Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen a Steam game closes immediately on Linux, fix the graphics stack before changing Proton settings. Confirm whether the game is native Linux or a Windows build running through Proton, verify the Vulkan loader, vendor driver and 32-bit libraries, check which GPU is active, then make Steam’s runtime and Proton choice consistent. If every Vulkan application fails, the problem is system-wide; if one game fails while others work, investigate that game’s compatibility report, launch options and prefix.
Start by identifying exactly what is failing
A return to the Steam Play button, a window that disappears during startup, a Vulkan initialization message, or a missing-library error can have different causes. Write down the game, the exact message, whether Steam returns immediately, and whether another Vulkan game launches. This small record prevents you from changing several variables at once.

Native Linux build or Windows build through Proton?
Steam can install a native Linux build, or it can run a Windows build with Proton. Proton is Valve’s compatibility software for Windows games on Linux; it is not a replacement for a working Linux graphics stack. Ubuntu’s Steam documentation explains how to configure Proton and directs users to ProtonDB for compatibility information: Ubuntu’s Proton configuration guide.
If the game has a native Linux option, first test that build without forcing Proton. A native title has its own Linux executable and libraries, so a Proton prefix or Windows launch argument cannot repair it. Conversely, a Windows title may need a compatible Proton release, a particular launch option or an anti-cheat configuration after Vulkan itself is working.

Use the scope of the failure as your first branch
- Every Vulkan game fails: prioritize the Vulkan loader, the vendor driver, 32-bit graphics libraries and GPU selection.
- Only one game fails: keep the system stack as the baseline and investigate that title’s ProtonDB reports, runtime, launch options, anti-cheat status and prefix.
- Steam itself will not start: repair the client and its OpenGL installation before changing an individual game’s prefix.
- Only a dedicated-GPU setup fails: check whether the game is actually using the integrated GPU or an unavailable render-offload path.
Verify the Vulkan stack before changing Proton
Vulkan applications need three related pieces: a loader, an implementation supplied by the GPU vendor, and the correct architecture of graphics libraries. ArchWiki summarizes the requirement directly: “To run a Vulkan application, you will need to install the vulkan-icd-loader package … as well as Vulkan drivers for your graphics card.” Its Vulkan page is at ArchWiki’s Vulkan documentation.
Install the driver supplied for your GPU and distribution
Use your distribution’s documented package manager to install the current Vulkan driver for the GPU vendor. Do not copy an Arch package name into Ubuntu, Fedora or another distribution, and do not assume that a package installed on the host is automatically visible inside a Flatpak Steam environment. The package names and repository channels vary by distribution and by vendor.
Valve’s Proton requirements note that some newer Steam Play titles need cutting-edge drivers. The same guidance recommends an up-to-date NVIDIA driver or Mesa Vulkan drivers, including the 32-bit Mesa companion where it is required: Valve’s Proton requirements. Treat that advice as a minimum compatibility check, not as a guarantee that every game will run.
Install the 32-bit loader and graphics libraries
Many Windows games executed by Proton still use 32-bit components even on a 64-bit Linux installation. ArchWiki specifically identifies lib32-vulkan-icd-loader for 32-bit applications. On other distributions, look for the equivalent multilib or i386 package rather than installing that exact name.
For Mesa systems, Valve’s requirements page identifies mesa-vulkan-drivers and its :i386 counterpart where appropriate. NVIDIA systems need the matching 32-bit libraries for the installed driver branch. A 64-bit Vulkan test can succeed while a Proton game fails if only the 32-bit side is missing.
Run a Vulkan diagnostic
Run vulkaninfo when your distribution provides it. A healthy report should enumerate an instance, a physical device and the Vulkan properties exposed by that device. A loader error, an empty device list or a report that names the wrong GPU is evidence to fix the graphics stack before testing Proton versions.

