A network video recorder (NVR) receives video streams from IP cameras or other networked video devices, saves recordings to storage, and lets users search and play them back. It is a recorder used in network video surveillance—not simply any network storage device. Features and camera compatibility depend on the specific recorder and its software.
What a network video recorder does
An NVR is the recording component in a network video surveillance system. In practical terms, it receives a camera’s video stream over an IP network, records it to permanent storage, and provides tools for finding and reviewing footage. Depending on the product, those tools may include search, playback, and export; exact functions vary.

ONVIF uses the broader term Network Video Storage (NVS) for a device that records media and metadata received from a streaming device over an IP network to permanent storage, and allows clients to review stored data. Its version 2.10 definition gives an NVR as one example of an NVS device.

How an NVR fits into a camera system
IP cameras send video over a network to the recorder. The NVR stores the footage and gives an operator a way to locate and view recordings. Some systems also support access through a web client or mobile application. The College of Policing’s CCTV glossary describes an NVR as a network-based surveillance video recording system, typically using IP cameras; remote access is a possible feature, not a guarantee of every NVR.

NVR vs. DVR
NVR and DVR are names for types of surveillance video recorders. ONVIF’s NVS category is broader than either name: it can include NVRs, DVRs, and cameras with embedded storage. The sources establish these roles and category relationships, but not a universal technical distinction that applies to every product. Check the specifications for a particular system rather than assuming all NVRs and DVRs use the same processing or encoding design.
Check compatibility before choosing an NVR
An NVR does not necessarily work with every IP camera. Compatibility can depend on the exact camera and recorder models, their firmware or software versions, and the functions you need. ONVIF advises users to verify conformance in its official Conformant Products database; a conformance entry is tied to a product’s registered firmware or software version, and some capabilities are conditional.

- Whether the exact camera and NVR models are listed as conformant, and which ONVIF profiles or capabilities they support.
- Whether their registered firmware and software versions match the versions in use.
- Whether the recorder supports the number of cameras, recording resolution, and frame rate you need.
- Whether its storage capacity and supported drive arrangements suit your retention needs.
- How cameras connect to the network, including whether the NVR provides Power over Ethernet (PoE).
- Whether the system provides the local or remote access, search, playback, alerts, and export functions you need.
ONVIF describes its work as supporting interoperability for IP-based physical security products and services on its mission page. Conformance is a useful compatibility check, but verify the particular functions required for your setup in the manufacturers’ documentation.
