When a VRM character clips through its legs, arms, or fingers after motion capture, first find out whether the pose estimate is wrong. Then check retargeting and alignment. Only after those checks should you edit the motion or the avatar: a pose that works on one body can intersect another body’s proportions or clothing. There is no documented universal fix that automatically repairs all three kinds of clipping on every VRM model.
What kind of problem are you seeing?
“Clipping” can describe several different failures, and the right fix depends on which one you have. A foot passing through the floor is a contact problem; a hand passing through the torso may be a pose or body-proportion problem; fingers that appear stiff or collapsed may not have been captured at all.

- Wrong limb position: the source estimate may be inaccurate, or the source and target bones may be mapped or aligned incorrectly.
- Foot-floor artifacts: foot contact, drift, toe motion, or knee behavior may need targeted cleanup.
- Body or clothing intersections: a plausible motion may still pass through the target avatar’s torso, skirt, accessories, or other geometry.
- Unarticulated fingers: the capture workflow may not include finger motion, leaving no finger animation to retarget.
Work through the checks in that order. Editing the avatar before verifying the animation can hide the symptom without correcting its cause.

Review the source animation on its own, before applying it to the VRM character. Scrub through the frames where the artifact appears and check whether the performer is fully in view, whether a limb crosses in front of the body, and whether the performer turns away or otherwise hides a joint.

Rokoko’s Vision 3.0 documentation says that occluded limbs are tracked less reliably and that a performer outside the frame reduces tracking quality. If the estimate has put a knee, elbow, or hand in the wrong place, retargeting settings cannot recover the visual information that was hidden. For another recording, full-body framing and clear visibility are sensible ways to reduce this risk, though they do not guarantee a perfect reconstruction.
Check fingers separately
Rokoko states that Vision 3.0 does not capture finger motion. An arm pose can therefore look acceptable while the hand lacks articulated fingers. The vendor names Smartgloves II as a finger-capture option for future recordings; gloves cannot add missing finger data to a video that has already been processed. If the existing animation has no finger movement, treat that as a capture limitation rather than a retargeting defect.
Verify bone mapping, scale, and pose alignment
If the source motion looks plausible but the VRM result has large limb errors, inspect the retarget setup before changing the avatar mesh. In Rokoko’s Blender retargeting guide, the workflow imports the animated source, selects the source and target armatures, builds a bone list, and checks the mapping. Confirm that each source bone is assigned to the intended target bone; do not assume automatic matching has chosen correctly.

- Import the animated source and select the source and target armatures in the retargeting workflow.
- Build and inspect the bone list. Correct missing or wrongly assigned bones.
- Check that the armatures are aligned in a suitable pose. Rokoko’s guide emphasizes that both armatures should be in the same pose for correct retargeting.
- Review scale. Use Auto Scale only if needed, or resize the armatures manually.
- Retarget again and inspect the same problem frames before proceeding to mesh or curve edits.
If the feet float or move above the ground, or the hips appear fixed in place, the guide suggests trying Auto Scale off or changing the pose option to Current. These are troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed fixes; compare the result on your own animation.
Separate floor contact from body intersections
For foot-floor problems, Rokoko documents locomotion cleanup controls for editable left- and right-foot lock keys, knee-pop smoothing, and toe-bend options. Its Drift Fix filter adjusts root drift so the start and end locations match when the performer returns to the same physical position. The guide describes the filters as experimental and says results vary by project.
These controls target selected contact and motion issues. They are not general-purpose repairs for a thigh passing through a skirt, an arm crossing the torso, or a hand intersecting an accessory. If the feet are planted correctly but a limb still passes through the avatar, move on to checking the pose and the target character.

Correct clipping that remains on the VRM character
Once the source estimate and retarget setup look plausible, inspect the target model at the exact frames where the mesh intersects. Ask whether a target bone is mapped incorrectly, whether the model’s rest pose or scale differs from the source, or whether a motion that is valid on the source body simply does not fit this avatar’s proportions, clothes, or accessories.

The last is specific to the character. It may require editing motion curves or individual poses, or revisiting the character’s rig or mesh. A hand that clips only when the arm crosses a broad torso, for example, may need a different arm path for that avatar even when the underlying capture is reasonable.
The official documentation described here does not establish a standardized VRM clipping solver or an automatic repair that works across arbitrary meshes. Make corrections at the point where the cause lives: fix the mapping for a bone assignment error, adjust the animation for a motion-to-proportions collision, or revise the avatar setup when its rig or geometry is the problem.

Check the animation format and target application
VRM Animation is a glTF-based humanoid animation format. The VRM Animation specification describes humanoid bone animation intended for use with VRM models, but applications that support the draft may behave differently from the officially released specification. Before delivery, check which VRM Animation version and importer or runtime the target application supports.
Rokoko’s video workflow and Blender retargeting workflow are separate stages: the video is processed into animation, then that animation is edited or exported. Rokoko documents FBX and BVH export, while VRM Animation is a different interchange path. Confirm that the application receiving the delivered file supports the format and version you actually export; support at one stage does not guarantee compatibility at another.

That normalization is a model workflow step, not a documented fix for incorrect retargeting or mesh intersections.