Also run a basic OpenGL check. Steam Support says that most Linux startup problems are caused by incorrect or missing OpenGL drivers and recommends testing a 32-bit OpenGL program and using glxinfo on Ubuntu: Steam Support’s Linux startup troubleshooting. OpenGL and Vulkan are separate APIs, but a broken vendor installation can affect both and can stop Steam before a game is involved.

Check which GPU Steam and the game are using
Hybrid laptops commonly contain an integrated GPU and a discrete GPU. A game may launch on the integrated device, while the Vulkan feature level or performance you expected is available only on the discrete device. The reverse can also happen: a discrete-driver or offload problem can make the integrated GPU the only working choice.
Confirm the active renderer
Use glxinfo to see the active OpenGL renderer, and use nvidia-smi on NVIDIA hardware to check whether a process is using the NVIDIA device. Ubuntu’s dedicated-GPU guidance explains this check and the use of NVIDIA environment variables as Steam launch options: Ubuntu’s dedicated-GPU documentation.
Ubuntu’s Steam troubleshooting guidance also recommends trying the integrated GPU when a dedicated GPU fails: Ubuntu’s Steam troubleshooting guide. This is a diagnostic branch, not a universal performance recommendation. If the game launches on the integrated GPU, the failure points toward the discrete driver, render offload or the game’s required feature level.
Use the offload syntax appropriate to the driver
Valve’s Steam Runtime documentation describes two common paths. NVIDIA PRIME render offload uses __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1; Mesa DRI offload uses DRI_PRIME=1: Valve’s Steam Linux Runtime known issues.

Enter the variable in the game’s Steam launch-options field using the syntax documented for your distribution and driver. For example, a driver-specific command may prefix the game command with __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 or DRI_PRIME=1. Do not use both blindly, and do not assume that a variable intended for one vendor works for another. After changing the option, verify the renderer again and test the same game.
When the wrong GPU is selected by a container
Steam’s runtime container can select an unintended Vulkan driver or GPU. Valve documents this class of issue, along with incompatibilities involving older proprietary NVIDIA drivers, in the Steam Runtime notes. If the host tools show the correct device but the game still reports a different one, compare the Steam installation type and runtime behavior rather than repeatedly reinstalling Proton.
Keep Steam’s runtime and libraries coherent
Steam can use its own runtime libraries, host-system libraries or a containerized combination, depending on the client and game. ArchWiki warns that mixing Steam runtime libraries with system libraries can cause binary incompatibility, crashes, hangs, silent returns to the Play button and audio problems: ArchWiki’s Steam troubleshooting guide.

Update and restart before replacing files
- Update Steam through the client or the package method used by your distribution.
- Exit Steam completely, including any background client process, and start it again.
- Retest a known working or simple Vulkan title before changing the failing game’s prefix.
- Remove ad-hoc library copies or symlinks you added to make one game start; they can break another title or the client itself.
If Steam itself fails to launch, follow Steam’s Linux client troubleshooting path first. A game prefix cannot repair a client that cannot initialize its own graphics and runtime libraries.
Native package and Flatpak are separate diagnostic environments
A distribution package and a Flatpak Steam installation do not necessarily see the same host libraries, permissions or runtime components. If Vulkan works in a host diagnostic but fails only in one Steam packaging format, compare the two environments and use the packaging format’s documented runtime and driver integration. Avoid copying host libraries into a container as a shortcut; that recreates the mixed-library condition that causes silent exits and hangs.
Select and test Proton deliberately
Only use Proton for a Windows game. Start with a current stable Proton release, then test Proton Experimental if the game’s compatibility reports indicate that it contains a fix or regression workaround. Ubuntu confirms that Proton is optional for native Linux games and points users to ProtonDB for compatibility reports: Ubuntu’s troubleshooting guidance and its Proton configuration guide.

Change one variable at a time
- Open the game’s Steam properties and select the compatibility setting for a current stable Proton release.
- Launch the game once and record the result and any exact error text.
- If the game’s ProtonDB reports identify a known working release, test that release next.
- Test Proton Experimental only when the reports or current game discussions make it a reasonable candidate.
- Keep the driver, GPU and runtime unchanged while comparing Proton versions.
A Proton change cannot install a missing Vulkan ICD, add a 32-bit driver library or make an old GPU expose a newer feature level. If vulkaninfo fails, return to the graphics-stack checks instead of cycling through compatibility tools.

