If Urlwatch is blocked, first find out whether the site is denying the request or whether Urlwatch is retrieving a page that needs JavaScript to show the content you want. A 403 Forbidden response is a clue, not a diagnosis. Inspect the response, confirm that automated access is allowed, and choose an authorized source or rendering method. If the site intentionally blocks monitoring, do not try to evade the restriction; ask the site for an approved route.
Identify what Urlwatch is actually receiving
Urlwatch retrieves job output, applies filters, compares it with previous output, and can notify you when it changes. A failed or unexpected result can therefore come from the site response, page rendering, or the choice of content being monitored—not just from Urlwatch configuration. - Run the job and note the exact error or HTTP status, if one is reported.
- Inspect the response content. A challenge or access-denied page is different from a valid page whose main content is missing.
- Compare the URL job’s response with what you can see in an ordinary browser. If the browser shows content that is absent from the direct response, the page may rely on JavaScript rendering.
- If you operate the destination site, inspect its security events for the rule or feature that acted. If it is someone else’s site, contact its operator rather than trying to change its protections.
A 403 Forbidden response by itself does not reveal which rule fired or prove why the request was denied. Cloudflare documents user-agent rules that can block or challenge requests, as well as other security and traffic controls; the specific cause depends on the site’s configuration. Choose the right Urlwatch job for the content
The key distinction is between fetching a server response and rendering a page in a browser. Neither method guarantees access if the site denies or challenges the request.

Fix an allowed URL job request
If the site permits ordinary automated requests and the direct response contains the content you need, check the URL job’s request settings. Urlwatch supports request headers and a user-agent value. Use an accurate, stable client identity and only headers the site allows; do not make the request impersonate a different browser or person.

A changed user-agent is not a general fix for a 403 or challenge. Cloudflare documents rules that can act on that header, and a site may use other signals or policies. If you control the destination and a rule is incorrectly catching your own permitted monitor, inspect the relevant security event and correct the rule through the site’s supported configuration. If you do not control the site, ask its operator what request method is allowed.
Prefer an authorized API when it has the data
If the page displays information obtained from an API, check whether the site documents an endpoint or otherwise authorizes its use. When that endpoint returns the exact fields you need, configure a URL job to monitor it instead of rendering the surrounding page. This avoids browser rendering work and may make checks faster, but it does not grant permission to use an undocumented endpoint or bypass access controls.

Use a Browser job only when JavaScript rendering is needed
If the direct response lacks content that appears after page rendering, a Browser job may be appropriate. Urlwatch 2.29 documents Browser jobs powered by Playwright, with browser selection and wait options; using them requires installing the optional Playwright dependency and browser binaries. Follow the installation and job configuration steps in the jobs documentation.
Browser rendering has a resource cost and added setup compared with a URL job. It solves a rendering mismatch, not an intentional denial: a rendered browser can still receive an access-denied page or challenge. Do not use browser settings to disguise automation or defeat a site’s controls.

Respect denial, rate limits, and intermittent failures
If the response is a block or challenge page, or the site owner says automated access is not allowed, stop polling and seek an approved path. Check the site’s published API, terms, or contact channel and request permission or an alternative feed. Do not use proxy rotation, CAPTCHA workarounds, replayed clearance cookies, or fingerprint changes to get around a denial.

Avoid aggressive retries. Urlwatch’s introduction recommends scheduling checks no more often than every 30 minutes, while the site’s own rules may require a longer interval or prohibit polling altogether. Troubleshoot common Urlwatch symptoms
- Urlwatch gets 403 Forbidden: inspect the response and status, then verify whether the site permits automated access. A 403 alone does not identify the responsible rule; a user-agent change is not guaranteed to help.
- Urlwatch shows a Cloudflare page: treat it as a site-side challenge or denial, not proof that a Browser job will work. If you operate the site, check security events; otherwise contact the site operator for an approved route.
- The URL job misses content visible in a browser: determine whether the page renders it with JavaScript. Prefer an authorized API if it supplies the data; otherwise consider a Browser job for rendering.
- A Browser job still fails: check the response it receives and whether Playwright and the required browser are installed. If it receives a challenge or denial, rendering is not a remedy for that restriction.
- The job sometimes works and sometimes fails: do not respond with rapid retries. Check for site guidance, reduce polling if permitted, and ask the operator if the failure persists.
