The Valheim “incompatible version” message means the game client and server do not agree on a build, branch, or server-checked mod set. It usually does not mean that your installation is corrupted. Check the numeric Steam build IDs first, confirm that both sides use the same branch, update whichever side is older, and then make the mod lists identical. If a self-hosted server crashes after updating, inspect the BepInEx log before changing anything else.

What the incompatible-version message actually means
Valheim refuses the connection when the client and server cannot establish a compatible session. The message itself does not identify the differing build ID, so reinstalling the game immediately is rarely the right first move.

Different game builds
The most common cause is that Steam has updated one side but not the other. A dedicated server can remain on an older build if its update process did not run, if it was still running while an update was attempted, or if its host selected a different Steam branch. The player may therefore have the current game while the server is still on the previous patch.
Compare the numeric Steam build IDs rather than relying on the visible patch number. The larger number is newer; the side with the smaller number is behind. Because the error does not display these IDs, you must read them from Steam or the server’s update output and compare them yourself.

Different branches
Both ends must use the same branch. A player on the normal public branch cannot reliably join a server running a public-test build, even when both installations otherwise appear up to date. On a self-hosted server, branch selection is commonly controlled by the SteamCMD launch or update arguments.
Different mods
Many server-side mods perform their own version checks. Valheim Plus and numerous BepInEx plugins can reject a connection when a required plugin is missing, when a plugin version differs, or when configuration files do not match. This can produce the same refusal as a game-build mismatch.
A client and server can therefore show the same Steam build ID and still be incompatible. Treat mod parity as a separate check, not as proof that the game versions match.
Use this order to fix the error
- Stop guessing from the error text. Record the numeric Steam build ID on the player side and on the server side.
- Compare the branch. Confirm that every player and the server are on the same public or public-test branch.
- Update the older side. Stop the dedicated server before updating it; then run its SteamCMD update or reinstall and restart it.
- Allow the server to finish starting. Wait a few minutes after the restart, then try a direct IP connection to rule out a stale server-browser entry.
- Make the mod sets identical. Match plugin names, versions, load order where relevant, and configuration files. If the server is intended to be vanilla, remove the mod from the server instead.
- If the server crashes after a patch, read BepInEx’s log. The first non-engine stack-trace frame usually points to the plugin that needs updating or removal.
Work through the list in that order. Changing mods before confirming the game build can hide the original cause, while reinstalling the client before checking the server often changes nothing.
Step 1: Compare the Steam build IDs
Read the client build
Use Steam’s current installation information or update output to identify the numeric build associated with your Valheim client. Write the number down exactly; do not compare only the words “latest” or “up to date.” If Steam has a pending download, let it complete and restart Steam before recording the number.
Read the server build
For a dedicated server, inspect the SteamCMD update output or the server’s startup information after an update. The update process reports the build it installed. If the server is managed by another administrator, ask for that number rather than assuming the host is current.

Interpret the comparison

The higher number is newer, but “newer” does not mean “compatible” if the branch differs. Always perform the branch check as well.
Step 2: Confirm the branch on every installation
Player branch
Each player should select the same Valheim branch in Steam. Do not mix the normal public branch with a public-test branch. If several people can join but one person cannot, compare that person’s branch with a player who can connect before changing the server.
Self-hosted server branch
Review the SteamCMD command or script used to install and update the server. If it contains -beta public-test or -betapassword, the server is being directed toward the public-test branch. Remove both arguments when the server should track the normal public branch, then run the update again.
After changing the branch, stop and restart the server rather than leaving the existing process running. Record the new build ID after the update; a branch change can install a different build even when Steam previously reported that the server was current.

A public-test build and a public build can have similar visible version labels while carrying different internal builds. The branch setting and numeric build ID must agree on both sides.
Step 3: Update a dedicated server safely
Stop the running process first
Shut down the Valheim dedicated-server process cleanly before updating. Updating files underneath an active process can leave a mixture of old and new files, and the server may continue reporting its old build until it is restarted.

Run the SteamCMD update
Use the SteamCMD installation or update script that normally manages the server. The Valheim dedicated-server Steam app uses app ID 896660; a typical SteamCMD session logs in anonymously, selects that app, and runs an update such as:
steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 896660 validate +quitIf your service wrapper already supplies the login and app ID, use its existing update command instead of creating a second installation. The important result is that SteamCMD completes successfully and reports the new build; “command started” is not the same as “update finished.”
Reinstall only when the update cannot complete
If SteamCMD repeatedly fails to download or validate the server, make a backup of the world and configuration files, then reinstall the dedicated-server files with the correct branch. Do not delete worlds or configuration files as a first response to an incompatible-version message; the error concerns compatibility, not evidence of a damaged world.
Restart and wait
Start the server after SteamCMD exits. Give it a few minutes to finish loading before testing. A server that has just been updated may not be ready when it first appears in a browser list.
Test by direct IP
Connect directly by IP and port after the restart. This bypasses a stale or delayed server-browser listing and tells you whether the server process itself accepts the connection. If direct connection works but the browser entry does not, the remaining problem is discovery or listing delay rather than a version mismatch.
Step 4: Make the mod installation identical
Match every plugin, not just the headline mod
Compare the complete server and client mod sets. Include BepInEx plugins, framework dependencies, server-side enforcement mods, and any plugin whose version check runs during connection. One missing DLL or one different release can be enough to trigger the refusal.

