If Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 crashes at startup, first install the current game, Windows, graphics, and (on affected Intel Core Ultra systems) Intel NPU updates, then reboot. For a Fatal Error that appears before the menu, the developer specifically points to the Intel NPU driver on some hardware. For a Continue failure, quit to the menu and load the campaign save through Load Level instead of continuing the most recent Level Select save. A frame-rate drop limited to the Nurgle Nightmare campaign section is a known game issue scheduled for a hotfix, not proof that your entire PC is failing.
The remaining stutter and low-FPS cases need a controlled comparison against the published requirements. Change one graphics setting at a time, record where the problem occurs, and keep the game updated before trying workarounds. The steps below separate a launch-wide crash from a campaign bug, a save-selection problem, and ordinary hardware or settings limits.

Identify the symptom before changing settings
The fastest fix depends on when Boltgun 2 fails. Use this triage table to choose the relevant section instead of applying unrelated tweaks.

Write down the exact level, checkpoint, graphics preset, resolution, approximate frame-rate behavior, and whether a restart changes the result. Those details distinguish a reproducible game bug from a machine that is consistently overloaded.

Check the PC targets Steam publishes
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 released for Windows on Steam on October 14, 2026. It is a single-player DirectX 12 game developed by Auroch Digital and published by Big Fan Games and Devolver Digital. Steam lists the following configurations and describes both as 1080p/60 FPS targets at their respective quality levels.

These are Steam’s published targets, not a guarantee of a locked 60 FPS in every scene. Check the exact CPU model, GPU model and video memory, installed RAM, Windows edition, DirectX 12 support, and free disk space. A system below minimum can still start with reduced settings, but it has less headroom for demanding scenes and may require an upgrade. The unusual processor ordering in Steam’s table is reproduced exactly; do not infer that one listed processor is universally faster than another from the words minimum and recommended alone.
What to verify in Windows
- Open Settings > System > About to confirm the processor, installed RAM, and Windows edition.
- Press Windows + R, enter
dxdiag, and check the DirectX version on the System tab. The game requires DirectX 12 support. - Open Task Manager > Performance while the game is closed to identify the GPU model and available memory.
- In File Explorer, confirm that the drive containing the game has at least 13 GB free and additional working room for Windows and Steam.
Update the game and system before troubleshooting
Early builds can contain fixes for issues that cannot be solved by changing an in-game slider. In Steam, open Library, right-click Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2, choose Properties, and open Updates. Leave the game set to receive updates, allow any pending download to finish, and then restart Steam. Install available Windows updates through Settings > Windows Update. Restart Windows after updates rather than only closing the game.

Keep a simple before-and-after note: game build shown by Steam, Windows version, graphics-driver version, NPU-driver version when applicable, and whether the same action still fails. This prevents repeated tests with an unchanged environment.
Fix a Fatal Error or crash on startup
A crash before the main menu is different from a frame-rate problem inside a level. Auroch Digital says the Fatal Error has appeared on specific hardware such as Intel Core Ultra CPUs and recommends updating the Intel NPU Driver for Windows. The developer also has a game-side fix, so an updated game build is part of the remedy.
Use this order
- Close Boltgun 2 and Steam.
- In Steam, check the game’s Properties > Updates page and let all available game updates install.
- Download and install the current Intel NPU Driver for Windows from Intel if your system uses an affected Intel Core Ultra processor. Follow Intel’s installer prompts.
- Restart Windows. A restart is required so the newly installed driver is loaded before the game starts.
- Launch Boltgun 2 without changing launch options or registry settings. Test whether the main menu opens.
- If the Fatal Error remains, record the CPU model, NPU-driver version, graphics-driver version, Windows version, and the exact point of failure for a developer bug report.
Do not treat this procedure as a universal fix for every crash. If your processor is not an affected model, the NPU step may not apply; continue with the baseline checks, current GPU driver, and updated game. A launch failure that disappears after the driver update identifies a hardware-driver interaction, while a failure that occurs only in one campaign section belongs in the campaign-specific sections below.
Recover when Continue loads the wrong save or fails
The developer believes a Continue problem can occur after entering a level through Level Select. Continue may then load the most recent Level Select save instead of the campaign save you expected. This is a save-selection path, not a GPU performance fault.

