Converting a layered PSD to PNG gives you a flattened image, not a new layered document. The PNG can preserve the visible composite and transparent pixels, and PNG compression is lossless, but the PSD’s separate layers, masks, effects, and layer-based edits are no longer available in that exported file. Keep the PSD as your editable master and export a separate PNG for sharing or delivery.
What changes when you convert a PSD to PNG?
A PSD is Photoshop’s native working format for keeping layers and Photoshop editing features intact. A PNG is a raster image of the rendered result. When Photoshop saves a layered document as PNG, it flattens the layers and edits into one image; Adobe Learn describes this behavior in its save and export tutorial.

Does a PNG keep layers or preserve editability?
No. The PNG contains the rendered image, not the PSD layer stack. You can still edit the PNG as an image, but you cannot independently select and adjust the original text, objects, masks, or effects as separate layers. PNG’s lossless compression does not make the conversion reversible: it avoids lossy image compression, but it does not preserve the source document structure. The GIMP manual describes PNG compression as non-lossy; that is a property of PNG image data, not a promise to retain layers.

It can. PNG supports transparent pixels, and Adobe’s tutorial distinguishes PNG from JPEG for transparent areas. However, exporting as PNG does not automatically remove a background. If the PSD has an opaque background layer, the exported composite will show that background. Check the exported image in a viewer that displays transparency, or place it over a contrasting background in an editor to confirm the expected areas are transparent.

How to save a PNG without losing your PSD

Keep the working document as a PSD. Adobe recommends saving a PSD copy to keep layers, effects, and masks intact: Photoshop file formats.

Export or save a separate PNG copy for delivery. Photoshop may direct a layered file to Save a Copy when you choose a format that does not support its features; the exact prompt and menu path can vary with version and document features. Adobe’s save and export tutorial explains the flattening consequence.

Choose the output that matches the recipient’s need. Export the composite when they need one finished image. If they need separate assets, Photoshop can export selected layers, groups, or artboards as individual PNG files; these remain separate raster outputs, not a layered PNG document. Open the PNG and check transparency, dimensions, color appearance, and expected bit depth before sending it. A flattened image may look right while still being the wrong size, having an unwanted background, or not matching a specialized color workflow.

What to check about bit depth and color mode
Format support depends on the application and workflow. Adobe’s current Photoshop format overview, updated February 23, 2026, lists PNG among formats supporting 16-bit images, but not among the listed 32-bit formats. Adobe’s saving documentation describes Photoshop PNG saving for RGB, Indexed Color, Grayscale, and Bitmap modes. Treat these as Photoshop-specific support details, not a guarantee for every editor or export path; check the document’s mode and the available options in your version before converting.

- Keep PSD when you or a collaborator may need to change individual layers, masks, effects, or other Photoshop-specific editing features.
- Use PNG when the recipient needs a flattened raster image and transparency or lossless image compression is useful.
- Export separate PNG assets when the recipient needs individual elements rather than one composite, while retaining the PSD if those elements may need future layer-level changes.
These formats serve different stages of a workflow rather than replacing one another. Adobe recommends keeping an editable PSD master and making separate delivery copies; its format overview also notes that PSD supports files up to 2 GB and recommends PSB for larger documents. Adobe’s PSB specification states a limit of 300,000 pixels in any dimension; check the current limits for the Photoshop version you use.
