How to Screenshot a WebGL Page in Playwright

Use an application-owned readiness condition before capturing WebGL with Playwright. Learn the basic screenshot flow, visual assertions, repeatability tips and headless Chromium diagnostics.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Navigate to the page, wait for your application to confirm that the WebGL scene has drawn the frame you want, then call page.screenshot(). A page-load event alone does not tell Playwright that an arbitrary WebGL scene is ready, so use an app-specific signal rather than assuming a fixed delay or networkidle is enough.

Capture a WebGL page after the scene is ready

This JavaScript example uses a hypothetical window.sceneReady flag. Replace it with a readiness condition your own application exposes, such as a scene-ready flag or a visible marker tied to the intended rendered state.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 } });

await page.goto('https://example.com/interactive-scene');
// Example only: expose `window.sceneReady` when your app has drawn its target frame.
await page.waitForFunction(() => window.sceneReady === true, { timeout: 15000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'webgl.png', fullPage: false });

await browser.close();

page.waitForFunction() evaluates a predicate in the page and, by default, polls using requestAnimationFrame. Its timeout is configurable; choose a limit that suits the application so a scene that never becomes ready does not leave the job waiting indefinitely. See Playwright’s Page API documentation for navigation, waiting and screenshot options.

Choose the capture scope

Use a page screenshot when you need the rendered page, including its canvas and surrounding interface. Set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page; the example uses false to capture the current viewport. If the target is a particular element, Playwright also provides locator screenshots, which can limit the capture to that element. Pick the scope that matches what the test or artifact needs.

Use a visual assertion for regression tests

For Playwright Test, use toHaveScreenshot() when the goal is to compare a rendered result with a stored baseline:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('WebGL scene matches its baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com/interactive-scene');
  await page.waitForFunction(() => window.sceneReady === true);
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('webgl-scene.png');
});

The assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots match, then compares the last screenshot with the expected snapshot. This helps avoid comparing while the page is still changing, but it does not define when your WebGL application has reached the correct scene state. The application-specific readiness check remains important. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide.

Make WebGL captures repeatable

Visual output can vary across operating systems, browser versions, browser settings, hardware, power source and headless mode. Create and compare baselines in a consistent environment: use the same Playwright and browser versions, operating-system image, settings and headless mode wherever possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WebGL scenes often animate independently of CSS. Disabling CSS animations for a screenshot does not control a WebGL render loop. For a stable image, make the application deterministic or expose a way to select and signal the target frame or state before capture.

Diagnose blank or different-looking screenshots

  • Blank canvas or fallback view: check whether the app’s readiness condition actually became true and whether the canvas rendered the intended frame. Inspect the browser mode and host; there is no single Playwright setting documented to fix every WebGL rendering failure.
  • Local and CI images differ: align the browser and Playwright versions, operating-system image, settings and headless mode used for baseline creation and comparison.
  • Headless Chromium looks different: Playwright documents a headless shell and the 'chromium' channel for its new headless mode. Chromium’s headless GPU guidance says --enable-gpu disables forced software rendering. Treat that as a Chromium-specific diagnostic, and verify its effect on the CI host before adopting it; it is not a universal fix for every browser or machine. See Playwright’s browser documentation and Chromium’s headless GPU guidance.
  • DOM inspection does not reveal the scene: canvas output is visual and may not appear as ordinary accessible page text. A screenshot gives you a visual reference for what the canvas rendered. Playwright discusses screenshot-based interaction with canvas and WebGL in Vision Mode.
  • Images differ between runs: determine whether the scene is animated or otherwise time-dependent. Control the app’s state or target frame; CSS-animation screenshot options do not freeze WebGL rendering.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need an image from a URL without setting up Playwright and a browser, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, using cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/interactive-scene -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Its cleanup can accept cookie banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does networkidle mean a WebGL scene is ready?

No. It describes network activity, not whether an application has drawn the intended WebGL frame. Wait for a readiness signal owned by the application.

Can Playwright disable a WebGL scene’s animation when taking a screenshot?

CSS animation controls do not freeze a WebGL render loop. Make the scene deterministic or provide an app-level way to select and signal the frame to capture.
