Who can access Pornhub in Australia now?
Aylo describes the restoration as a “measured step,” not a return for all Australians. The company says eligible age-confirmed Australian iOS users are welcome back to Pornhub and will receive the standard adult experience. Its announcement does not specify when—or whether—access will return for Android or desktop users. Aylo’s 6 October announcement does not explain what alternative, if any, is available to people who cannot confirm age through an Apple Account.

How Apple age confirmation works in Australia
Apple’s process is tied to an Apple Account; it is not a Pornhub purchase or a universal Australian identity-check system. According to Apple’s Australian age-requirements page, published 14 September 2026, an adult may confirm being 18 or older with an eligible credit card belonging to them, or by scanning a passport, driver’s licence or government-issued ID. Debit and gift cards are not supported.

For existing Apple Accounts, Apple checks whether an eligible credit card or another confirmation method is available. Apple says Web Content Filter and Communication Safety are automatically on until an adult confirms their age. It also requires age confirmation before downloading or purchasing apps rated 18+.

Why Pornhub blocked access—and what Australia’s rules require
The Guardian reported that Aylo blocked Australian users in March 2026, when the age-assurance rules took effect. It reported that Aylo objected to site-based checks, arguing they would not protect minors and would create privacy risks. Those are the company’s stated objections, not findings established independently by the reporting. The Guardian’s 6 October report covered the block and the staged return.
Australia’s mandatory Age-Restricted Material Codes took effect on 9 March 2026 for designated internet services, social media services, app distribution platforms and equipment providers. The eSafety Commissioner classifies pornography sites as high-risk services and says a simple “I am 18 or older” self-declaration button is no longer sufficient. The rules are intended to restrict minors’ access; they do not make pornography illegal for adults. eSafety’s FAQ on access to online pornography and other adult content explains the codes and obligations, and its pornography guidance states that viewing pornography has long been legal in Australia, while access is meant to be restricted to adults.

What age-assurance methods are allowed?
The codes permit a range of approaches, including photo-ID matching, facial age estimation, credit-card checks, digital identity wallets or systems, parental confirmation and AI-based age estimation. eSafety says providers should offer more than one method and should not rely on government ID as their only option. Methods must minimise personal-information collection and comply with privacy law; eSafety also says checks should be technically accurate, robust, reliable and fair.
The codes do not require providers to send individual browsing data to eSafety. The regulator says ongoing failure to comply may lead to civil penalties of up to A$54.6 million per breach. That is a maximum potential penalty described by the regulator, not a fine reported against Aylo.

What Aylo says about Apple’s approach
Aylo presents Apple’s device-level approach as a privacy-protective way to help restrict minors’ access. The company says it considers the Australian update especially strong, but that is Aylo’s view—not a regulator finding or proof that the approach cannot be circumvented. Its announcement, by Alex Kekesi, Aylo’s VP of Brand and Community, says: “As a result, today Aylo welcomes eligible age-confirmed Australian iOS users back to Pornhub.”
