The name in tls.certresolver must exactly match a resolver key declared in Traefik’s static configuration, and that resolver must finish initializing before the router can use it.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Coolify, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
Correct the name first, then verify the resolver’s static configuration, ACME storage path, permissions, challenge prerequisites, and Traefik version syntax. A declaration by itself is not enough: routers must explicitly select the resolver.

What the error actually means
A Traefik certificate resolver is the ACME configuration that obtains and renews certificates. A router does not automatically use every resolver you define. Traefik’s documentation makes this distinction explicit: “Defining a certificate resolver does not imply that routers are going to use it automatically.” The router must name the resolver with its tls.certresolver setting.
The error therefore has two common interpretations:

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- The router references a key that is spelled differently from the key in
certificatesResolvers. - The key is spelled correctly, but Traefik could not initialize that resolver because its static configuration, storage, permissions, or challenge settings failed.
In both cases, the router behaves as though the resolver is unavailable. Fixing only the label can leave the error in place if the resolver itself failed during startup.
1. Compare the resolver names character for character
Suppose the static configuration contains this key:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
certificatesResolvers:
le:
acme:
...
The router must use le, not letsencrypt, cloudflare, or another descriptive name. Resolver names are case-sensitive, so LE, Le, and le are different names.
| Static resolver key | Router value that matches | Values that do not match |
|---|---|---|
le |
tls.certresolver=le |
letsencrypt, LE, cloudflare |
publicAcme |
tls.certresolver=publicAcme |
publicacme, acme |
Check every spelling location: the key under certificatesResolvers, the router label or router object, and any generated configuration that substitutes environment variables. Remove accidental whitespace and check capitalization. If you rename the key, update every router that references it.
2. Put the resolver in static configuration
Resolvers belong to Traefik’s static configuration. That configuration can be supplied as YAML, TOML, or command-line flags. Router labels and dynamic router objects belong to the provider configuration. A resolver placed only in a file provider’s dynamic configuration is not a static certificate resolver, so a router cannot use it as an ACME resolver.
Separate the two responsibilities:
- Static configuration: defines
certificatesResolvers, the ACME account, storage, and challenge. - Dynamic provider configuration: defines routers, services, middleware, and labels that refer to the resolver.
When troubleshooting, identify which file or command-line argument Traefik reads at startup. A perfectly written resolver block has no effect if it is in a file that is not mounted, not selected, or loaded as dynamic configuration instead of static configuration.

3. Use a complete ACME resolver block
A minimal YAML shape is:
certificatesResolvers:
le:
acme:
email: [email protected]
storage: /data/acme.json
httpChallenge:
entryPoint: web
The corresponding Docker router labels need the same resolver key:
- traefik.http.routers.app.tls=true
- traefik.http.routers.app.tls.certresolver=le
The tls.certresolver value is only a reference. It does not create le, repair a malformed ACME block, or make a challenge reachable. Keep the resolver block in static configuration and the labels in the provider configuration.
Use the challenge type that matches the deployment:
| Challenge | Required capability | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP challenge | The deployment can expose the HTTP challenge entry point, normally through port 80. | Sites that can route public HTTP traffic to Traefik. |
| TLS challenge | The deployment can accept TLS-ALPN challenge traffic on port 443. | Deployments that can expose the required TLS endpoint. |
| DNS challenge | Traefik can update authoritative DNS through a supported provider. | Environments where ports 80 or 443 cannot be exposed for validation. |
A resolver can be correctly named and still fail to initialize or obtain a certificate when the selected challenge’s network or DNS prerequisite is unavailable. Choose the method based on what the deployment can actually expose or update; there is no universally correct method for every domain.
4. Verify the ACME storage path inside the container
The path in storage is evaluated from Traefik’s point of view. If the configuration says /data/acme.json, the /data directory must exist inside the Traefik container before startup. The host directory existing on your machine is not sufficient unless it is mounted at the same container path.
Use an absolute container path and make the data persistent with a bind mount or named volume. Persistence prevents a container replacement from discarding the ACME account and certificate data.

