For a self-hosted DayZ server, both principal log files are in the folder specified by the launch option -profiles=. The .RPT file is the engine report, while the timestamped .ADM file records player and administrative activity. An ADM file is created only when the server starts with -adminlog. Open the newest timestamped file for the current session. On a rented server, use the provider’s file manager, FTP access, or web-panel Logs page instead of looking on your own computer.

Which DayZ logs you are looking for
DayZ server logging is split by purpose. Knowing the file type prevents you from searching the wrong log or assuming a missing ADM means the server has no logs at all.

Recent builds name an ADM file after the executable and append the session date and time, for example DayZServer_x64_2026-08-07_18-01-33.ADM. A new session creates another timestamped file, so the newest matching file is normally the one receiving events now. RPT filenames can also be timestamped; select the current report by checking its modification time and the session in which it was created.
Find the active profiles folder on a self-hosted server
The reliable location is not a guessed default directory. It is the path supplied to the running server with -profiles=. If that parameter points to a custom directory, DayZ writes its profile-related logs there even when the game files are installed somewhere else.

- Locate the command that starts the server. Check the batch file, shell script, service definition, scheduled task, container configuration, or launcher entry used to start DayZ. You need the command for the instance that is currently running, not an old shortcut.
- Read the
-profiles=value exactly. Everything after the equals sign is the profiles directory. Preserve the full path, including drive letter, capitalization, spaces, and any surrounding quoting used by the launch script. - Open that directory. Use the operating system’s file manager or a terminal and navigate to the path from the startup command. Do not assume the folder is inside the game installation directory unless the command explicitly says so.
- Sort by modified time or name. Look for files ending in
.RPTand timestamped files ending in.ADM. Sorting by modification time makes the current session easier to identify. - Open the newest report and, if present, the newest ADM. These are plain text logs, so a text editor that can handle large files is preferable to a word processor. Keep the files unmodified if you intend to send them to an administrator or use them for later comparison.
If more than one DayZ instance is hosted on the machine, repeat the process for each instance’s startup command. Two servers can use different profiles directories, and opening the wrong one can make a healthy server appear to have no recent activity.
Check the launch parameters before troubleshooting
Most “missing log” problems are parameter or access problems. Verify the flags before changing files.
-profiles=: the location selector
This parameter determines where the profile data and the server logs are written for a self-hosted instance. If you can see the server executable but no logs beside it, inspect the command line for a separate profiles path. If the parameter is absent, the exact default RPT location is not established here, so do not rely on an assumed default; use the path documented by the current server setup or host instead.
-adminlog: required for ADM output
The ADM log is conditional. Starting DayZ without -adminlog means there may be no ADM file for that session, even though an RPT exists. Add the flag through the same startup mechanism that launches the server, restart the instance, and then check the profiles folder again. A restart is required because the option is evaluated when the server starts.
-doLogs and -dologs: RPT message logging
The Bohemia Interactive Community wiki documents -doLogs as writing messages to the server RPT file. Community launch examples often spell the flag -dologs. Treat capitalization as a build-specific detail: use the spelling shown in the documentation or launch examples for the DayZ build you run, and verify the result in the newly created RPT after restarting.

Open and identify the current session’s files
Once you have the correct folder, use a consistent naming and timestamp check.
- Filter the directory for
.RPTand.ADMextensions. - For ADM files, choose the most recent
DayZServer_x64_<date-time>.ADM(or the equivalent executable-based name used by your build). - For RPT files, choose the report whose modification time falls within the current server session.
- Open the files read-only first. Search within them for the time, player name, event text, or error you are investigating.
- If the server is busy, close and reopen the file or refresh the editor view before deciding that a new event was not logged; the live file can grow while the process is running.
The timestamp identifies a session, not a permanent archive. Before restarting or rotating a server, copy any log you need to retain to a separate folder and keep the original filename so its session time remains clear.
What the ADM file can tell you
ADM is the activity-oriented log. It is the file to inspect for player and administrative events rather than engine diagnostics. Depending on the server configuration, it can include player hits, kills, placement events, building actions, and periodic player-list information.
Control ADM detail in serverDZ.cfg
The following settings can filter or enable categories of ADM output:
adminLogPlayerHitsOnlycontrols whether the log is limited to player-hit events.adminLogPlacementcontrols placement logging.adminLogBuildActionscontrols building-action logging.adminLogPlayerListcontrols periodic player-list entries, including player positions.
These settings affect what gets written; they do not move the file. Change them in the serverDZ.cfg used by the active instance, then restart the server if that configuration requires a restart. If an event category is absent, check both the corresponding setting and the presence of -adminlog before concluding that the server failed to record it.

