If V-Sync makes your controls feel delayed or your game stutter, compare settings in the same repeatable scene before changing anything else. V-Sync can reduce screen tearing but add perceived input delay; conventional V-Sync can also stutter when frame rate falls below the display’s refresh rate. The right fix depends on whether you prioritize responsiveness, tear-free motion, or stable frame pacing—and on whether your display and GPU support variable refresh rate (VRR).
Why V-Sync can cause input lag or stuttering
Input delay: smoother images can mean less immediate controls
V-Sync coordinates rendered frames with a display’s refresh cycle to reduce tearing. That coordination can make the response to your input feel less immediate. NVIDIA describes V-Sync backpressure as a source of latency and recommends turning V-Sync off if you are willing to tolerate tearing. There is no single delay figure that applies to every game and system.

Stuttering: frame rate falls below the refresh rate
With conventional V-Sync, a game that cannot sustain the display’s refresh rate may show uneven motion. NVIDIA illustrates this with a 60 Hz display: frame rate can lock to a lower level such as 45 or 30 fps. Those are examples, not guaranteed behavior across all games, hardware, or synchronization methods. [NVIDIA explains Adaptive VSync]

| Setting to compare | What it may improve | Trade-off or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| V-Sync off | Can reduce V-Sync-related latency. | May allow screen tearing. NVIDIA recommends this option when the player accepts tearing. NVIDIA latency guidance |
| Conventional V-Sync on | Can reduce tearing when frames are presented in step with a fixed-refresh display. | May feel less responsive; stutter can occur if frame rate drops below the refresh rate. NVIDIA Adaptive VSync explanation |
| G-SYNC or FreeSync (VRR) | Can reduce tearing and stutter by matching display refresh behavior to GPU frame rate within supported operating conditions. | Requires compatible display and GPU, and may depend on the connection and supported VRR range. Enable it on the display and in the relevant graphics software. NVIDIA G-SYNC documentation; AMD FreeSync |
| Frame-rate cap | Can help when game FPS regularly exceeds the display’s refresh rate. | The useful cap depends on the synchronization path and device; controls vary by game and driver. AMD recommends V-Sync or a frame-rate cap for tear-free presentation when FPS regularly exceeds refresh. AMD FreeSync guidance |
Fix V-Sync input lag and stuttering step by step
1. Establish a baseline
- Open the affected game and choose a scene or action you can repeat.
- Record how controls feel and whether motion tears or stutters with your current settings.
- Turn V-Sync off and repeat the same scene. Keep it off if responsiveness improves and the amount of tearing is acceptable. NVIDIA identifies V-Sync backpressure as a latency source. Read NVIDIA’s latency guidance
2. Check whether frame rate is falling below refresh
Compare the game’s frame rate with the display’s active refresh rate. If frame rate regularly drops below refresh while conventional V-Sync is on, test another synchronization option rather than assuming the display is faulty. NVIDIA’s 60 Hz example shows how a drop below the cap can produce lower frame-rate behavior, but your game may behave differently. NVIDIA Adaptive VSync
3. Enable VRR if both display and GPU support it
- Check the monitor or TV specifications and its on-screen settings for FreeSync, G-SYNC, or another supported VRR mode. Compatibility depends on the display, GPU, and connection.
- Enable VRR in the display’s own settings.
- Enable the matching feature in the graphics software. For AMD, the setup article recommends enabling FreeSync both in the monitor and AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. AMD FreeSync setup instructions
- Retest the same scene. VRR works within supported operating conditions; it does not guarantee identical behavior at every frame rate or with every display connection. NVIDIA G-SYNC documentation; AMD FreeSync details
4. Test a frame-rate cap when FPS exceeds refresh
If the game regularly renders more frames per second than the display can refresh, compare a cap with V-Sync as an alternative to uncapped output. AMD recommends V-Sync or capping frame rate for tear-free presentation in this situation. NVIDIA’s low-latency G-SYNC guidance describes keeping V-Sync on with Reflex or Ultra Low Latency and automatically capping below refresh; NVIDIA notes that this has slightly higher latency than uncapped FPS with Reflex. The best choice depends on the game and driver, so test rather than assume a single cap value. AMD FreeSync guidance; NVIDIA latency guidance

- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic

- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
5. Use the game’s latency option if it supports one
For a game with NVIDIA Reflex, test Reflex in the game’s own settings. NVIDIA says Reflex coordinates CPU and GPU work to reduce PC latency, is more effective than the driver’s Ultra Low Latency mode, and overrides that mode when both are enabled. Reflex requires support in the specific game, so it is not a universal driver fix. NVIDIA Reflex and latency guidance

- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
- Frame-rate stability: See whether the game’s frame rate is steady or frequently falls below the display’s refresh rate.
- Active refresh setting: Confirm that the operating system and game are using the refresh rate you expect.
- VRR support and configuration: Verify compatibility across the display, GPU, and connection; check both display and graphics-software settings.
- Display mode: Compare fullscreen and windowed behavior if the game offers both; results can depend on the game and system.
- Per-game overrides: Check whether the game or graphics software has a separate V-Sync, frame cap, or latency setting overriding another choice.
If your current display lacks an appropriate VRR feature, a compatible VRR monitor is an optional upgrade—not the default fix. Verify the exact monitor’s compatibility with your GPU before buying.