- Use the same mod name and version on every player and on the server.
- Copy or synchronize configuration files when a mod requires matching settings.
- Remove obsolete DLLs from the plugins directory; leaving an old copy beside the new one can load both or preserve the mismatch.
- Check that every player has the same dependency versions, not merely the same visible mod list.
Use an r2modman profile when the group uses r2modman
Have the host export or share the modpack code found in r2modman’s settings. Each player can import that code to create a profile containing the same mods and configurations. This is more reliable than asking players to install a list manually, because manual installation often misses a dependency or leaves an old configuration behind.
After importing, close and reopen the profile so the manager finishes downloads and configuration changes. The host should update the server’s files to the same profile versions before testing a connection.
When the server is supposed to be vanilla
Remove the server-side mod that is enforcing the mismatch, then restart the server. Do not leave a server plugin installed while telling players to run an unmodded client; a server that checks for a plugin can reject an otherwise current vanilla client.
Isolate a mod-related refusal
If the build IDs and branches match, temporarily test with a deliberately identical minimal profile. Remove nonessential plugins from both sides, restart, and add them back in groups. This identifies the first incompatible plugin without permanently discarding the normal mod setup. Keep a record of each change so the working combination can be restored.

An incompatible-version refusal and a server crash are different symptoms. A crash immediately after a game update is often caused by a mod that still expects the previous game code, even when the Steam builds are correct.
Find the BepInEx log
Open the BepInEx log produced by the server during startup. Locate the stack trace associated with the crash and identify the first frame that is not part of the game engine or a general runtime component. That first non-engine frame usually names the broken mod or plugin.
Update or remove the named DLL
Check whether the plugin author has released a version for the new Valheim build. If an updated release exists, install it on the server and every client that uses it. If no compatible release exists, move that plugin’s DLL out of the BepInEx plugins folder and restart the server. Moving it is safer than deleting it because you can restore the file after a compatible update.

Logs can contain secondary warnings from plugins that loaded after the original failure. Start with the first non-engine frame tied to the crash, restart after changing one plugin, and read the new log. If the crash disappears, add other plugins back one at a time.
Mod authors often publish compatibility fixes within a day or two of a major update, but that timing is not guaranteed. Until a plugin is updated, the choices are to remove it, keep the server on a compatible branch where appropriate, or wait before upgrading.
Patch timing can create a temporary mismatch
Patch distribution is not always simultaneous across every platform or installation. Patch 1.0.17 was dated October 6, 2026, and its notes said that the update could take a few days to upload to all platforms. The preceding patch, 1.0.16, was dated September 25, 2026. During that window, a player or server can legitimately receive the update before the other side.
Do not force a downgrade or switch branches solely because one side has not received a patch yet. First compare the actual build IDs, then wait for the slower side to receive the same build or update the server through its normal SteamCMD channel.

Match the symptom to the likely cause

What not to do
- Do not reinstall the client first. A clean client cannot compensate for an outdated server or mismatched branch.
- Do not trust “up to date” without a build comparison. Steam can report that an installation is current relative to its selected branch while the other side uses another branch.
- Do not update a live server. Stop it, update, and restart so the process loads one consistent file set.
- Do not copy only the headline mod. Dependencies and configuration files can be part of the compatibility check.
- Do not delete worlds while investigating. Back them up, but treat the message as a compatibility problem unless logs show data corruption.
- Do not leave both old and new plugin DLLs installed. Remove or move the obsolete file before restarting.
If the error persists after every check
- Capture the client build ID, server build ID, branch selection, and the exact time of the failed attempt.
- Record the full server mod list, including versions and configuration profile.
- Test a direct IP connection with one player using an exactly synchronized minimal profile.
- Review the server console and BepInEx log from the same startup and connection attempt.
- Restore plugins one at a time if the minimal profile works; the first reintroduced plugin that reproduces the refusal is the leading suspect.
This evidence separates a Steam distribution delay from a branch mistake, a mod-enforced refusal, and a post-patch plugin crash. It also gives the server administrator enough information to reproduce the problem instead of repeatedly reinstalling unrelated files.
