How to Fix VLC Audio or Video Out of Sync on Mac

Use VLC’s audio delay controls to correct a steady lip-sync mismatch on Mac, adjust subtitle timing separately, and investigate file-specific problems or gradual drift.

If VLC audio is late, advance it; if it is early, delay it. During playback, use VLC’s documented J and K audio-sync shortcuts, or enter an offset in the Track Synchronization control. First check whether the mismatch is actually between subtitles and speech: VLC adjusts subtitle timing separately.

Check what is out of sync

Play a short section with clear dialogue and compare speech with the speaker’s mouth movements. Note whether the sound consistently arrives before or after the picture, and whether the gap stays about the same or grows over time. Then compare the subtitles with the dialogue.

  • If speech and picture disagree, adjust audio synchronization.
  • If speech matches the picture but subtitle text does not match the dialogue, adjust subtitle synchronization instead.

VLC documents audio/video and subtitle timing as separate controls in its VLC Desktop 3.0 synchronization documentation.

Adjust VLC audio timing on Mac

While the video is playing, try VLC’s documented audio-delay shortcuts. Make a small adjustment, then replay the same dialogue to see whether lip sync improves.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA) | USB audio adapter; no drivers needed; for Windows & Mac; 3.5mm headphone & mic jacks; usb to 3.5mm jack audio adapter
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
  • Audio is late or behind the picture: press J to move it earlier.
  • Audio is early or ahead of the picture: press K to delay it.

These shortcuts change synchronization during playback; they do not modify or repair the media file. VideoLAN’s guide is for VLC desktop generally rather than a current Mac-specific menu walkthrough, so shortcut behavior or menu labels can vary with the installed build and its key configuration.

Use a numerical offset if the shortcuts do not work

VideoLAN’s desktop guide describes entering an audio offset in the Track Synchronization control. Its generic desktop path is Tools > Track Synchronization > Synchronization, but that exact path may not match the menus in your Mac build. Look for the equivalent Track Synchronization control in the installed app, or consult its help and preferences to find the actual label and shortcut settings.

Fix subtitle delay separately

If dialogue matches the picture but subtitles appear too early or too late, use VLC’s subtitle synchronization adjustment rather than changing audio delay. The same VideoLAN documentation describes separate subtitle timing shortcuts and a numerical subtitle offset in the synchronization controls. Check the subtitle against spoken dialogue after each small change.

If the correction does not hold

The pattern of the problem can help you choose what to check next. This is a practical way to narrow down possibilities, not a formal VLC diagnostic test.

Apple USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter | 1 USB Port, Music, Podcasts, Travel
  • The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
  • Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.
What you notice What to check
A steady audio/video gap with one file Try a playback adjustment; if that file repeatedly needs the same correction, inspect Audio desynchronisation compensation.
The gap grows as playback continues Consider a timing drift rather than a constant offset. VLC’s clock documentation explains that stream synchronization involves clocks that can drift, but it does not diagnose a particular Mac or file.
The issue appears with multiple files or output setups Check whether the pattern changes when using another audio output. VideoLAN’s FAQ suggests trying a different audio output plugin, but the cited guidance does not specify current macOS options.
Playback is choppy as well as mistimed Investigate playback smoothness separately. VideoLAN notes that framedropping can make playback choppier under some CPU-overload conditions; it is not a guaranteed synchronization fix.

Check a file-specific compensation setting

For a recurring problem tied to one input file, VideoLAN’s VLC Media Player FAQ points to Audio desynchronisation compensation. Check the setting’s effect with the affected file before relying on it. A permanent global offset may change playback for other files too.

Understand gradual drift without assuming its cause

A correction that works near the start but becomes wrong later is different from a fixed offset. VideoLAN’s clock-architecture documentation describes VLC 4.0’s synchronization model and says, “The clock is the element that manages the synchronisation of all ES, notably audio and video (+subtitles) synchronization.” It also explains that clocks may drift. That describes a possible mechanism, not proof of what is causing a particular issue in VLC on Mac.

SABRENT USB-C to 3.5mm Audio Adapter, USB Sound Card, Mono Mic (AU-UCMA)
  • USB TYPE-C CONNECTOR, SO CHECK YOUR PORT FIRST: The AU-UCMA ends in a USB Type-C plug on an integrated cable and connects to the USB-C port on a laptop, desktop, or tablet. It does not fit a rectangular USB-A port; if that is the port you have, our USB Type-A Sound Adapter (AU-MMSA) is the model to buy instead.
  • STEREO HEADPHONE OUT, MONO MICROPHONE IN: Two separate 3.5mm analog jacks, one stereo output for headphones or powered speakers and one microphone input. The microphone jack is MONO, a single channel, not stereo, so it suits a headset or a desktop mic rather than a stereo source.
  • 24-BIT/96KHZ AUDIO, NOT 16-BIT/44KHZ: Input and output both run at 16/24-bit and up to a 96KHz sampling rate, where many USB audio adapters stop at 16-bit and 44 or 48KHz. This is an external sound card with its own audio chip, not a passive cable.
  • PLUG AND PLAY ON WINDOWS, MACOS, AND LINUX: No drivers to install and no external power needed, since the adapter is bus-powered and uses dynamic power-saving modes. It also supports iPadOS/iOS and Android, though mobile support depends on the host device's USB-C port, so check your phone or tablet first.
  • ALUMINUM SHELL, BUILT TO TRAVEL: A lightweight aluminum alloy body gives you durability and heat dissipation, and the USB Type-C cable is integrated, so there is nothing extra to carry or lose. Register your product on the manufacturer's website for support and warranty registration.
