If Warcraft III: Reforged crashes before a usable window appears, shows a black screen, or leaves Battle.net on Play without starting, treat it as a launch failure first. Check requirements, update Windows and the graphics driver, remove overlays and other background blockers, repair the installation, and confirm the game has finished patching. If the game reaches the menu and fails only in one campaign or mission, use a content-specific path instead of repeatedly reinstalling Windows or replacing hardware.
The order matters: start with reversible checks, then repair files and patch state, and only then collect diagnostics for Blizzard support. A black screen at startup is not the same problem as a crash during a match, so record exactly when the failure occurs before changing anything.

Identify the failure stage before changing settings
Write down what happens from the moment you press Play. Blizzard’s launch-crash guidance applies when the client never draws a usable game window. A black screen or a crash after the menu has loaded follows a different troubleshooting path.

Use this low-risk troubleshooting order
- Record the symptom. Note whether the window never appears, stays black, reaches the menu, or fails only in a particular campaign or map. Copy any error text exactly.
- Verify the environment. Confirm the PC meets Blizzard’s minimum Warcraft III: Reforged requirements, install current Windows updates, and install the current graphics-driver release for the installed GPU.
- Remove blockers for a test. Close background applications and overlays, and temporarily test whether security software is preventing the client from starting.
- Bring the installation to a known patch state. Let Battle.net finish downloading updates, then use its built-in installation repair controls.
- Reproduce the original failure. Test the same launch, menu, mission, or campaign that failed. Do not switch to a different scenario and assume the issue is solved.
- Escalate with diagnostics. If the failure remains, provide DxDiag, exact reproduction steps, the error message, visible symptoms, and every fix already attempted.
These steps move from reversible software checks to file repair and finally to support escalation. They avoid unnecessary operating-system reinstalls or hardware purchases when Blizzard’s documented causes are software-related.
Confirm requirements and update the operating environment
Check the minimum requirements
Open Blizzard’s current Warcraft III: Reforged system-requirements information and compare it with the PC’s processor, memory, graphics hardware, storage, and supported Windows version. An unmet minimum requirement can produce launch errors even when another game runs correctly. Record the exact hardware and Windows edition for a support request rather than describing the computer as simply “good enough.”
Install pending Windows updates
Use Windows Update, restart when requested, and check again until no additional update is waiting. A restart matters because a partially applied operating-system component can leave the launcher or graphics stack in an inconsistent state. After the restart, try Warcraft III: Reforged before opening other demanding applications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUpdate the graphics driver
Install the current driver supplied for the GPU and Windows edition, then reboot. Blizzard lists outdated graphics drivers among common causes of launch errors. If the problem began immediately after a driver change, record that timing; it helps distinguish a driver interaction from a damaged game installation. Do not change several driver versions at once, because support will need to know which version was active when the failure occurred.

Remove programs that can block startup
Test security software without leaving protection disabled
Security software can block the game client or quarantine an installation file. Temporarily pause its protection only long enough to test one launch, using the product’s documented controls, and restore protection immediately afterward. If the game starts only while protection is paused, create a narrowly scoped exception according to the security product’s instructions and verify that the game files came from the official Battle.net installation.
Close overlays and behavior-changing utilities
Exit background applications before launching. Pay particular attention to programs that modify mouse behavior, graphics-driver settings, frame presentation, recording, chat overlays, or other in-game elements. Blizzard specifically identifies these categories as possible startup blockers. Disable one category at a time and retest so you can identify the interfering program; leaving every utility disabled makes the eventual fix harder to maintain.
Use a clean test, not a permanent sacrifice
The goal is isolation. Close the suspected overlay or utility, launch the game, and then restore it if it was not responsible. If the game fails with all optional programs closed, keep that result in your notes and move to patch and installation checks rather than repeatedly toggling the same applications.

Repair the installation and complete Battle.net patching
Let the launcher finish updating
Open Battle.net and wait for Warcraft III: Reforged to show that patching is complete. A launcher that displays Play while files are still being checked or downloaded can produce confusing start failures. If an update pauses, fails, or repeatedly resumes, capture the displayed message and the time it occurs; that is useful evidence of a patch-state problem.

Run the launcher’s installation repair
Use Battle.net’s built-in installation and repair controls for Warcraft III: Reforged. The launcher checks the installed data and replaces files it identifies as damaged or incomplete. Allow the process to finish, then start the game with overlays still closed for the first verification launch. Repairing files is preferable to deleting the installation because it preserves the existing patch channel and gives you a clear result to report.
Retest the same content
After repair, reproduce the original failure: the same launch, black-screen transition, campaign, or menu action. A successful launch to the main menu does not prove that a particular campaign file or mission is healthy. If only one scenario still fails, move to the patch-specific checks below.
Check whether a documented game defect matches the symptom
Some crashes and freezes are defects in the game build, not signs that your PC is underpowered. Blizzard’s Warcraft III: Reforged 1.36.1 patch notes document several examples: a crash in the Fall of Silvermoon caused by a visual-effects thread issue, a campaign freeze, and a crash triggered by campaign subfolders. The notes also list fixes tied to particular campaign and user-interface states.