Use ADM for activity investigations
Start with the event’s approximate time, then correlate the player name or action with nearby entries. For a suspected kill or hit, ADM is the appropriate first file. For a construction dispute, inspect placement and build-action entries when those options are enabled. If player positions are involved, remember that adminLogPlayerList produces periodic entries rather than a continuous movement trace.
What the RPT file can tell you
RPT is the engine report. It contains engine errors and messages and is the first place to look when the server fails to start, reports a script or asset problem, or behaves differently after a restart.
Read RPT entries in context
- Record the timestamp and the first occurrence of an error instead of copying only the final repeated line.
- Check whether the message appears during startup, during a player connection, or after a configuration change.
- Compare the current RPT with an earlier session if the problem began after a restart. Session timestamps make that comparison possible.
- Use ADM only for activity correlation; do not expect it to explain engine initialization failures.
If no RPT is being produced or it contains none of the expected messages, verify the active -profiles= path and the logging flag spelling before editing unrelated configuration files.
Finding logs on a rented DayZ server
A rented server usually runs on the provider’s machine, so its logs are not in your local DayZ installation. The provider exposes them through a file manager, FTP, or a web control panel.

Some hosts expose a profile directory through their file manager or FTP account. BisectHosting documentation, for example, refers to a serverprofile folder. The exact folder name and account permissions depend on the service, but the workflow is the same:

- Stop or pause changes to the server only if the host requires it; otherwise open the panel while the server is running.
- Open the provider’s file manager or connect with the FTP credentials supplied for that server.
- Navigate to the profile directory, such as
serverprofilewhen that is the folder provided by the host. - Locate the newest
.RPTand, if admin logging is enabled, the newest timestamped.ADM. - Use the panel’s download action or FTP transfer to save a copy locally before analyzing it.
Web-panel Logs page
Some providers present logs directly in a Logs section rather than exposing the underlying directory. Nitrado, for example, provides a web-panel Logs area. Select the DayZ server, open its Logs page, and choose the current report or admin log offered by the panel. If an ADM option is missing, check the panel’s startup or logging settings: the host may have admin logging disabled even though the server is otherwise running normally.

An absent ADM is usually expected when the server was started without -adminlog. Work through these checks in order:

- Confirm that the current startup parameters include
-adminlog. - Restart the server after adding or correcting the flag, then look for a newly timestamped ADM file.
- On a rented server, inspect the control panel for an admin-log switch or logging option; panel settings can override what you see in a local-looking configuration screen.
- Check the file filters in
serverDZ.cfgif the file exists but lacks a particular event category.
Do not treat an empty search result in an old session as proof that logging is broken. The option applies when the server starts, and each session receives its own timestamped file.
When the RPT is missing or appears stale
First verify the profiles path from the live launch command. A stale report often belongs to a previous session or a different instance. Then verify the spelling and capitalization of -doLogs/-dologs accepted by your build. After restarting, note the new report’s timestamp and check whether startup messages are appended there.
If a rented host hides the filesystem, use its Logs page or ask the provider which profile directory backs the current instance. Do not infer a local default path when the provider controls the launch command.

Practical troubleshooting scenarios
“I see an RPT but no ADM.”
This normally means -adminlog was not active for that session. Verify the flag, restart, and check for a new timestamped ADM. On a rented service, inspect the panel’s admin-log setting.

Check adminLogBuildActions and adminLogPlacement in the active serverDZ.cfg. These options determine which categories are written. Also confirm that you are reading the newest ADM rather than an older session created before the setting changed.
“I cannot find either file beside the executable.”
Use the startup command to find -profiles=. The profiles folder may be deliberately separate from the executable directory.
“The player list does not show a continuous trail.”
adminLogPlayerList writes periodic player-list entries. It is not described as a continuous movement recorder, so gaps between entries are expected.
“The host panel shows no admin log.”
Admin logging may be switched off in the panel. Enable it there if the service provides that control, restart if requested, and then inspect the newly created session log.

Handling and sharing log files safely
ADM output can contain player names, event details, and—when player-list logging is enabled—positions. Treat downloaded logs as operational records rather than public chat transcripts. Share only the lines needed to diagnose an issue, remove information that other players do not need to see, and retain the original file privately when exact timestamps may matter.
Keep a simple archive organized by server and session timestamp. The filename pattern already supplies a useful session identifier for ADM files; retain that name when copying. For RPT files, record the server start time alongside the copied filename if the build uses less descriptive naming.
