Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →First identify where the thumbnail is missing: on the directory page itself, in a social or messaging link preview, or in Google Search or Images. These are different display systems, so the right fix depends on which one fails. Check one affected listing page and its exact image URL before changing metadata or cache settings.
Identify which thumbnail is failing
Record a representative listing-page URL, the image URL that should appear, the affected platform, and whether the image is missing, stale, or incorrect.

- Missing on the directory site: inspect the page’s own image element, listing data, and image request. Open Graph tags will not repair an on-page
<img>that fails to render. - Missing or wrong in a shared link: inspect the page’s Open Graph metadata and the sharing platform’s fetch and preview cache.
- Missing in Google: use Google Search Console and check Google’s access to both the page and image.
If many listings fail but one works, compare the affected entries with the working one. A failure across many pages can point to a shared template, image-delivery path, or access rule; an isolated failure can point to that listing’s record or image URL. This is a diagnostic inference, not a confirmed cause for any particular directory.
For link previews, check the metadata served for each listing
LinkedIn documents og:title, og:image, og:description, and og:url for its sharing module. Its guidance says developers should ensure the source code complies with Open Graph Protocol and LinkedIn-specific image requirements. LinkedIn’s shareability requirements describe the fields; use the actual values for the listing being shared.

Inspect the raw HTML head returned to a visitor without signing in. For a client-rendered single-page application, compare that server response with the browser’s post-JavaScript DOM. Metadata added only after JavaScript runs may not be available to every platform crawler. WhatsApp-specific troubleshooting guidance raises this as a possibility, but verify behavior using the affected platform’s own preview tool rather than assuming all crawlers behave alike. Secondary WhatsApp preview troubleshooting discusses this issue.
Confirm that the page and image are publicly fetchable
- Open the exact image URL in a private browser session. Confirm it returns the intended image without requiring a login, cookie, or special session.
- Check the response and redirects. Look for an HTTP error, an unexpected destination, or a response that is not the intended image.
- Review robots.txt and access controls. Check that the relevant page and image paths are not blocked, and review authentication, CDN, firewall, and server rules.
- Inspect server or security logs. Look for requests around the time the platform tried to fetch the page or image and whether those requests were denied or failed.
Google says password protection or a robots.txt block can prevent its crawler from accessing a page or image, and that it indexes only media it is allowed to crawl. Google’s checks apply to Google’s crawler, not automatically to social or messaging crawlers. Use Google’s page and image availability guidance, Google’s media crawling controls, and Google’s technical guidance when diagnosing Google access.
A secondary WhatsApp troubleshooting source recommends checking for an absolute HTTPS image URL and a supported format, and flags unusually small or large images. It reports numeric thresholds, but those are not confirmed here against an official WhatsApp specification, so treat them as troubleshooting suggestions rather than guaranteed limits. Distinguish a failed fetch from a stale preview
If the current page source and image URL are correct but a preview still shows an older image, the platform may be displaying stored preview data. LinkedIn’s Post Inspector lets a site owner inspect refreshed preview data for a URL. LinkedIn says this refresh applies to new posts; existing posts retain the preview they already have. Use LinkedIn Post Inspector for a LinkedIn share. For another platform, use its current official debugger or inspector if available and verify the refreshed preview there; refreshing one service does not establish that another service’s cache has changed.
When the problem is in Google Search or Images
Use Search Console’s URL Inspection on the affected page or image to check Google’s access, and inspect live rendering where appropriate. Review robots.txt and authentication restrictions as well. Google distinguishes crawling from indexing: robots.txt controls crawling, while noindex is an indexing instruction and does not itself make a resource inaccessible to users. Search Console can also help diagnose downtime and speed issues. See Google’s URL and image availability guidance and Google’s crawling overview.

To capture a page while inspecting what a crawler-visible page looks like, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. One GET request returns an image or PDF; the response includes page-verdict and billing headers. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does fixing Open Graph metadata repair an image missing on the directory page itself?
No. Open Graph metadata is for link previews; diagnose the page’s image element, listing data, and image request for an on-site failure.
Will refreshing a LinkedIn preview change posts that were already published?
LinkedIn says Post Inspector refreshes preview data for new posts; existing posts keep their previous preview.

Does a robots.txt block mean users cannot open the image?
Not necessarily. Google describes robots.txt as a crawling control; it is distinct from a user-facing access restriction.
