For a 4K YouTube live stream, start with YouTube’s H.264 targets: 30 Mbps at 2160p/30 fps or 35 Mbps at 2160p/60 fps. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and match the frame rate to your source where practical. A 24/7 broadcast needs more than encoder settings: test the complete playlist, monitor the stream, and record a local archive if you need a replay, because YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
Recommended YouTube settings for a 4K live stream
The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations, checked on October 3, 2026. They are starting targets, not a guarantee that your encoder or internet connection can sustain them. Use the frame rate of the source where practical; up-converting a lower-frame-rate video does not add motion detail.

YouTube’s encoder guide also lists AV1 and H.265/HEVC bitrate ranges of 8–35 Mbps for 2160p30 and 10–40 Mbps for 2160p60. Those are ranges for those codecs, not alternatives to the H.264 recommendations in the table. See YouTube’s encoder settings for the current codec and resolution guidance.

Set the encoder basics
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: every two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Video: progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR content where appropriate.
- Audio: AAC where appropriate to the production.
- Transport: RTMP or RTMPS. RTMPS is YouTube’s encrypted RTMP option; see YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into formats for different devices and connections. Sending a 4K feed does not mean every viewer will receive 4K: playback quality depends on the available rendition and the viewer’s device and connection.

Allow enough upload bandwidth
Your available upload capacity must exceed the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room for bandwidth variation and other traffic. Applying that headroom to a 30 Mbps H.264 video target gives a planning figure of at least 36 Mbps of usable upload capacity for that stream, before accounting for other devices or services using the connection. That 36 Mbps figure is arithmetic from YouTube’s guidance, not a separate YouTube-published bitrate target.
- Run a realistic upload speed test at the location and time you expect to stream.
- Account for household or office traffic, Wi-Fi variation, and any other streams or uploads.
- Test with the actual playlist, including its loudest audio and most demanding motion, rather than relying only on a speed-test result.

Create the live stream in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. The precise controls may change, so use YouTube’s current live stream settings guide if a label differs.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder or streaming service. Keep the key private; reset it in Studio if it is exposed.
- If you select “Reuse settings” from a previous event, review the copied metadata and settings before starting. Do not assume an old event’s details still fit this playlist.
- Review latency and DVR settings in the Live Control Room. YouTube’s low-latency improvement option is unavailable for 2160p, so 4K streams use normal latency. DVR allows viewers to pause and rewind a live stream and then continue from where they paused.
- Start a private or unlisted test if appropriate for your channel, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the setup.
YouTube’s reviewed setup guidance does not prescribe a particular way to add, order, or loop prerecorded files. That behavior depends on the encoder or streaming service you choose. Confirm that the playlist repeats and resumes as intended in a test; do not assume that a playlist will continue unattended just because the stream key is configured.

A 24/7 broadcast stays live only while its content source, encoder or service, and network keep working. A brief preview can catch configuration problems, but it cannot establish that a setup will run uninterrupted for days. YouTube recommends preparing encoders in advance, checking the preview and stream health, and ensuring local archive files are growing and intact. Its live stream tips cover operational checks.

- Watch for stream-health alerts and verify both audio and video after starting.
- Check that the playlist advances and loops, including at the transition from its last item to its first.
- If you record locally, confirm that the file is growing and can be played back.
- Arrange a way to notice a stopped encoder, lost connection, or failed content source; unattended operation does not remove the need to monitor failures.
Do not rely on YouTube to archive a 24/7 broadcast
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours and automatically archives 1440p and 2160p streams. Its warning is that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 stream exceeds that threshold, so do not promise or plan on a complete YouTube replay. If the full recording matters, make and test a separate local recording, and plan enough storage for the intended duration. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Check copyright and monetization before looping content
Copyright can interrupt a live stream
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted material appearing in another broadcast. If it detects such material, it may show a placeholder and warn the channel; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A live stream can also be terminated following a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. If you have licensed third-party material, YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist or the live stream may still be interrupted. Content ID claims on an archived live stream are made after the stream ends if you archive it. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and use content you have the rights to broadcast.

Permission does not guarantee monetization
Copyright clearance and YouTube Partner Program monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s channel monetization policy may exclude highly repetitive or mass-produced content with little educational, commentary, narrative, or other value. Its reused-content review is distinct from copyright: owning footage or having permission to use it does not, by itself, establish that a channel meets monetization policy. The assessment is at channel level, so a stream’s title or schedule alone cannot guarantee an outcome. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