- Empire Total War Complete Edition
- Does the failure happen only in the named campaign, mission, or screen?
- Did it begin after installing or changing campaign folders?
- Is the rest of the game playable, including the main menu or other scenarios?
- Does Battle.net report that the installation is fully updated?
A match between the symptom and a documented fix means updating to the applicable build is more relevant than changing hardware. If your installation is current and the same issue persists, include the mission name, trigger, and patch number in the support report so Blizzard can distinguish a known regression from a local file problem.
Black-screen troubleshooting
A black screen before a usable game window is a startup failure. Follow the general sequence, but keep the display symptom precise: note whether the monitor reports a signal, whether audio plays, whether the window responds to input, and whether the client eventually closes.
- Close overlays and utilities that alter graphics presentation, mouse input, recording, or driver settings.
- Install pending Windows and graphics-driver updates, then restart.
- Test security software as a possible client blocker and restore protection after the test.
- Complete Battle.net patching and run the installation repair tool.
- Launch again with optional background applications closed.
If the black screen remains after these checks, do not describe it merely as “a crash.” Tell support that a window appears but never renders a usable image, and state whether the failure occurs on every launch or only after selecting a particular campaign or screen.
When the crash occurs after the menu loads
Crash while navigating menus
Confirm the game is patched, then test with overlays and graphics-driver customization utilities closed. A menu-only failure can be tied to a specific user-interface state covered by a game update, so compare the exact menu action and timing with the current patch notes. Include the menu name and the last visible control in your report.
Crash during a campaign or mission
Record the campaign, mission, checkpoint, and action immediately preceding the crash. If every other campaign works, avoid broad system changes until you have checked for a campaign-specific defect or a damaged installation. A campaign folder change is especially relevant because Blizzard has documented a crash caused by campaign subfolders.
Crash during a match
Separate a match-only failure from a launch failure. Note whether the client reaches the game successfully, how long the match runs, and whether the crash follows a repeatable action. Start with the same patch, driver, overlay, and installation checks, but do not report it as “won’t start” if the game consistently reaches a playable match.
Choose the next fix by scope, recency, and reversibility
| What changed or repeats | Interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Every launch fails, with no usable window | Broad startup problem | Requirements, Windows and graphics-driver updates, blocker isolation, then installation repair. |
| Only one campaign or mission fails | Content-specific problem is more likely | Check patch notes and campaign-folder changes before system-wide changes. |
| Failure starts immediately after a patch | Patch state or a newly exposed game defect is possible | Complete updating, repair files, and compare the symptom with the current notes. |
| Failure starts immediately after a driver change | Driver interaction is possible | Record the driver timing, install the current supported driver, and provide the version to support. |
| Failure disappears when an overlay is closed | A background application is blocking or modifying startup | Identify that application and configure its supported game exception or leave it closed while playing. |
This framework prevents an irreversible step from hiding the cause. Settings and overlay tests are easy to undo; reinstalling the operating system or replacing hardware is not a first-line response to the software causes Blizzard lists.
Prepare a support-quality report
When local checks do not resolve the problem, provide enough detail for another person to reproduce it. Blizzard’s common-issues guidance requests a DxDiag file, a list of troubleshooting already performed, a description of what was happening when the error occurred, the exact error message, and what the failure looks like.
Include these facts
- System: Windows edition and update status, processor, memory, graphics adapter, and graphics-driver version.
- Game state: Warcraft III: Reforged patch version shown by Battle.net and whether the launcher completed patching or file repair.
- Reproduction: the exact sequence from pressing Play to the failure, including campaign, mission, map, menu, or match details.
- Visible result: no window, black screen, crash to desktop, freeze, Battle.net returning to Play, or a specific error message copied verbatim.
- Scope and timing: whether every launch fails, whether other content works, and whether the problem began after a patch, driver update, security-software change, or campaign-folder change.
- Attempts: requirements check, Windows update, graphics-driver update, overlay and background-app isolation, security-software test, installation repair, and the result of each.
Attach DxDiag correctly
Generate the DxDiag report on the affected Windows installation and attach the resulting file to the support ticket or technical-support forum post. Do not paste a shortened summary in place of the file; the report contains the hardware, driver, and operating-system details support needs to compare with the launch symptom. Remove unrelated personal information only if doing so does not delete the hardware and driver sections.
What not to do first
- Do not assume a black screen is the same as a crash during a campaign; the support path depends on the stage.
- Do not keep security protection disabled after a test. Restore it and use a narrowly scoped exception only when the security product supports one.
- Do not change drivers, overlays, Windows settings, and game files simultaneously. One controlled change produces useful evidence; many changes obscure the cause.
- Do not reinstall Windows or replace hardware before checking the documented software causes and repairing the game installation.
- Do not omit a campaign name, error message, or recent update from a support request. Those details can point to a content-specific defect rather than a general launch problem.
When to stop local troubleshooting
Escalate after the PC meets the requirements, Windows and the graphics driver are current, blockers have been tested, Battle.net has completed patching, and installation repair has finished without changing the failure. Include the DxDiag file and the complete reproduction record. Blizzard Technical Support notes that technical issues are frustrating to diagnose alone; a precise report gives support a way to separate a local configuration problem from a defect already fixed or being investigated in the game build.
