If the Vasya Run demo crashes, stutters, shows a black or unrendered window, or ignores a controller, start by confirming that you installed the separate Windows demo rather than the parent game. In Steam, the demo is app ID 5368000, uses the executable Vasya Run.exe in the Vasya Run Demo directory, and is marked as having partial controller support. Let Steam finish any pending update, restart Steam, verify the demo files, then test one change at a time while recording the result. No single developer-published fix has been documented for every crash, performance, or input failure, so isolating the exact failure stage is more reliable than applying random launch options.
Confirm that you have the right Steam app
The first troubleshooting mistake is treating the demo and the parent Vasya Run listing as the same installation. They are separate Steam apps. The parent page is marked “Coming soon,” while the playable Windows demo has its own app ID and depot record.

SteamDB records a public build updated in October 2026. It also lists a 10.47 GiB download and 11.37 GiB installed size. Those figures are useful checks: a nearly full drive, an interrupted download, or a folder much smaller than the recorded installation can indicate that the depot did not complete. They are SteamDB records for the demo, not a promise that every machine will use exactly that amount of free space.

Do these checks before changing graphics or input
- Wait for Steam to finish. Open Downloads and allow the Vasya Run demo update or installation to reach completion. Do not launch while Steam is still patching it.
- Restart Steam. Exit Steam from its menu, wait for the client to close, and start it again. This clears a client session that may still be holding an old build state.
- Check free storage. Keep more free space than the recorded 11.37 GiB installed size so Steam can unpack and replace files during an update. A download of 10.47 GiB is not the same as the final disk requirement.
- Confirm the operating system and drivers. Record your Windows version and graphics-driver version before troubleshooting. If the issue changes after a driver update, that change is useful evidence; it is not proof that the driver was the original cause.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB and virtual devices. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, and the controller you are testing. Extra gamepads, remapping devices, and virtual controllers can make it unclear which device is receiving input.
Verify the demo files in Steam
File verification is the safest first repair for an incomplete or corrupted depot. It is a check, not a guaranteed Vasya Run fix: no universal developer-authored repair procedure has been published.

- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Vasya Run Demo and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then restart Steam and launch the demo again.
If Steam reacquires files, test the same action that previously failed. If verification reports no problems, do not keep repeating it; move to the branch that matches the visible symptom. Note whether verification changed the behavior, because that distinction belongs in a support report.
When the demo crashes at launch
Separate an instant process exit from a window that appears but fails to render. They look similar in Steam, but the evidence you collect is different.
Steam says the game is running, then stops
This is an instant-exit pattern. After verifying files and restarting Steam, launch once with nonessential overlays and background capture tools closed. Do not change several system settings at once. Record whether the process remains active for a few seconds, whether a splash screen appears, and any Windows or Steam error text.
- Confirm the Library entry is Vasya Run Demo, not the parent app.
- Check that
Vasya Run.exeexists under the demo’s installation directory. - Confirm that Steam completed the October 2026-era public build update rather than leaving a queued or paused download.
- Run file verification once.
- Retry with the controller disconnected and then with it connected before launch. This is an isolation test, not a claim that the controller causes crashes.
If the demo still exits immediately, capture the exact time, the build date shown by Steam or SteamDB, Windows version, GPU and driver, and any error message. A reproducible sequence such as “launch from Library, process appears for three seconds, exits before a window” is more actionable than “it crashes.”

A window opens but is black, blank, or closes while rendering
For a rendered-window failure, note whether the window is completely black, shows a cursor, displays audio, or becomes unresponsive after a menu appears. Start from the game’s default display and graphics settings. Use the monitor’s native resolution and avoid changing resolution, window mode, and effects simultaneously.
- Launch with the controller and other USB devices in the same state used during the failed test.
- If a window appears, wait long enough to determine whether it renders a menu or closes; record the time rather than force-closing immediately.
- Return display mode and resolution to their defaults.
- Close the demo, change only one demanding graphics effect, and launch again.
- Undo the change if the symptom becomes worse, then test the next variable.
Unreal Engine is among the technologies detected for the demo, but that does not establish a particular Unreal setting, launch option, or GPU requirement. Avoid applying engine commands copied from another game unless the developer documents them for this demo.
How to diagnose stuttering and uneven frame pacing
“Stuttering” can mean a low average frame rate, brief hitches, or inconsistent frame delivery. The available listing information does not publish a tested preset, target frame rate, named GPU requirement, or universal stutter fix. Use a controlled comparison instead of changing every option.
Establish a baseline
- Restart the PC or at least Steam if the demo has been running through several tests.
- Use the game’s default display and graphics settings.
- Set the display to its native resolution.
- Play or reproduce the hitch in the same location and action for each test.
- Write down whether the problem is constant, appears only during movement, or occurs at a repeatable event.
Change one demanding setting at a time
Lower one demanding effect, relaunch if necessary, and repeat the same movement. If frame pacing improves, keep that setting reduced and test the next one only if needed. If nothing changes, restore the setting before trying another variable. This method tells you which change matters on your hardware; it does not create an official recommended preset.

