Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →WebGPU startup on an M1, M2, M3, M4 or M5 Mac is a chain of checks, not a single switch. First verify that the page is a secure context and that navigator.gpu exists; then obtain an adapter, request a device, configure the canvas and create pipelines. The failing stage identifies the remedy. Chrome 113 and later support WebGPU on macOS, while Safari availability and diagnostics vary by release. GPU-process crashes, blocked adapters, over-restrictive feature requests, device loss and shader validation errors each need a different fix.
Start by identifying the stage that fails
Use a minimal test page and record the exact exception before changing code. Include the Mac model and chip, macOS build, browser and version, page origin, whether the failure is repeatable, and the complete console message. Do not begin by reinstalling a browser or buying an external GPU; Apple Silicon Macs use their integrated Apple GPU and the evidence supports a diagnostic sequence rather than a universal hardware cure.

| Initialization stage | Typical symptom | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Browser/context | navigator.gpu is undefined |
The browser does not expose WebGPU for this page, commonly because the release lacks support, the feature is disabled, or the page is not a secure context. |
| Adapter | await navigator.gpu.requestAdapter() returns null |
No adapter satisfying the browser’s availability and your requested constraints was found. |
| Device | requestDevice() rejects or device.lost fires |
A device could not be created, or an existing device was reset, removed or reclaimed. |
| Canvas | Context configuration throws or rendering is blank | The canvas format, dimensions, usage or device/context pairing is invalid. |
| Pipeline/resources | Validation errors, uncaptured errors or a browser crash | Shader, bind-group, limit or pipeline descriptors are invalid, or the browser/GPU process has a release-specific defect. |
1. Confirm browser support and a secure context
Check the API before touching application code
Run this in the page console:
console.log({
userAgent: navigator.userAgent,
secure: window.isSecureContext,
webgpu: !!navigator.gpu
});
If webgpu is false, no adapter or device code can succeed. Chrome for Developers documents WebGPU support from Chrome 113 on macOS, ChromeOS and Windows. Update to a current stable Chrome release before debugging an older build. WebGPU is restricted to secure contexts: use HTTPS in production and http://localhost for local development. An ordinary HTTP address on a LAN hostname or IP is not automatically equivalent to localhost; serve it over HTTPS or use a properly configured local origin.
Check the page origin and embedded contexts
Open the page directly in the browser rather than inside an insecure iframe. A secure top-level page can still be affected by iframe policy, sandboxing or an origin that is not permitted to use the feature. Test the same code as a standalone HTTPS document to separate policy problems from WebGPU problems.

Enable Chrome graphics acceleration
In Chrome, open Settings > System and turn on Use graphics acceleration when available, then relaunch Chrome. The setting controls whether Chrome attempts hardware-backed rendering; it does not guarantee that a particular WebGPU adapter will be exposed.
2. Use chrome://gpu to distinguish hardware, software and process failures
Enter chrome://gpu in Chrome’s address bar. Review the graphics feature status and problems list, especially:
- WebGPU: Hardware accelerated indicates that Chrome is using a hardware path for WebGPU.
- Software only, disabled features or a blocklist notice indicates that Chrome has selected a fallback or prevented the feature because of a driver, browser or stability rule.
- GPU-process crash messages indicate that the browser’s graphics process, rather than your JavaScript alone, may be failing.
Capture this page’s status with the browser version and console error when reporting a bug. Chrome notes that a repeatedly crashed GPU process may require reloading the page or restarting Chrome. A restart clears a wedged GPU process but does not repair an incompatible release or a reproducible application validation error.

MDN specifies that requestAdapter() resolves to null when an appropriate adapter is unavailable. “Unavailable” includes both platform conditions and requirements your code has imposed.
Run the least restrictive adapter request
const adapter = await navigator.gpu.requestAdapter();
if (!adapter) {
throw new Error('No WebGPU adapter is available');
}
console.log(adapter.info);
Do not start with a required power preference, optional feature list or elevated limits. Once the basic request succeeds, add requirements one at a time and log which addition causes it to fail.

Remove constraints that the Mac does not provide
Temporarily omit powerPreference, forceFallbackAdapter, requiredFeatures and requiredLimits. A request such as requiredFeatures: ['timestamp-query'] can fail on an adapter that otherwise supports WebGPU. Check adapter.features before requiring a feature, and compare every requested limit with adapter.limits.
const adapter = await navigator.gpu.requestAdapter();
if (!adapter) throw new Error('No adapter');
const wanted = ['timestamp-query'];
const requiredFeatures = wanted.filter(name => adapter.features.has(name));
const device = await adapter.requestDevice({ requiredFeatures });
Only request a feature when your application has a fallback or has confirmed support. Treat an absent adapter as a capability result, not as proof that the Apple GPU is defective.
Check platform and blocklist causes
Verify the secure-context test, update the browser, inspect chrome://gpu, and retry a minimal sample. A browser GPU blocklist, a disabled graphics process, remote-desktop policy or a temporary driver/OS problem can prevent adapter exposure. If the same minimal page works in current Chrome but not Safari, the difference points toward WebKit release behavior rather than your adapter code.
4. Request the device once and handle device loss
After a non-null adapter, request one device for that adapter and install loss handling immediately:
const adapter = await navigator.gpu.requestAdapter();
if (!adapter) throw new Error('No adapter');
const device = await adapter.requestDevice();
device.lost.then(async info => {
console.error('WebGPU device lost:', info.reason, info.message);
if (info.reason !== 'destroyed') {
await rebuildWebGPU();
}
});
MDN describes many device-loss causes as transient, including browser resource management and driver updates. A loss is therefore recoverable application state, not necessarily a permanent failure.

