Start by identifying what is failing
Installation and launch failures point to different parts of the Xbox ecosystem. A missing game page or a disabled Install button usually indicates an entitlement, region or catalog issue. A download that never begins, repeatedly returns to Install, or stops with a Gaming Services message usually involves the Store, Xbox app or Gaming Services. A game that finishes installing but closes immediately should be checked against Windows, hardware, drive and app-service requirements before you reinstall it.

1. Verify Game Pass entitlement and the PC platform
Open the Xbox PC app and sign in with the Microsoft account that carries your subscription. Search for Valor Mortis rather than relying on a shortcut, an old desktop icon or a web result. Xbox identifies the title as a PC game included with PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate. If the product page is absent or shows a purchase prompt, do not delete files yet.

Confirm the account
- Sign out of the Xbox PC app if it is using another Microsoft account.
- Sign back in with the account that owns PC Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate.
- Check that the Microsoft Store is also signed in to the account expected to provide the license. Store and Xbox account mismatches can make a subscription game appear unavailable.
Check catalog conditions
Game Pass access is not a permanent ownership license. The Xbox catalog can differ by plan, country or region, platform and the date you check it. A listing that is available on console does not by itself prove that the PC version is available to your account. Resolve those eligibility conditions first; changing installation folders cannot restore a missing catalog entitlement.
2. Check Windows and the published minimum requirements
The Xbox PC app requires Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or newer. To check, open Settings > System > About and inspect the Windows specifications, or press Windows+R, enter winver, and read the version shown. If the version is older than 22H2, install pending feature and quality updates before trying the game again.
The publisher’s listed minimum for Valor Mortis is more demanding than the minimum needed to run the Xbox app. Compare every item, not just the processor.

Check the installation drive
In File Explorer, right-click the drive you intend to use and choose Properties to see free capacity. Keep more than the stated 60 GB available rather than filling the drive to its limit; Windows, the Xbox app and temporary installation files also need working room. If the PC has both an HDD and an SSD, select the SSD as the Xbox app’s installation location. An HDD or a nearly full drive can block installation or contribute to poor startup behavior.
3. Update Windows, Microsoft Store and the Xbox app
Microsoft’s supported Store-app sequence begins with signing in and making sure Windows is up to date. Complete all three update checks, then restart Windows so services and pending components are loaded together.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install every offered update, including any that require a separate restart. Repeat the check after restarting until Windows reports that it is current.
- Open Microsoft Store, select Library, and use Get updates (the label may appear as an update control in the current Store layout). Allow Store and Xbox-related updates to finish.
- Open the Xbox PC app and let its own update prompt complete if one appears. If the app is delivered through Microsoft Store, its pending update will be listed with the other Store applications.
- Restart Windows. Do not merely close the Xbox window; a full restart reloads the Store, Xbox sign-in and Gaming Services components.
After the restart, search for Valor Mortis again and note whether the button now changes from Install to a download progress state. If nothing changes, continue to repair the apps rather than repeatedly clicking Install.

4. Repair Microsoft Store and Xbox before reinstalling anything
Windows provides a Repair action that refreshes an app without removing its data, followed by Reset when Repair has no effect. Microsoft documents both actions, and reinstalling the app is the next escalation if they do not restore normal behavior.
Repair Microsoft Store
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Store, open its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish. Reopen Microsoft Store and confirm that its Library can load and check for updates.
- If the Xbox app still cannot install the game, return to the same page and select Reset. Reset can clear the Store app’s local state, so you may need to sign in again.
Repair the Xbox PC app
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, locate Xbox.
- Open Advanced options and select Repair.
- Launch Xbox, sign in again if requested, and retry the title from the app’s library or product page.
- If Repair does not change the behavior, use Reset, reopen Xbox and sign in. Resetting the app is different from uninstalling the game; it refreshes the app’s local configuration.
If the Store or Xbox app itself is damaged, uninstall and reinstall that app only after Repair and Reset have failed. Microsoft treats reinstalling as a supported Store-app remedy. Restart Windows after reinstalling before testing Valor Mortis.
5. Repair Gaming Services when installation loops
Gaming Services is a separate dependency from the Xbox user interface. Typical clues are an Install button that returns immediately, an explicit Gaming Services error, or a download that never transitions into an active install. Bethesda’s Xbox-app guidance points to a Gaming Services repair workflow that checks the service and installs required updates.

