Start with the correct game build
CD PROJEKT RED announced the Remastered PlayStation 5 Pro support on 28 September 2026. The feature notes apply to the Remastered build, not an older unpatched installation. Patch 5.01 was published on 8 October 2026 and includes console performance optimizations, fixes for PlayStation 5 settings resetting at launch, and corrections for incorrect frame-rate limits in different graphics modes on the base PlayStation 5. It also adjusts Bloom, tone mapping, character lighting, Ray Tracing and Path Tracing.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open the game’s update information from the PS5 home screen and install every available update.
- Confirm that the installed version is the current Remastered release and that Patch 5.01 has completed installation.
- Wait for downloads and installation to finish before judging HDR, VRR or frame pacing.
- Launch the game again after updating. A setting that was unavailable or reset before the patch can behave normally after a clean launch.
Do not begin by changing television sliders or replacing hardware. The launch notes specifically record a fix for HDR settings that sometimes did not appear on consoles, so an update check is the first response to a missing HDR menu.

What the PS5 Pro modes are designed to do
The official PlayStation-specific notes describe three important capabilities: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and uncapped frame rates. PSSR is intended to provide higher visual fidelity without compromising performance. VRR allows a compatible display to follow changes in the rendered frame rate instead of presenting every frame at a fixed refresh interval.
| Mode | Lighting and image emphasis | Official frame-rate behavior | Display condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ray Tracing Mode | Enhanced lighting with ray-tracing effects | Targets 60 FPS | VRR is not stated as a requirement for the 60 FPS target |
| Performance Mode | Higher resolution than its earlier configuration | Targets 60 FPS and can reach up to 90 FPS | The up-to-90-FPS behavior is specified for VRR-capable displays |
“Target” does not mean a permanent lock in every scene. Rendering load, the display’s refresh behavior and the console’s current condition can affect what you see. Treat the table as the intended design of each mode, then use the tests below to identify what is happening on your equipment.
Fix a missing HDR menu
If HDR controls are absent from the game, update first. CD PROJEKT RED’s launch notes explicitly say that an issue where HDR settings sometimes failed to appear on consoles was fixed. This is different from HDR looking wrong after the controls are visible.

- Fully close the game rather than resuming it from a suspended state.
- Start it again and open its display or graphics options to check for HDR controls.
- At the PS5 system level, open the Screen and Video settings and verify that HDR is enabled for the console and display combination.
- Return to the game’s display options and enable HDR there when the option is available.
If the menu appears after updating and restarting, no television-side repair was needed. If it remains absent, record the installed game version and whether HDR is available in the PS5 system settings before pursuing display troubleshooting.
Correct a washed-out HDR picture
There is no single HDR slider value that CD PROJEKT RED identifies as correct for every television or monitor. Panel brightness, tone mapping and the display’s HDR processing differ, so calibration must be treated as display-specific.

Use a controlled calibration pass
- Confirm HDR is enabled in the PS5 system settings and in the game.
- Put the television or monitor in its game/HDR picture mode rather than a general cinema or vivid preset.
- Leave the game’s HDR controls at a known starting point, then adjust one control at a time while viewing the same scene.
- After each adjustment, check both bright highlights and dark detail. A picture that is merely brighter is not necessarily better calibrated.
- Do not change the console HDR setting, the display preset and the game slider simultaneously; you will not know which change altered the image.
Patch 5.01 includes visual adjustments to tone mapping, Bloom and character lighting. Recheck the picture after the patch before assuming that an earlier calibration still applies. If the image remains pale or gray, switch back to the display’s game/HDR mode and repeat the one-variable test rather than copying a value from another television.
Set up VRR correctly
VRR is an official PS5 Pro feature for the Remastered game, but the display must also support VRR. The up-to-90-FPS behavior in Performance Mode is specifically conditioned on a VRR-capable display. A television or monitor that cannot accept VRR cannot show that behavior, even though the console and game support it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Check the television or monitor specifications for VRR support and enable its gaming or VRR function.
- In the PS5 Screen and Video settings, verify that VRR is enabled when supported by the connected display.
- Launch the game after enabling VRR and select Performance Mode if your priority is the highest frame-rate range.
- Play the same route or scene for several minutes, noting whether camera movement is smooth and whether the display reports a VRR signal.
- For a controlled comparison, disable VRR once, repeat the same movement, then restore VRR. Keep the game mode unchanged during this test.
VRR can smooth changes in frame delivery, but it does not create extra rendering performance. If the console is busy with downloads, has been resumed repeatedly from Rest Mode or is overheating, those conditions still need to be corrected.
Work through stuttering in the supported order
CD PROJEKT RED’s technical support guidance covers low frame rates, choppy performance and long loading times. Apply the checks in this order because each one removes a common source of unstable frame delivery without introducing a new display variable.
1. Finish the update and stop background downloads
Install the current game patch, then pause or finish other downloads running on the PS5. Background network and storage activity can coincide with the symptoms you are trying to measure. Test the game only after the download queue is clear.

