A white line on an Android screen can point to a display hardware problem, especially if it appeared after a drop or persists through basic checks. The line alone cannot identify the failed component. Start with safe, reversible steps; if it remains, contact your phone maker or an authorized repair provider.
Why is there a white line on your phone screen?
A line may be related to the display, but the symptom by itself does not confirm a specific cause. A drop, pressure, or other impact makes display damage a relevant possibility—even when the outer glass looks intact. Software or an app may also affect screen behavior, so begin with checks that do not risk further damage.

Google’s Pixel support guidance says flickering, a green tint, or horizontal or vertical lines may indicate a hardware issue. Samsung says impact can cause abnormal lines or colors and recommends display repair for lines that occur in that context. These recommendations apply to the devices and situations those manufacturers describe, not automatically to every Android phone. 1. Inspect the screen and remove anything covering it
Look for cracks, chips, impact marks, or signs of pressure, and note whether the line began after a drop. Remove the case and screen protector, clean the display, and check whether the line changes. Google’s general Android screen guidance recommends these initial checks. Do not press, bend, or heat the screen to try to make the line disappear; those actions can cause further damage.

2. Restart the phone
Restart using the phone’s normal controls. Google’s general screen guide says holding the power button for about 30 seconds works on most phones, but button behavior and menus vary. If that does not match your device, follow its manual rather than forcing a button combination.
3. Use Safe Mode to check for an app-related symptom
Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the line disappears there, an app may be involved; if it remains, the test has not shown that an app caused it. Safe Mode does not repair the screen or diagnose a particular hardware failure, and the steps to enter and exit it differ by model. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your phone. Samsung also describes Safe Mode as a way to distinguish downloaded-app behavior from issues that remain with the original software.

4. Check for a system update if your manufacturer recommends it
For Pixel phones, Google recommends checking for a system update when the screen flickers, shows a green tint, or has horizontal or vertical lines. The menu path and troubleshooting advice can differ on other Android brands, so use the instructions for your model rather than assuming Pixel steps apply to every phone.

If the line remains after the basic checks, or appeared after an impact, contact the phone manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Google directs Pixel owners with persistent lines to support or repair. Samsung recommends display repair for impact-related horizontal or vertical lines. For another brand, use that manufacturer’s support channel or an authorized repair option.

Back up data you can still access before service, if possible. Ask the provider directly whether your warranty or accidental-damage coverage applies; coverage depends on your device and circumstances and is not established by the symptom alone.