- Choose the container path, such as
/data/acme.json. - Create or allocate the parent directory in the container’s mounted volume before Traefik starts.
- Mount that volume at
/data, matching the path in the static configuration. - Confirm that the running Traefik container can see the mounted directory at that exact path.
- Leave the file itself for Traefik to create; the parent directory must exist first.
A missing parent directory can prevent resolver initialization. This often produces a resolver-not-found symptom even though the resolver key is spelled correctly.
5. Check permissions and the existing ACME file
Traefik must be able to read and write the storage file. Check both the directory and the file inside the container, not just their permissions on the host. A read-only mount, an ownership mismatch, or a restrictive mode can stop ACME initialization.
An existing acme.json can also be the problem. Invalid ACME data may make initialization fail, and an inaccessible file has the same practical result. Before changing it:
- Back up a known-good file without overwriting the backup.
- Check that the mounted path points to the file you intended, rather than to an empty or unrelated file.
- Confirm that Traefik’s process can read and write it.
- If the file is malformed, recreate it only when you accept losing the certificates and ACME account data stored there.
Deleting the file is not a harmless reset. It can require new certificate issuance and may trigger ACME account or rate-limit consequences. Preserve a valid backup whenever possible.
6. Inspect what Traefik actually loaded
Configuration on disk is not necessarily configuration in the running process. Check the path supplied to Traefik, command-line flags, environment substitutions, and volume mounts together.
- Locate the static configuration file or flags used by the running container or service.
- Verify that the file containing
certificatesResolversis mounted at that location. - Check that environment variables resolve to the intended email, storage path, entry point, and challenge settings.
- Confirm that the router labels or dynamic objects are attached to the provider Traefik is watching.
- Restart Traefik after static changes, because static settings are read during startup.
Enable log.level=DEBUG while diagnosing the problem and inspect startup logs before sending a test request. Look for the first resolver or ACME initialization failure, not only the later router warning. The earliest error usually identifies whether the issue is a missing path, inaccessible storage, invalid data, or challenge configuration.

7. Account for Traefik version syntax
ACME challenge options have changed across Traefik versions. Traefik’s migration notes record a reorganization of DNS-challenge options in version 3.3. A configuration written for a 2.x release can therefore contain option names that are deprecated or interpreted differently on 3.3 and newer.
Check the version of the running Traefik image or binary, then compare the DNS-challenge portion of the configuration with the migration guidance for that version. Do not assume that a resolver block copied from an older deployment remains valid unchanged. Update deprecated option names before diagnosing the router label itself.
This version check matters especially when the error appears immediately after an upgrade: the resolver key may still match, while a changed challenge option prevents successful initialization.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why tls.certresolver can appear to be ignored
The label is an instruction to a router, not a declaration of a resolver. Traefik will ignore the intended certificate workflow when any of these conditions is true:
- The value does not exactly match a key under
certificatesResolvers. - The resolver exists only in dynamic configuration.
- The static file or flags containing the resolver were not loaded by the running process.
- The ACME storage directory does not exist inside the container.
- The storage file cannot be read or written, or contains invalid ACME data.
- A version-specific challenge option prevents initialization.
The working relationship is explicit: static configuration creates and initializes the resolver; the router’s tls.certresolver selects that initialized resolver.
A practical diagnostic path
Use this order so that a simple naming mistake is resolved before destructive storage changes:
Best Value
- Read the router reference. Copy the exact
tls.certresolvervalue from the label or router object. - Find the static key. Search the loaded static configuration for the same spelling beneath
certificatesResolvers. Correct capitalization and punctuation. - Confirm configuration type. Make sure the resolver is static, while the router remains in provider configuration.
- Validate the ACME block. Check the email, absolute storage path, and selected challenge section.
- Validate the container path. Ensure the parent directory exists at the path Traefik sees and that the volume is mounted there.
- Validate access to storage. Check read/write permissions and whether an existing file is valid ACME data.
- Check the running inputs. Verify mounts, flags, environment substitutions, and the Traefik version actually in use.
- Read debug startup logs. Restart after static changes and identify the first resolver initialization error.
- Test the router. Only after the resolver initializes should you investigate whether the selected challenge can reach the domain or update its DNS.
This order distinguishes “Traefik does not know this name” from “Traefik knows the name but cannot complete ACME.” The first requires configuration correction; the second requires storage, permissions, version, or challenge troubleshooting.
Recovery scenarios
The name is wrong, but the resolver is healthy
Change the router value to the exact static key and redeploy the dynamic configuration. Do not create a second resolver merely to accommodate a typo unless you intentionally need a separate ACME account or challenge configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe resolver block is correct, but the directory is missing
Create the parent directory in the mounted volume, keep the same absolute path in the static configuration, and restart Traefik. Traefik can create the storage file after the directory is available.
The file is inaccessible
Correct the mount and permissions so the Traefik process can read and write the file. If the host path is mounted read-only or at a different container path, fix the mount rather than changing the router label.
The file is malformed
Preserve a backup first. Recreate the storage file only if losing its certificates and account data is acceptable, then allow Traefik to initialize a new ACME store.
The problem began after a version upgrade
Compare the running version with the configuration’s syntax, paying particular attention to DNS-challenge option changes introduced in the 3.3 migration. Correct deprecated options, restart, and review debug startup logs again.

- The router’s
tls.certresolvervalue exactly matches the static resolver key, including case. - The resolver is declared under
certificatesResolversin static configuration. - The ACME block includes an email, absolute storage path, and a challenge configuration appropriate for the deployment.
- The storage parent directory exists inside the Traefik container.
- The mounted storage is persistent and writable, and any existing ACME file is valid.
- The running process is using the intended files, flags, mounts, and environment values.
- The configuration syntax matches the installed Traefik version.
- Debug startup logs show resolver initialization before you test a request.
Once these checks pass, a remaining certificate failure is likely in the selected HTTP, TLS, or DNS challenge’s reachability or provider setup rather than in the resolver name itself.