- Open the Xbox PC app and reproduce the failure once so its Gaming Services message or repair prompt is visible.
- Choose the app’s Gaming Services repair option, if shown, and allow it to check for required service updates.
- Approve the requested Gaming Services installation or update. Do not cancel the process when the Xbox app appears to pause while the service is being repaired.
- Restart Windows after the workflow completes.
- Open Xbox, verify that the same Microsoft account is signed in, and start the installation from the library.
If no repair prompt appears, record the exact wording or error code and continue with the Store/Xbox repair steps. The available guidance does not establish a universal Valor Mortis-specific error-code matrix, so avoid random registry changes or deleting Gaming Services files based on a generic internet suggestion.

Once Windows, Store, Xbox and Gaming Services are current, use the Xbox PC app as the single delivery path. Xbox describes the app as the place to browse the Game Pass library, download a game and launch it directly. Open Library, select Valor Mortis, choose the SSD with at least 60 GB free, and let the download complete without switching accounts during the process.
Launching from the same library entry matters because it tests the entitlement and installation record that the Xbox app maintains. A stale shortcut can point to an old location or an incomplete installation and does not prove that the current package is healthy.

7. If the game installs but will not launch
Do not immediately reinstall a completed 60 GB installation. First separate a service problem from a hardware or Windows-version problem.
Check the baseline again
- Confirm Windows is still 22H2 or newer after all updates and restarts.
- Confirm 16 GB RAM, a Ryzen 5 3600/Core i5-10600K-class processor, an RX 5600 XT/GTX 1660 Ti-class graphics card, DirectX 12 and an SSD. These are the listed minimums, not performance guarantees.
- Check that the installation drive has not fallen below 60 GB free after the download and that it is the SSD you selected.
Refresh the delivery components
Repair Xbox and Microsoft Store again if the launch failure began after an update or an interrupted download. Reset the affected app only after Repair has no effect, then restart Windows. Re-run the Gaming Services repair workflow if Xbox reports a service problem. Finally, launch the game from Xbox > Library, not an old shortcut.
Interpret the result
If Xbox returns to Install, treat the problem as an installation or Gaming Services failure and follow those sections. If Xbox shows the game as installed but Windows closes it before a game window appears, compare the hardware and DirectX requirements and capture the exact message for support. Common traps that waste time
- Assuming every Game Pass tier is identical: PC Game Pass and Ultimate are the plans identified for this PC listing, but catalog availability can change by region, platform and date.
- Ignoring the Windows build: A supported edition with a build older than 22H2 does not satisfy the Xbox PC app requirement.
- Installing to an HDD because it has space: The game lists an SSD requirement; capacity alone is not enough.
- Using only the web listing: The Xbox PC app is where the account entitlement, install target and launch record are applied.
- Resetting before repairing: Repair is the less disruptive first action. Reset can require another sign-in and should follow it.
- Deleting folders or editing the registry from an unverified guide: The documented path is update, repair/reset, Gaming Services repair and, if necessary, reinstall. Unsupported deletion can remove the information needed for a clean repair.
What to send support if none of this works
Escalate to Xbox Support and the game’s developer support channel with evidence gathered from one complete attempt. Include:
- The exact Xbox or Windows error code and its full text.
- Your Windows edition and version, including whether it is 22H2 or newer.
- Your Game Pass tier, Microsoft account region and whether the title appears in the Xbox PC app.
- Whether the failure occurs during entitlement, download, installation or launch.
- The install drive type (SSD or HDD), free capacity and the 60 GB requirement check.
- Your processor, graphics adapter, RAM and DirectX 12 status compared with the listed minimums.
- Which updates, Repair/Reset actions and Gaming Services repair steps completed successfully.
