First determine whether the page or the screenshot is clipping the menu
Open the dropdown in the browser and compare what you see with the screenshot. If the menu is fully visible on screen but missing or cropped in the file, investigate screenshot settings first. If it is already cut off, hidden, or behind another element on the live page, fix the page layout before changing the capture.

This distinction matters: a screenshot can only include the area it is configured to capture, while CSS can independently clip or cover content in the rendered page.
Choose a capture scope that includes the open dropdown
Playwright supports viewport screenshots, full-page screenshots, selected-element screenshots, and a clip rectangle. Check the project’s installed Playwright version for the exact current API options at Playwright’s Screenshots documentation.

Full-page capture concerns the scrollable page, not the menu’s open state. Reproduce the state you want before taking the screenshot. For responsive pages, set the viewport to the dimensions that trigger the intended layout.
Use Playwright to open the menu and capture it
Here is a runnable Node.js example using Playwright. Replace the URL and selectors with those for your page. It sets the viewport, opens the dropdown, waits for it to become visible, and captures the menu element itself.

})();Install Playwright in the project before running the script, and verify the screenshot methods against the version installed there. If you need page context around the dropdown rather than just the element, use a page screenshot with a clip region large enough to contain both the menu and surrounding UI, or use a viewport/full-page screenshot as appropriate. Full-page capture is useful only if the page’s open-menu state remains present and correctly positioned during capture.
Fix clipping caused by CSS overflow
If the menu is cut off in the live page, inspect its ancestors in browser developer tools. Check each ancestor’s dimensions and computed overflow, overflow-x, and overflow-y values. A constrained ancestor using overflow: hidden or overflow: clip can cut off content extending beyond its box; scroll-oriented overflow values instead provide scroll-container behavior. - Inspect the dropdown and walk up its ancestor elements in the DOM.
- Identify the first ancestor whose box and computed overflow correspond to the crop.
- Choose a fix that suits the component: revise the container constraint, place the menu elsewhere in the DOM, or use the component framework’s supported overlay mechanism.
- Retest the page at the viewport size used for the screenshot, then capture again.
Do not remove overflow rules indiscriminately. They may be essential to a carousel, panel, or other layout. Confirm which ancestor is responsible and preserve the surrounding design behavior.
Fix menus that are behind other elements
A menu that is present but covered is a stacking problem, not necessarily an overflow crop. Inspect the stacking contexts created by the menu and its ancestors. A stacking context is self-contained, so a child’s z-index is compared within its parent context; a very large child value may not lift that entire parent above a neighboring context. MDN’s nested-menu example demonstrates how a submenu can appear beneath neighboring menus because of the context hierarchy. Depending on the layout, possible approaches include avoiding overlap, adjusting z-index at the relevant context levels, or flattening the hierarchy. Raising only the dropdown’s own z-index is not a universal fix.

Make the capture repeatable
For automated screenshots, establish the viewport before navigation when responsive behavior matters, reproduce the interaction that opens the dropdown, and capture the element, region, or page that matches the deliverable. The correct selector and ordering depend on the page’s implementation. If the menu opens on hover rather than click, use the corresponding interaction in the script; if opening it triggers delayed content, wait for the specific menu or content to be visible before capture instead of relying on an arbitrary short delay.

Troubleshoot common clipped-menu symptoms
- The menu is visible in the browser but absent from the image: confirm the screenshot is not limited to a viewport, element, or clip rectangle that excludes it.
- The menu is already cut off on the page: inspect ancestor dimensions and computed overflow, then change only the responsible layout constraint.
- The menu appears behind another panel: trace stacking contexts through its ancestors; adjust the parent context or layout rather than only increasing the child’s z-index.
- The menu is missing in a full-page image: full-page capture does not open transient UI. Open the menu and confirm it remains visible in the rendered state before capture.
- The screenshot has the wrong responsive layout: set a viewport that triggers the intended breakpoint before loading and opening the menu.
- The element screenshot omits useful context: capture a containing element or use a clip rectangle with bounds that include both the menu and the desired surrounding UI.

Why doesn’t a very large z-index fix my dropdown?
The dropdown may be inside a lower stacking context. Its z-index is resolved within that parent context, so inspect and adjust the relevant ancestor context or layout.
Does a full-page screenshot automatically include an open dropdown?
No. Full-page capture covers the scrollable page; you must reproduce the menu’s open state and confirm that it is positioned correctly before capture.
