The Outlast Trials is always online, including solo sessions. When multiplayer, matchmaking, or connection fails, work from the outside in: check for a service or platform outage, retry a temporary server error, update the game and system, verify your clock and security software, then test the router, NAT, and latency. Finally, isolate the affected player and send Red Barrels a precise fault report if the problem persists.
Test the game after every change. That makes it possible to identify the change that actually restored access instead of combining several guesses.

Start by identifying the failure pattern
The same symptom can have very different causes. A service outage affects many players at once; a strict NAT or blocked firewall rule may affect only one household. Use the pattern before changing settings.

1. Check service and platform status before changing your network
Look at the official status information for the game and the platform you use. Ubisoft’s connectivity portal provides server-status and connectivity categories, while SEGA’s network guidance also begins with client and server status checks. These are general platform checks, so the exact page and availability can differ by PC launcher, PlayStation, or Xbox.

- If a broad outage is reported, wait for service restoration rather than changing router ports or reinstalling the game.
- Compare the timing with reports from your friends. A simultaneous failure across different homes is strong evidence of a service-side problem.
- If status pages show normal operation, continue with the local checks below. A status page can lag behind a newly developing incident, so a single failed attempt does not prove your network is at fault.
2. Retry a temporary matchmaking failure correctly
For the exact message “Failed to find server for match,” Red Barrels’ official announcement says to wait a few moments and try again. Do not repeatedly cancel and restart instantly; give the matchmaking service time to clear the failed request.
- Exit the failed matchmaking result and return to the lobby or Sleep Room.
- Wait several moments without launching another queue.
- Start matchmaking again.
- If the second attempt fails, make one more retry after checking service status. Then move to updates, clock, security, and network checks instead of looping indefinitely.
A one-off failure that disappears on the next attempt is consistent with a transient service response. Repeated failures at every session need the broader diagnosis that follows.
3. Install every game, launcher, and system update
Outdated software can prevent a client from completing an online session. SEGA’s official network guidance recommends installing required client and game updates and keeping system drivers current.
PC checklist
- Open the launcher that starts The Outlast Trials and let it finish any pending game update.
- Restart the launcher after updating so it refreshes its session and installed-file state.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Update graphics and network drivers from the hardware manufacturer or your PC maker. Restart Windows after driver installation.
PlayStation and Xbox checklist
- Open the console’s system-update screen and install any pending system software.
- Check the game’s update status from its library or installed-games menu.
- Restart the console after updates complete, then launch the game again.
If the problem began immediately after an update, record the update time in your notes. That timing helps support distinguish a client regression from a network problem.

4. Set the system clock to automatic time
An incorrect date, time, or time zone can interfere with online authentication. SEGA specifically recommends automatic time synchronization.
- Open your PC or console date-and-time settings.
- Enable automatic date and time and automatic time-zone selection where available.
- Run the platform’s synchronization option, or restart the device so it obtains a fresh time.
- Launch the game and test online access before changing another setting.
Do not manually set a clock by guesswork. The objective is a synchronized system time, not merely a time that looks close.
5. Check firewall and antivirus permissions
Red Barrels’ announcement advises checking firewall or antivirus configuration when the game cannot connect to its servers. Security software can block a newly updated executable even if an older version was previously allowed.

- Open Windows Security.
- Choose Firewall & network protection, then Allow an app through firewall.
- Confirm that the legitimate game executable and its launcher are allowed on the network profiles you actually use.
- Open your antivirus quarantine or blocked-app history and check for a game or launcher entry.
- Restore or allow only the genuine installation files, then test the game.
Do not disable the firewall or antivirus permanently, and do not create broad rules for unknown files. If you are unsure which executable is genuine, use the launcher’s installed-file information or the platform’s repair function rather than downloading a replacement from an unofficial site.

Consoles
Console security is largely managed by the platform. Check for a platform-network incident, install system updates, and run the console’s built-in connection test. If the test reports a failed account or service connection, resolve that platform issue before changing router settings.
6. Test the local network path
Official connectivity guidance identifies ISP conditions, shared connection speed, and modem/router state as relevant factors. A connection can be fast enough for browsing yet unstable during a live co-op session.
Restart and observe the modem or router
- Stop downloads, cloud backups, video streams, and other high-bandwidth activity on the household network.
- Power off the modem and router using their normal controls. If they are separate devices, restart both and allow them to finish reconnecting.
- Wait until the internet indicators are stable, then reconnect the gaming device.
- Try The Outlast Trials again and note whether the problem returns under normal household traffic.
If restarting works only briefly, the restart has not fixed the underlying cause; it has merely reset the connection. Compare a quiet period with a busy period to reveal congestion.