- When Continue fails to load the expected campaign, quit back to the game’s main menu rather than repeatedly selecting Continue.
- Choose Load Level.
- Select the save belonging to the campaign run you want to resume, not the most recent save created through Level Select.
- Load that campaign save and check whether the level opens normally.
- If the menu still behaves incorrectly, fully restart the game and repeat the Load Level selection. Some players reported that a restart alone corrected the state.
Until the behavior is corrected in a game update, avoid using Level Select as a substitute for the campaign save when you intend to use Continue later. If a particular save repeatedly fails, report the route used to create it, the level name, and whether Load Level succeeds.
Handle the Nurgle Nightmare FPS drop
Auroch Digital has named an issue that causes FPS to drop during the Nurgle Nightmare campaign. The developer says a hotfix is planned. First update Boltgun 2 through Steam, then reproduce the drop in that section before changing many graphics settings.
How to tell this bug from a system-wide performance limit
- If frame rate is normal in other levels and falls only during Nurgle Nightmare, the location-specific known issue is the stronger explanation.
- If the same low frame rate appears in every level, compare your hardware and drivers with the Steam targets and use the controlled test in the next section.
- If the problem changes after an update, record the old and new game build numbers in your report.
A temporary reduction in quality or resolution may make the section more playable on a system with little headroom, but it does not correct the underlying known bug. Do not conclude that a whole PC is defective from this one campaign segment.
Work through general stutter and low FPS methodically
The official information does not identify one universal stutter setting, launch command, registry edit, shader-cache deletion, or generic FPS booster that fixes Boltgun 2. Use a controlled comparison so each result tells you something.

Run a repeatable baseline
- Choose one location that reliably shows the problem. Use the same save, camera direction, resolution, and quality preset for every test.
- Play long enough to observe both the usual frame rate and the moments when it drops. Note whether the issue is constant, occurs during movement, or appears only in a particular effect-heavy scene.
- Record the displayed resolution, quality preset, frame-rate behavior, CPU/GPU utilization if you monitor it, and whether the problem is a brief hitch or sustained low FPS.
- Change one setting or one preset at a time, then repeat the same route. Changing several options together prevents you from knowing which change mattered.
- Restore the original setting if the test does not help. Keep the configuration that improves playability without creating new visual or stability problems.
Use the settings comparison to locate the limit

Because Boltgun 2 uses DirectX 12, confirm that your GPU and driver support the required API before interpreting a settings test. Meeting the minimum entry does not guarantee 60 FPS in every scene, and a machine at the recommended entry can still encounter a game-side issue in a named campaign area.

The Trenches final purge does not end
The developer lists a bug in which the final purge in The Trenches fails to finish. Update the game before attempting repeated reloads or improvised workarounds; the issue was scheduled for a hotfix. When reporting it, include the objective text, the checkpoint or save used, and whether restarting changes the state.
Getting stuck inside the Lord of Skulls
A separate collision problem can leave a player stuck inside the Lord of Skulls. This was also listed for a hotfix. Keep the game current, note the exact location and action that caused the collision, and report whether loading the checkpoint or restarting reproduces it. Do not mistake an immobile character caused by this collision bug for a low-FPS freeze.

What not to rely on as a proven fix
No official source establishes a particular launch option, registry edit, shader-cache deletion, or generic FPS-boosting utility as a tested Boltgun 2 solution. These changes can complicate diagnosis and may remove useful evidence from a bug report. Try the documented driver, update, save-selection, and hotfix steps first. If you experiment after that, change one item, keep a record of the original value, and be prepared to restore it.
When the hardware is below minimum
If your processor, graphics card, RAM, Windows edition, DirectX support, or free storage falls below Steam’s minimum entry, treat low FPS and instability as expected possibilities rather than a confirmed game defect. Start with the lowest available quality and a reduced resolution, then run the repeatable test. If the game remains unusable, the durable remedy is hardware that meets the published targets: a system with at least the listed CPU and GPU class, 8 GB of RAM, DirectX 12 support, and 13 GB of free storage.
An upgrade should be judged against the game you actually want to run. Steam’s recommended profile targets High Quality at 1080p and 60 FPS, but it still is not a promise for every scene or future patch. Leave additional free disk space beyond the 13 GB installation requirement so Windows and Steam can update normally.
Steam Deck users
Steam lists Boltgun 2 as Verified for Steam Deck. Keep SteamOS and the game current before diagnosing a crash or performance problem. If a Continue issue appears, use the same campaign-save path: quit to the menu and select the intended save through Load Level. A drop isolated to Nurgle Nightmare should be treated as the named campaign bug until a hotfix changes the behavior, while a problem in every level should be documented with the location, preset, resolution, and reproducibility.
Prepare a useful bug report
A precise report gives the developer enough information to separate a known issue from a new one. Include:
- The symptom: startup Fatal Error, Continue failure, sustained low FPS, intermittent stutter, progression stop, or collision lock.
- Exact level, campaign, objective, checkpoint, and the action immediately before the failure.
- Whether the issue occurs everywhere or only in one location, especially whether it is limited to Nurgle Nightmare.
- CPU model, GPU model and video memory, installed RAM, Windows version, DirectX version, graphics-driver version, and Intel NPU-driver version when applicable.
- Steam game build, graphics preset, resolution, and any setting changed for the test.
- Reproduction steps in order, whether a restart helped, and whether Load Level succeeds where Continue fails.
For a performance report, distinguish a brief hitch from a sustained frame-rate reduction and state the approximate behavior rather than only saying the game feels slow. For a launch report, state whether the crash occurs before the menu every time and whether it changed after updating the game or driver.