- Do not compare a wired and wireless controller in the same performance test; input and rendering changes should be isolated.
- Record whether a hitch happens only on the first visit to an area or on every pass, without assuming the cause.
- Close recording, browser, and overlay software for one comparison run, then state whether the result changed.
Distinguish stutter from input delay
Ask whether the picture pauses or whether the character responds late while the image remains smooth. A controller connection problem can feel like stutter, and a frame-time problem can make controls appear delayed. Test the same action with keyboard input, then with one controller, and write down which path reproduces the symptom. Do not infer a GPU fault from controller-only hesitation.
Fixing controller problems
The parent Steam listing says, “The developers recommend playing this game with a controller.” SteamDB, however, marks the separate demo’s controller support as partial. That combination means a controller is the intended way to play, but full compatibility with every model or feature is not established.
Use a clean connection test
- Exit the demo.
- Connect one controller before launching. For a wireless pad, confirm that it is paired and awake before starting the game.
- Disconnect other physical gamepads, wheels, fight sticks, and virtual-controller software.
- Launch Vasya Run Demo from Steam.
- Test movement, confirmation, cancellation, and any menu navigation the demo exposes.
- Close the demo and repeat once with a wired connection if the first test was wireless, or wireless if the first test was wired.
Testing wired versus wireless changes one connection variable and can reveal whether the failure follows the transport rather than the game. It does not prove that either mode is universally supported.

Open the demo’s Steam properties and inspect the controller or Input settings available for that game. Test one Steam Input mode at a time, applying the setting before launch and reverting it if the behavior worsens. Avoid stacking a manufacturer’s remapping layer, a virtual controller, and Steam Input during the first test; multiple translation layers make button mapping and duplicate inputs difficult to diagnose.

If the game detects the pad but buttons are wrong, note the physical model, connection type, Steam Input mode, and the exact buttons that fail. If the game does not detect it at all, record whether Steam itself sees the controller. These are different reports and should not be merged into “controller not working.”
Try a replacement only as an isolation test
An Xbox-compatible PC game controller can be used as an optional comparison device after the clean connection checks. Use it to determine whether the problem follows one controller, not as a promise of compatibility. Because the demo is marked partial support, no model-specific compatibility guarantee can be made from the available listing.

Build a useful crash or bug report
When the basic checks do not resolve the issue, a precise report is more useful than a list of unrelated tweaks. Include all of the following in one message:

- Controller details: model, wired or wireless connection, whether it was connected before launch, Steam Input mode, and any other remapping software.
- Checks already performed: update completion, Steam restart, file verification result, default-settings test, and whether changing one variable altered the outcome.
Do not describe an unverified launch option as a guaranteed solution. The available Steam and SteamDB records identify the demo, its executable, size, engine technology, and controller-support label, but they do not document one fix that resolves every crash, stutter, black screen, or controller failure.

When reinstalling is justified
Reinstalling should be a later step, not the first reaction to a single crash. Use it when Steam repeatedly reports missing or reacquired files, the installation never reaches the expected size, or verification cannot complete. Before removing the demo, save your notes about the build and symptom so you can compare the fresh installation fairly.
- Uninstall Vasya Run Demo from Steam.
- Confirm that Steam has removed the demo’s installation directory rather than leaving a partial folder.
- Restart Steam.
- Install the demo again and wait for the full download to finish.
- Confirm that the Library entry is still the demo app and repeat the same baseline test before changing graphics or controller settings.
A clean reinstall cannot correct an incompatibility that is reproducible on a complete, current build, so keep the before-and-after evidence.
What a successful troubleshooting result looks like
For a crash, success means the demo reaches the same menu or gameplay action repeatedly without the process exiting. For stutter, success means the previously repeatable hitch is reduced under a recorded setting change; it does not require claiming a universal frame rate. For a controller, success means the same pad and connection consistently navigate the menus and perform the required actions. If only one connection mode or Steam Input mode works, document that configuration instead of presenting it as a guarantee for every player.