Rebuild every resource tied to the old device
A replacement device cannot use objects created by the lost device. Your recovery routine must obtain a fresh adapter and device, then recreate the canvas context configuration, shader modules, bind-group layouts, pipelines, buffers, textures, samplers, bind groups, depth textures and any cached render-pass state. Stop submitting work to the old queue while rebuilding. Guard against multiple simultaneous recovery calls so several device.lost handlers do not create competing devices.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
let state = { recovering: false, device: null, context: null };
async function rebuildWebGPU() {
if (state.recovering) return;
state.recovering = true;
try {
const adapter = await navigator.gpu.requestAdapter();
if (!adapter) throw new Error('Adapter unavailable during recovery');
const device = await adapter.requestDevice();
const context = canvas.getContext('webgpu');
context.configure({ device, format: navigator.gpu.getPreferredCanvasFormat() });
await createAllResources(device);
state = { recovering: false, device, context };
device.lost.then(info => {
if (info.reason !== 'destroyed') rebuildWebGPU();
});
} catch (error) {
state.recovering = false;
showRetryMessage(error);
}
}
Do not automatically rebuild after an intentional device.destroy(); use the reason value to distinguish deliberate shutdown from an unexpected loss. Keep the original error message for diagnostics and expose a retry path if recovery cannot obtain a device.
5. Configure the canvas only after the device exists
Canvas configuration depends on the device and a format supported by the browser. A minimal sequence is:
const canvas = document.querySelector('canvas');
const context = canvas.getContext('webgpu');
if (!context) throw new Error('WebGPU canvas context unavailable');
const format = navigator.gpu.getPreferredCanvasFormat();
context.configure({
device,
format,
alphaMode: 'premultiplied'
});
- Use the device created for this context; do not configure with a device from a previous recovery cycle.
- Use
getPreferredCanvasFormat()unless you have a tested reason to select another format. - Set the canvas’s drawing-buffer width and height deliberately when the display size or device-pixel ratio changes, then reconfigure if your rendering setup requires it.
- Keep context configuration out of code that can run before adapter and device creation.
A blank canvas after successful initialization is a later rendering problem. Check that a command encoder, render pass, pipeline and submission are actually created, ended and submitted; do not misdiagnose a missing draw call as adapter failure.
6. Capture validation and shader errors before they become crashes
Use error scopes around risky operations
WebGPU validation errors are asynchronous. Surround pipeline, bind-group and resource creation with an error scope and inspect the result:

device.pushErrorScope('validation');
let pipeline;
try {
pipeline = device.createRenderPipeline(descriptor);
} finally {
const error = await device.popErrorScope();
if (error) console.error('Pipeline validation:', error.message);
}
Use the out-of-memory scope for allocation-sensitive code when appropriate. Keep scopes narrow enough to identify the operation that generated the error; a single scope around an entire frame makes the message difficult to act on.
Listen for uncaptured errors portably
Attach the event listener form rather than assuming that the convenience property exists:
device.addEventListener('uncapturederror', event => {
console.error('Uncaptured WebGPU error:', event.error.message);
});
WebKit bug 323544 reported that Safari 26.6 on an Apple M2 Max did not expose the GPUDevice.onuncapturederror handler attribute, while addEventListener('uncapturederror', ...) worked. Code that assigns only device.onuncapturederror = ... can therefore miss diagnostics on affected Safari releases.
Validate shader and pipeline descriptors
- Confirm vertex and fragment entry-point names exactly match the WGSL module.
- Match vertex-buffer strides, locations and formats to the shader inputs.
- Ensure bind-group layout visibility and binding types agree with shader declarations.
- Use compatible color and depth formats and sample counts.
- Check that required limits, workgroup sizes and storage-buffer usage fit the adapter’s limits.
Historical WebKit prototype documentation warned that a WebGPU error might cause a crash. Treat that as a historical warning, not a current guarantee: modern browsers should report errors, but a reproducible crash still belongs in a browser bug report with a minimal test case and version details.

