict. Continue to the next step rather than repeating the same upgrade attempt indefinitely.

4. Check Windows Update services and reset a damaged cache

The update client depends on Windows services and a local cache. If a download was interrupted or cache metadata became inconsistent, setup can repeatedly fail with the same parameter error. First confirm that the Windows Update service is running:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Update. Its status should be Running; if it is stopped, right-click it and choose Start.
  3. Retry the upgrade once. If the error returns, reset the update components using an elevated Command Prompt.

The following sequence stops the services that hold update files, renames the two cache folders so Windows can create clean replacements, and starts the services again. Renaming preserves the old folders as a fallback while forcing a fresh cache.

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run these commands one at a time:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv
  1. Close Command Prompt and restart Windows.
  2. Open Windows Update, allow it to check for updates, and retry the upgrade.

If a net stop command says the service is not running, continue with the remaining commands. If a rename reports that the folder is in use, restart and repeat the sequence before Windows Update begins another download. If the service refuses to start, use the Services console to check its status and restart the computer before trying again.

After a successful upgrade and a few stable restarts, you can delete the SoftwareDistribution.old and catroot2.old folders if they remain. Do not delete the active folders while update services are running.

5. Retry from a clean boot

A clean boot starts Windows with only essential Microsoft services and startup items. It is useful when an antivirus, antispyware program, system utility, overlay, hardware monitor, or other background program is blocking setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services. This checkbox is important; disabling Microsoft services indiscriminately can leave Windows unusable.
  3. Choose Disable all, then select Apply.
  4. Open the Startup tab and choose Open Task Manager.
  5. Disable enabled third-party startup items. Close Task Manager.
  6. Select OK in System Configuration and restart.
  7. Run the upgrade while the clean-boot state is active.

Microsoft also advises removing or disabling third-party antivirus or antispyware when it is blocking an upgrade. Use the product’s own uninstall or disable procedure, disconnect from untrusted networks if appropriate, and restore protection immediately after the test. Security software can complement Windows security, but leaving protection disabled longer than necessary creates avoidable risk.

If the upgrade works in a clean boot, return to msconfig, select Normal startup, restart, and then re-enable services and startup items in small groups. The group that causes the error identifies where to investigate. If the upgrade still fails in a clean boot, background software is less likely to be the cause.

6. Use SetupDiag and setup logs when the error persists

When the basic repairs do not change the result, stop guessing and inspect the installation evidence. Microsoft recommends its free SetupDiag tool, which analyzes Windows upgrade failures and reports a more specific rule or error when the available logs support one.

  1. Run SetupDiag after the failed upgrade has returned you to the desktop, so the relevant logs are still present.
  2. Allow it to complete its automatic analysis.
  3. Read the result and note the reported failure phase, error code, driver, package, or rule name.
  4. Review setup logs such as setuperr.log and the related setup activity log. Search for the first meaningful error before the final rollback messages; later entries often describe consequences rather than the original fault.
  5. Use the result to choose the next action instead of repeating every repair from the beginning.

For example, a log that points to a driver or device calls for removing that hardware and obtaining a compatible driver. A service or package error points back to Windows Update components or a clean boot. A disk or partition-stage error requires checking the destination release’s storage and compatibility requirements before another attempt. SetupDiag cannot repair every failure, but it can turn the generic 0x80070057 message into a narrower investigation.

Where the upgrade stops What it suggests Most useful next action
Windows Update download or initial preparation Corrupted update files, an inconsistent cache, or an update-service problem Run SFC, use the Windows Update troubleshooter, then reset the update components and retry
Setup initialization before the first reboot Incorrect configuration, incompatible peripheral, or background software conflict Disconnect nonessential hardware and perform a clean-boot retry; inspect SetupDiag if it still fails
Reboot, rollback, or “undoing changes” A driver, service, startup program, or migration action failed while setup was applying changes Use clean boot, remove unnecessary devices, and read setuperr.log for the failing phase
Disk or partition stage A destination-version requirement or storage-related setup condition Check the newer release’s hardware and compatibility requirements, then follow the specific SetupDiag or log finding

If SFC repairs files and the next attempt progresses farther, the corruption was likely part of the original failure. If the troubleshooter and cache reset make no difference but clean boot changes the result, focus on third-party services and startup programs. If none of those tests changes the failure point, the logs are more valuable than another blind retry.

Common mistakes that keep 0x80070057 coming back

  • Retrying without restarting: pending service and installer state can survive a failed attempt.
  • Leaving external storage connected: setup may inspect or migrate a device that is not required for Windows.
  • Running SFC without elevation: a non-administrator Command Prompt cannot perform the full repair.
  • Stopping update services but not starting them again: Windows Update will remain disabled until the services are restored.
  • Disabling every service in System Configuration: hide Microsoft services first and change only third-party entries.
  • Keeping antivirus disabled after troubleshooting: restore protection as soon as the test ends.
  • Reading only the final log line: rollback messages can be symptoms; the first substantive error is usually more informative.
  • Repeating the same failed attempt without recording its stage: note whether the percentage, reboot, or rollback point changes after each repair.

Check the destination release before another upgrade

Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft’s standard support statement on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says: “After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.” In 2026, an upgrade plan should therefore include the destination version, not just a successful installation.

If you are moving from Windows 10 to a newer supported release, check that release’s hardware and compatibility requirements before retrying. Confirm that the computer, firmware, storage, applications, and required drivers are eligible for the destination version. A machine that can run Windows 10 is not automatically eligible for every newer release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the destination is still Windows 10 from an older operating system, the same compatibility check applies to that edition and installation method. Keep a backup, use only the required installation media or Windows Update path, and do not interrupt a reboot or rollback.

When to stop manual retries

Stop repeating the sequence when SetupDiag identifies a specific driver, package, or hardware condition. Address that finding first and make one controlled retry. If setup repeatedly rolls back with no useful diagnosis, preserve the logs and note the exact phase, recent hardware or software changes, and every repair result before seeking professional support. A generic 0x80070057 message alone cannot distinguish among all of those causes.

In most cases, the efficient path is: remove peripherals, repair system files, run the troubleshooter, reset the update cache, test a clean boot, and then use SetupDiag. This order starts with low-risk actions and ends with evidence-based diagnosis rather than repeated trial and error.

As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering cleanup and diagnostic features. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a subscription, results vary, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus protection or a log-based diagnosis.
