If the back of a double-sided page prints upside down, change the duplex binding setting: choose Long Edge for pages that turn like a book, or Short Edge for pages that flip upward like a calendar. Print a test sheet before printing the whole document.
Choose the flip setting that matches how you read the page
Long-edge and short-edge describe the edge around which the sheet turns—not the direction paper feeds into the printer.

Names vary across printer drivers and applications. Microsoft describes the choices as Long-Edge and Short-Edge binding in its Word for Mac printing guidance; HP uses “Flip on Long Edge” and “Flip on Short Edge” in its double-sided printing instructions.

Find Two-Sided, Duplex, Print on Both Sides, or a similarly named control. Depending on the application and printer driver, the option may be in printer properties or layout settings.

Choose Long Edge for a book-style portrait document or Short Edge for a page that should flip upward.

Check the print preview if available, then print one test sheet. Turn it as you intend to read it and confirm that the back is upright. Epson’s Windows double-sided printing instructions recommend a test copy to check the selected settings.

Check whether portrait and landscape pages are mixed
A single duplex binding rule can produce different results across pages with different orientations. Microsoft documents this issue for Word 2010 and 2013, where mixed portrait and landscape pages may need separate duplex jobs. If only the landscape pages—or only the portrait pages—are upside down, divide the document into groups with consistent orientation and print each group using the appropriate flip setting. If you cannot find a two-sided printing option
Automatic duplexing depends on the printer model and may also depend on the selected driver, connection, or print settings. Check the exact model’s specifications or manual, and look through its driver properties before assuming the printer lacks the capability. HP’s Windows duplex instructions for Samsung laser printers explain that automatic duplex availability is model-dependent.
Use manual duplex only with the printer’s reload instructions
When automatic duplexing is unavailable, an application or printer driver may offer manual duplex: it prints one side, then prompts you to turn or reload the sheets for the second pass. Follow the prompt and the instructions for your specific printer. There is no universal face-up or face-down rule because the correct reload orientation depends on the printer’s paper path and tray design. HP’s manual duplex guidance gives reload directions that vary by printer.