7. Safari-specific checks on Apple Silicon
Verify whether WebGPU is enabled in the release
Safari’s WebGPU behavior is release-sensitive. WebKit’s demonstration instructions require Safari Technology Preview 92 or later and enabling Develop > Experimental Features > WebGPU. On Safari versions that expose the flag, turn on the Develop menu in Safari > Settings > Advanced, then enable the WebGPU experimental feature and relaunch or reload the page. A production Safari release may expose WebGPU by default, expose it behind a flag, or differ by macOS build; check the current release rather than assuming the Technology Preview instructions apply unchanged.
Best Value
Keep macOS and Safari current
Apple’s Safari troubleshooting guidance puts updating macOS and Safari among the first-line remedies for malfunctioning pages. Install available system updates, restart Safari, and retest the minimal page. This is particularly important after a GPU-process failure or an OS graphics update.
Cross-test the same page in Chrome
Run the identical URL, build and GPU workload in current Chrome on the same Mac. A WebKit report recorded pipeline-creation failures in Safari 26.6 on macOS 26.5 with an Apple M3 Max while the same application worked in Chrome; the issue was later marked fixed. This kind of cross-browser result narrows the fault to a browser implementation or release and prevents unnecessary rewrites of working application code. It is not evidence that Chrome will always succeed or that Safari is universally broken.
8. A repeatable troubleshooting procedure
- Record the environment. Write down the Mac chip and model, macOS build, browser version, exact URL and origin, and the full console text.
- Run a minimal sample. Confirm that a tiny page reaches
navigator.gpu, adapter, device and a clear canvas before loading your framework, shaders or assets. - Fix the context. Use HTTPS or
http://localhost; remove insecure iframe or sandbox variables and verifywindow.isSecureContext. - Check Chrome acceleration. Enable Use graphics acceleration when available, relaunch, and inspect
chrome://gpufor hardware acceleration, blocklists and GPU-process crashes. - Request an unconstrained adapter. Call
requestAdapter()without optional preferences, required features or limits. If it returnsnull, continue with browser, blocklist and OS checks. - Add requirements incrementally. Test each feature, limit and power preference against
adapter.featuresandadapter.limits. - Create one device and instrument it. Attach
device.lost, install theuncapturederrorlistener, and use narrow error scopes around validation-sensitive work. - Configure and render. Use the preferred canvas format, recreate resources after loss, and verify command submission.
- Compare Safari and Chrome. On Safari, check the release’s WebGPU setting and update macOS/Safari. A difference on the same Mac is valuable diagnostic evidence.
- Recover from process failure. Reload the page or restart the browser after repeated GPU-process crashes, then preserve the captured logs if the failure returns.
9. Common symptoms and targeted fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Targeted action |
|---|---|---|
navigator.gpu is undefined |
Unsupported or outdated browser, insecure context, disabled implementation or restricted embedding. | Use current Chrome or a Safari release with WebGPU exposed; move to HTTPS or localhost; test as a top-level page. |
requestAdapter() returns null |
No suitable adapter, blocklist, GPU process problem or excessive requirements. | Remove constraints, inspect chrome://gpu, update/restart, and retry a minimal sample. |
requestDevice() fails |
Unsupported required feature/limit or a transient platform failure. | Compare requirements with adapter capabilities and request only confirmed features. |
| Device is lost during rendering | Transient browser resource management, driver/OS update, reset or application shutdown. | Inspect device.lost; rebuild the complete device resource graph unless the loss was intentional. |
| Pipeline creation fails only in Safari | WebKit release-specific implementation or validation defect. | Capture error scopes and event-listener output, update Safari/macOS, and cross-test the same build in Chrome. |
| Browser closes or GPU process repeatedly crashes | Browser/GPU-process defect, blocklisted path or a trigger in the workload. | Reload or restart, reduce to a minimal reproducer, compare browsers, and report versions and chrome://gpu status. |
| No visible output but no initialization error | Canvas size, render-pass setup, pipeline state or missing submission. | Verify context configuration, command encoding, pass termination, queue submission and resize handling. |
10. What to include in a useful bug report
Browser and GPU bugs are much easier to reproduce when the report contains:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Mac model and Apple chip generation; macOS version and build.
- Exact browser name, channel and version, plus whether Safari WebGPU was enabled through Develop > Experimental Features.
- Secure origin, reproduction URL if public, and whether the issue occurs in a fresh profile or private window.
- The smallest HTML, JavaScript and WGSL sample that still fails.
- Console output from adapter/device creation, error scopes,
uncapturederroranddevice.lost. - For Chrome, the relevant
chrome://gpufeature status, blocklist notes and GPU-process messages. - Whether current Chrome succeeds on the same Mac and whether reducing required features or limits changes the result.
Do not report a one-off crash as a universal Apple Silicon limitation. WebGPU and Safari/WebKit change quickly, and a fixed bug may remain in an older installed release.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an M-series Mac need a discrete graphics card for WebGPU?
No separate GPU requirement is established here. Apple Silicon’s integrated GPU can expose WebGPU when the browser, secure context, blocklist state and requested capabilities permit it; an absent adapter should be diagnosed through those checks first.
Why does the same WebGPU app work in Chrome but fail in Safari?
Safari and Chrome use different WebKit and Chromium implementations, release schedules and diagnostics. A same-machine difference can indicate a Safari/WebKit-specific defect or feature gap; capture a minimal reproducer, update Safari/macOS, and compare the exact versions.
Should I keep retrying requestAdapter() until it succeeds?
No. Repeated retries do not add an adapter. Remove unnecessary constraints, correct the secure context, inspect browser graphics status and retry after updating or restarting only when there is evidence of a transient browser/GPU-process failure.