Compare another connection
If practical, test the same device on a different connection, such as a phone hotspot or another trusted network. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a recommendation to use mobile data for regular play. If the game works elsewhere, your home router, ISP path, or local security configuration deserves attention. If it fails on both connections, focus on the game, platform, account, or service status.

Prefer a stable path for diagnosis
Use a wired connection temporarily if your device and router support one. The purpose is to remove Wi-Fi signal variation from the test. If wired access changes the result, investigate wireless interference, distance, or access-point placement rather than assuming the game itself is broken.
7. Check NAT type and latency
Nintendo’s matchmaking guidance identifies a non-optimal NAT type and high latency as causes of matchmaking timeouts. Use your platform’s built-in network-test screen and record the exact NAT result and latency indication.
Interpreting the result
- Open or otherwise optimal NAT: NAT is less likely to be the immediate blocker, so continue with latency, packet loss, firewall, and service checks.
- Strict, unavailable, or failed NAT: The router or ISP may be limiting peer and service communication. Consult the router or ISP documentation for the supported remedy.
- High latency or an unstable test: Reduce competing traffic, restart the network equipment, and compare another connection.
A NAT label is not a universal diagnosis; naming differs between platforms. Do not guess at port-forwarding values from an unrelated game or copy rules from an untrusted guide. Record the platform’s wording and ask your router or ISP provider which supported settings apply.
8. Isolate the party and rebuild the lobby
When friends cannot join, determine whether the failure follows the group or one player.
- Have each person test solo online access.
- Ask the player who fails solo to record the platform, region, exact error, NAT result, and latency indication.
- If everyone succeeds alone, have one player create a fresh lobby in the Sleep Room.
- Invite members one at a time, testing after each addition.
- If one invitation consistently triggers the failure, remove that member and investigate that player’s platform, account, or network path rather than changing every participant’s router.
This process narrows the scope. It does not prove that a particular player caused the failure; it identifies where further testing is most efficient.
Platform-focused checklists
PC
- Confirm the launcher and game are fully updated.
- Install current operating-system, graphics, and network-driver updates.
- Set automatic date and time.
- Verify firewall and antivirus permissions for the legitimate launcher and game files.
- Run the platform’s network test, then compare a second connection if the issue continues.
PlayStation
- Check the PlayStation service-status page before troubleshooting the home network.
- Install pending console and game updates.
- Run the console internet-connection test and record NAT and latency information if shown.
- Restart the modem/router and console, then test with other household traffic paused.
Xbox
- Check Xbox network status and install pending system or game updates.
- Run the console’s multiplayer or network test and note NAT and latency results.
- Restart the network equipment, then test again with downloads and streams stopped.
- If only one Xbox player cannot join, compare that player’s solo result with the rest of the party.
Menu names can change with platform software updates. Use the current network, update, and privacy/settings screens presented by your device rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Use timing and repeatability to avoid the wrong fix

What to record before contacting support
Persistent errors are easier to diagnose when the report describes a reproducible pattern instead of only saying that matchmaking is broken. Prepare:
- Platform and launcher or console model.
- Game and system version, if displayed.
- Country or region and the approximate time of each failure.
- Exact error text, including capitalization.
- Whether solo online play works.
- Whether every party member fails or only one person.
- NAT result and latency indication from the platform network test.
- Whether another connection, a router restart, a wired test, or paused household traffic changed the result.
- The date and time when the issue began, especially if it followed an update.
Red Barrels’ support archive directs players experiencing in-game issues to the 18+ Official Outlast Discord and its ticketing system. Steam identifies Red Barrels as the official support provider for the game. Use the official support route for your platform, and include the evidence above so support can distinguish a service incident from a local connection problem.
When to stop troubleshooting locally
Stop making network changes when the evidence points to a service-wide outage, when the game works on another connection but your ISP or router remains unstable, or when repeated tests show a platform-account failure. More router changes will not repair a server incident, and random port rules can create new problems. At that point, send the documented pattern to the relevant platform or Red Barrels support channel.