2. Perform a full restart after Rest Mode
Restart the console completely if you have been using Rest Mode. The official support guidance says to “make sure to restart the console after using Rest Mode,” because sleep mode does not clear the cache and may contribute to performance issues. Do not simply wake the console and continue the same session when diagnosing stutter.
3. Check airflow and heat
Make sure the PS5 Pro has unobstructed airflow and is not overheating. Remove dust or dirt around the rear ventilation area. Avoid placing the console where fabric, a wall or another device blocks its exhaust path. If the console displays an overheating warning, shut it down and correct the ventilation problem before continuing. The support guidance does not establish that a particular cooling stand or accessory fixes this game, so focus on clear airflow and a clean console.
4. Inspect a physical disc when applicable
For a disc installation, check that the disc is clean and undamaged. A damaged disc can contribute to loading problems. Digital installations do not have a disc to inspect, so proceed to the remaining software and session checks.
5. Restart the game after a long session
Close and relaunch the game after an unusually long play session. CD PROJEKT RED recommends restarting after long sessions to clear memory and improve performance. This is a practical test: if a fresh launch is smooth but stutter returns only after many hours, note the session length and use periodic restarts while waiting for a permanent software fix.
Separate a game-mode issue from a console issue
Once updates, downloads, Rest Mode and ventilation have been addressed, compare the two official graphics modes. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a claim that one mode universally fixes every display.
Rank #4
- Set the game to Ray Tracing Mode and keep HDR and VRR settings unchanged.
- Play the same area and repeat the same camera pans or traversal route. Record visible hitching and how the display handles motion.
- Switch to Performance Mode without changing the television picture preset.
- Repeat the identical route and note whether frame pacing, image detail or HDR appearance changes.
- Run the comparison once with VRR enabled and, if necessary, once with VRR disabled. Label each observation with the mode and VRR state.
Ray Tracing Mode is the appropriate test when enhanced lighting is more important to you and its official target is 60 FPS. Performance Mode is the appropriate test when you want the higher-resolution performance configuration and the possibility of up to 90 FPS on a VRR-capable display. If both modes stutter in the same places after a clean restart, investigate console conditions and report the reproducible location rather than assuming the television is at fault.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose settings by symptom and priority
| Your priority | Starting choice | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Enhanced lighting | Ray Tracing Mode | Whether the 60 FPS target remains consistent in the tested area |
| Highest supported frame-rate range | Performance Mode with VRR enabled | Whether the display accepts VRR and motion is smoother |
| HDR is missing | Update and restart before changing picture settings | Whether the HDR controls return after Patch 5.01 |
| HDR looks washed out | Keep HDR enabled and calibrate the display’s game/HDR mode one variable at a time | Highlight detail, shadow detail and tone mapping |
| Stutter follows a long session | Close and relaunch the game | Whether a fresh session restores smoothness |
When the symptoms persist
Keep a short test record instead of making several changes at once. Write down the game version, graphics mode, HDR state, VRR state, whether the console was restarted after Rest Mode, whether downloads were active, and how long the session had run. Note the exact area where the hitch occurs and whether it appears in both modes.
- If HDR controls are missing only before updating, the launch-note fix points to the game build.
- If HDR controls are present but the image is washed out, use the display-specific calibration process rather than searching for a universal slider value.
- If Performance Mode behaves differently when VRR is enabled, verify that the display is genuinely VRR-capable; the up-to-90-FPS specification depends on that capability.
- If stutter clears after a full restart or game relaunch, include Rest Mode history and session length in any support report.
- If stutter remains across both modes after updates, a clean restart, cleared downloads and an airflow check, provide the reproducible steps and console conditions to technical support.
Do not infer a fault from a single brief hitch during a busy scene. Repeat the same route after the controlled restart and compare like-for-like settings. The goal is to identify a repeatable pattern while preserving the official mode and feature expectations.
What Patch 5.01 changes for diagnosis
Patch 5.01’s console notes matter even when your immediate complaint is not one of its named fixes. It lists general performance optimizations, fixes for PlayStation 5 settings resetting at launch, and corrections to frame-rate limits in different graphics modes on the base PlayStation 5. Its visual adjustments cover Bloom, tone mapping, character lighting, Ray Tracing and Path Tracing. Therefore, any pre-patch comparison of HDR appearance or frame pacing is not a reliable baseline for the current Remastered build.
After installing the patch, establish a fresh baseline: launch from a full console restart, confirm the selected mode, verify HDR and VRR, and then test the same scene. This prevents old settings and an old frame-rate limit from being mistaken for a PS5 Pro hardware or display problem.
PS5 Pro capability summary
The official 28 September 2026 announcement establishes PS5 Pro support for the Remastered game, including PSSR, VRR and uncapped frame rates. It states that Ray Tracing Mode brings enhanced lighting while targeting 60 FPS. It also states that Performance Mode offers a higher resolution while targeting 60 FPS and up to 90 FPS on VRR-capable displays. These are the capabilities to expect from the supported build; they are not a guarantee that every scene will hold a fixed frame rate or that every display will present the same HDR image.
The Bottom Line
Install Patch 5.01, restart the PS5 Pro fully after Rest Mode, clear downloads, verify airflow and dust, then test HDR and VRR one variable at a time. Use Ray Tracing Mode for enhanced lighting at a 60 FPS target, or Performance Mode for its 60 FPS target and up-to-90-FPS behavior on a VRR-capable display.
