How to Choose a Legal Alternative to a Torrent Tracker for Sharing Large Files

For lawful file sharing, choose a cloud-drive or file-transfer service that fits your file size, whether recipients need to collaborate, and how narrowly you need to control access. For a nearby recipient, a USB flash drive may be simpler. First, make sure you own the file or have permission to distribute it: a transfer service does not grant copyright rights.

Start with permission to share

A legal file-transfer method does not make every file lawful to distribute. Dropbox’s official copyright policy says: “You should only use shared folders, public links, and photo galleries for files that you have the legal right to share with others (for example, documents, photos, software, music, and videos that you personally created).” The policy says that right generally comes from owning the copyright or receiving permission to share the work. Read Dropbox’s copyright policy.

Whether a particular distribution is lawful can depend on the work, its license, your permission, the circumstances, and the law where you and the recipients are located. Choosing a service cannot settle those questions by itself.

Choose between a transfer link and shared access

Use a transfer link for a finished file

A transfer link is suited to a one-time delivery, such as sending a completed video or finalized document. Dropbox distinguishes its Transfer feature from shared folders: Transfer is intended for files that do not need collaboration. See Dropbox’s large-file sharing options and how Dropbox Transfer works.

Use a shared folder for ongoing collaboration

If recipients need to work with files over time, use a shared folder or drive instead. This keeps access connected to the shared content rather than sending a separate copy for each delivery. Google Drive supports sharing with selected collaborators or with anyone who has the link; folder permissions can apply to files and subfolders. Its available roles include Viewer, Commenter, and Editor. Google explains Drive sharing and permissions.

Compare file limits and account conditions

Option Documented file-size or upload limit Useful distinction
Dropbox Transfer Dropbox advertises transfers up to 100 GB, or up to 250 GB with an add-on; its Basic plan supports transfers up to 2 GB. Designed for delivery when recipients do not need to collaborate on the files.
Google Workspace shared drives Google’s shared-drive guidance allows uploads and synchronization of files up to 5 TB. A user may upload or copy up to 750 GB to Drive within 24 hours; that limit refreshes within 24 hours. These are documented shared-drive limits, not universal guarantees for every consumer or Workspace account.
Microsoft OneDrive Not stated in the cited sharing guidance. Sharing permissions and link expiry depend on the configured link settings.

Limits and available features depend on the account, plan, and—in work or school accounts—administrator settings, and providers can change them. Check the current terms for the account you will use. Dropbox recommends its desktop app or API for very large uploads; it says files larger than 375 GB should be uploaded using the desktop app rather than dropbox.com. See Dropbox’s upload guidance.

Set access as narrowly as practical

Before creating a link, decide who should be able to open it and what they should be allowed to do. A link that can be forwarded may reach people beyond the original recipients. Google warns that linked material may be used or interpreted beyond the sharer’s purposes or intent. Review Google Drive’s sharing options.

  • Choose the audience: use selected recipients when only named people need access. Use “anyone with the link” only when that broader access is appropriate.
  • Choose the permission: grant viewing, commenting, or editing only as needed. Editing is not necessary for a recipient who only needs to download or review a file.
  • Check link controls: Dropbox says shared links can be password-protected and assigned an expiry date. OneDrive’s documented settings include link permissions and expiry. Dropbox link features; Microsoft’s OneDrive sharing guidance.
  • Check account eligibility: Google Drive expiry features depend on eligible work or school accounts. Google’s sharing guidance.

Recipient account or app requirements, transfer retention, and what happens after a link expires can vary by workflow and plan. Confirm those details with the provider before relying on a link for a time-sensitive delivery.

Consider a physical handoff for nearby recipients

If the recipient is close enough to meet, copying the file to a USB flash drive can avoid uploading and downloading it. It is an in-person handoff, not a remote-sharing replacement. A UK Intellectual Property Office report listed Dropbox, WeTransfer, USB sticks, email, and messaging apps among ways respondents received video-game files directly from someone else. That category represented an average 1% usage split in a 2021 survey of 1,028 people who had accessed video games online in the previous three months; it is dated UK survey context, not a current measure of general file-sharing habits. See the UK IPO report.

Check the delivery before sharing the real file

  1. Confirm permission: verify that you own the work or are authorized to distribute it.
  2. Match the method to the job: choose a transfer for a finished, one-time delivery; choose shared storage when recipients need continued access or collaboration.
  3. Check the limit for your account: compare the file size with the service’s current plan limit and any daily upload cap.
  4. Set the audience and permissions: select named recipients where practical, and grant only the access they need.
  5. Test with a sample file: open the link as a recipient would, confirm it downloads or opens as expected, and check any expiry or password settings before sending the actual file.