Use compatibility reports as evidence, not as a substitute for diagnosis
ProtonDB reports and the game’s Steam discussions can reveal required launch arguments, anti-cheat limitations, regressions and a known-good Proton release. Compare the report’s distribution, GPU and driver context with your machine. A workaround reported for one GPU or driver branch may not apply to another.
Record the exact Proton version, launch option and result. This makes it possible to undo a change that causes a new failure and prevents several unrelated workarounds from being applied at once.
Separate system-wide Vulkan failures from one-game failures
When all Vulkan titles fail
Start with the loader, vendor driver, 32-bit libraries and active GPU. A failure in vulkaninfo, an empty physical-device list or an OpenGL renderer that falls back to software indicates a host graphics problem. Fix that baseline, restart Steam and retest before touching prefixes.
If the host tools work but every Steam Vulkan title fails, inspect the Steam runtime and packaging environment. The container may be selecting a different ICD or GPU than the host. Update Steam, remove conflicting library overrides and verify that the 32-bit runtime components are installed and visible to the chosen Steam installation.

Leave the working graphics stack unchanged. Check that title’s ProtonDB reports, Steam discussions, anti-cheat requirements and launch options. Test a supported Proton release one at a time, then consider whether the game’s prefix has become inconsistent. Recreating a prefix can remove its per-game configuration and saves stored there, so back up any required data before taking that step.

When one native Linux title fails
Do not force Proton merely because the error mentions Vulkan. Check the native build’s documented requirements, its selected GPU and whether the same Vulkan device works in another native application. A native binary may have a game-specific dependency or a regression unrelated to Proton.

Know when software cannot solve the problem
A driver can expose only the Vulkan capabilities supported by the GPU. If the game requires a feature level that the hardware cannot provide, no Proton version, launch option or library replacement can add that capability. Compare the game’s Vulkan requirement with the implementation reported by vulkaninfo before buying replacement hardware.
Valve’s Proton requirements and ArchWiki’s Vulkan prerequisites provide the relevant baseline for this decision: Proton requirements and Vulkan prerequisites. A replacement should be described as a Vulkan-compatible graphics card, but the exact model must be selected against the game’s required feature level, the driver branch available for your distribution and the 32-bit support needed by Proton.

- On a hybrid laptop, test the integrated GPU and then the documented PRIME or Mesa offload variable for the discrete GPU.
- Update and restart Steam; remove improvised library overrides and keep the runtime coherent.
- For a Windows game, test one stable Proton release, then a report-supported alternative or Experimental.
- Read the game’s ProtonDB and Steam discussion reports for launch arguments, anti-cheat requirements and regressions.
- If only that title fails, investigate its prefix and game-specific configuration; if all titles fail, return to the system graphics stack.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need 32-bit Vulkan drivers on a 64-bit Linux system?
Often, yes, for Windows games running through Proton. Install the 32-bit Vulkan loader and matching vendor libraries supplied for your distribution. A successful 64-bit vulkaninfo command does not prove that Proton’s 32-bit components are present.
Why does changing Proton not fix a Vulkan error?
Proton translates and runs a Windows game; it does not supply a missing host Vulkan loader, vendor driver, 32-bit library or unsupported hardware feature. Repair those prerequisites first.
Why is Steam using the integrated GPU?
Hybrid systems may select the integrated device by default or fail to initialize the discrete device. Check the renderer with glxinfo, use nvidia-smi for NVIDIA hardware, and apply the PRIME or Mesa offload syntax documented for your driver.
Should I use Proton for a native Linux game?
No. Test the native build first. Proton is intended for Windows games, and forcing it can introduce a separate compatibility layer that obscures a native dependency or driver problem.
