How to Fix Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or Battery Problems After a macOS Update

Separate Mac update timing from the real cause: troubleshoot Wi-Fi, Bluetooth interference, fast battery drain, and charging faults with practical checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or battery behavior changed after a macOS update, first identify the exact symptom and check whether it affects one network or device—or everything. The timing alone does not prove the update caused the problem. Use the checks below to separate a Mac issue from a router, accessory, app, or charging fault before trying disruptive resets.

Start by identifying what is failing

Note your Mac model, macOS version, and whether it uses Apple silicon or an Intel processor. Then describe the symptom precisely: Wi-Fi missing, unable to join a network, connected without internet, Bluetooth device missing or disconnecting, stuttering audio, fast battery drain, or a battery that will not charge.

Test the smallest relevant change: another Wi-Fi network, another Bluetooth device, or another known-good power adapter if available. Whether the issue follows the Mac or stays with one network or accessory helps determine what to check next.

Fix Wi-Fi connection and internet problems

Confirm whether the Mac is connected to Wi-Fi

  1. Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled and the Mac is connected to the intended network.
  2. If it cannot join, restart the Mac and try again. Check whether another device can join the same network.
  3. If the Mac joins Wi-Fi but websites and services do not work, test another device on that network. A working Wi-Fi connection does not guarantee that the router or internet service is online.

For a Mac that is connected but has no internet, also check that the date and time are correct, temporarily review whether a VPN or other network-security software is affecting access, and restart the Mac. If other devices also lack internet, check the router and internet service rather than changing Mac network settings. For a router you manage, consult its manufacturer’s firmware guidance and recommended settings. Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide covers these checks.

Use Apple’s wireless diagnostics

If the Mac offers Wi-Fi Recommendations, review them. They are not available for enterprise networks or personal hotspots. To analyze a network already set up on the Mac, press and hold Option while clicking the Wi-Fi menu, then choose Open Wireless Diagnostics. Wireless Diagnostics reports detected issues and possible solutions without changing network settings; see Apple’s Wireless Diagnostics instructions.

Try another network if possible. If Wi-Fi works there, focus on the original router, network, or internet service. If it fails across networks, continue with Mac-side troubleshooting and contact Apple Support if needed. Avoid deleting network configuration files or running Terminal commands as a first step.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can both be affected by wireless interference. Apple lists weak or dropping Wi-Fi, Bluetooth audio interruptions, and erratic pointer movement among possible symptoms. Both technologies use the 2.4 GHz band, and nearby equipment can contribute to interference. Try these reversible checks:

  • Reduce the number of active devices using 2.4 GHz. If your router supports 5 GHz, move compatible Wi-Fi devices to that band.
  • Check the router’s channel settings using its manufacturer’s guidance.

Apple describes these interference symptoms and checks in its wireless-interference guidance. These tests can help isolate a cause; they do not establish whether the macOS update was involved. Apple’s reviewed guidance does not establish a universal post-update Bluetooth reset or re-pairing procedure, so avoid treating a cache reset or forgetting every device as a guaranteed fix.

Investigate fast battery drain

Faster discharge and failure to charge are different symptoms. For fast drain, start with battery condition and energy use rather than charging hardware.

  1. Open Battery settings and check the battery condition. Apple’s guide to a Mac battery that runs out of charge quickly explains the available checks.
  2. Review Low Power Mode and display and sleep settings. Quit apps you are not using, disconnect unnecessary accessories, and use Activity Monitor to investigate apps or processes consuming energy.
  3. Consider whether Spotlight may still be indexing after the update. Apple says indexing follows software updates or upgrades and can take hours or even days depending on the amount of data. Keep the Mac connected to power and idle when practical while this work proceeds; indexing is one possible temporary workload, not proof that all post-update battery drain is expected.

Apple’s energy-saving guidance describes settings that can reduce energy use. Apple does not specify a universal time for Mac battery behavior to return to normal after an update.

Check a Mac battery that will not charge

  1. Check that the adapter, cable, charging port, AC connection, and outlet are secure. Look for visible damage and stop using damaged charging equipment.
  2. Review Battery settings and battery condition. Reduce unusually heavy workloads and let the Mac cool in a ventilated area if it is hot.
  3. Keep the Mac within Apple’s stated ambient operating range for charging: 10–35 °C (50–95 °F). See Apple’s charging troubleshooting guide.
  4. If software or power management may be involved, restart an Apple silicon Mac. SMC reset instructions apply to other Mac computers and must match the specific model; do not use an Intel Mac procedure on Apple silicon.
  5. Run Apple Diagnostics if you suspect a hardware component. If the problem persists, contact Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider.

When to get help—and what to report

Seek Apple support or service for persistent charging problems, suspected hardware faults, or symptoms that continue across networks or accessories after the basic checks. When you contact support, have the following details ready:
